2 INTRODUCTION TO SERIES The purpose of this video series is to acquaint young children with the importance of memorials in America. It is designed to teach how memorials are symbols that help us remember great Americans who devoted or sacrificed their lives to win and ensure the freedoms we all enjoy today. All over America, there are many memorials dedicated to special individuals whose lives proved to be so important to the future of our country. As children learn about some of these memorials that help us to remember those who are no longer with us, they will hopefully be inspired to learn from their examples. As a complementary device with each video, an instructional guide suggests exercises to help aid teachers, parents and students. Arizona s of America America s memorials remind Americans about our nation s greatest heroes and heroines and the causes and deeds that helped to make them great. s exist for every president, including certain ones who, because of their special contributions to America, have memorials built to honor them in the nation s capital. Two of these are Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. Also, in Washington, D.C., are memorials remembering those who served in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Across the Potomac River, lies Arlington National Cemetery where you will find John F. Kennedy s gravesite memorial and the Tomb of the Unknowns, along with memorials to many other great Americans. Much further away in Hawaii, is the U.S.S. Arizona honoring those who died on the battleship in Pearl Harbor. s are also dedicated to great Americans who fought for our freedoms, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., whose most famous memorial is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Arlington National Cemetery: The final resting place of many veterans and great Americans, including John, Robert, and Jacqueline Kennedy, and the Tomb of the Unknowns. John F. Kennedy: U. S. president assassinated in Korean War: War fought in the 1950s between North Korea and South Korea, involving the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Civil rights leader assassinated in : A symbol built to remember and honor great people and/or events. Symbol: An object or picture that represents a much larger idea. Thomas Jefferson: The 3rd U. S. president and writer of the Declaration of Independence. U. S. Civil War: War fought on American soil in the 1860s that pitted the Northern states against the Southern states. Vietnam War : This memorial symbolized the conflict from between North and South Vietnam involving the United States. World War II : This memorial symbolizes the largest and most far-reaching war that the United States ever fought. The war took place in the 1930s and 1940s and was fought in Europe and the Pacific Ocean. 5 Follow-Up Activities: 1) You might print out the list of U. S. memorials on as a reference source and have students pick one memorial to research and write a short report including whom or what the memorial commemorates, where it is located, a detailed description with interesting features, and why the student feels the person or event was memorialized. 2) Think about having students select someone living or dead that they feel deserves a memorial. Have them explain why they feel this person should have a memorial. They should include a drawing of their design of the memorial and state where they would locate it and why. 3) You might find out if there are any memorials in your area that students could visit. Provide them with information regarding the purpose of the memorial(s). Plan a trip to visit the memorial(s). An old cemetery can serve the purpose, if there are no historical memorials. Explain to students how families memorialize their loved ones. 4) You could possibly have students pick a memorial from the video that they were particularly interested in to read about further. Have them write a short explanation of why the memorial interested them and if it inspired them in any way. Have the students read their explanations to the class. 6 Exercise #1: Have the students study the vocabulary list on page 2.
