Students will examine the procedures and systems to accumulate, analyze, measure, and record financial transactions. Students will use recorded financial information to prepare a balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows, and statement of shareholders equity to communicate the business entity s results of operations and financial position to users of financial information who are external to the company. Students will study the nature of assets, liabilities, and owners equity while learning to use reported financial information for purposes of making decisions about the company. Students will be exposed to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Prerequisite(s): TSI complete college-readiness standard for Mathematics; or equivalent Recommended co requisite: MATH 1324 Mathematics for Business & Social Science Required Textbook(s), Supplies, and Materials: 1. Title: Financial and Managerial Accounting, 13 th Edition (VC Custom Bundle*) Authors: Warren, Reeve, Duchac ISBN: Publisher: South-Western Cengage Learning *Bundle includes 3-hole punch binder-ready textbook and 12 month Access Code to CengageNow2. Note: It is mandatory that each student have both the text and access code by the first day of class. The text alone is not sufficient. 2. Basic hand-held calculator. (Use of programmable calculators and/or cell phone calculators will not be permitted for exams.)
2 P a g e 2 3. Two (2) three ring binders with tabs. More information will be provided the first day of class. 4. Outside of class assignments will frequently require use of the internet. Students may use campus computer labs or their own computer. If using a home computer, highspeed internet connection is required. Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) is recommended. Learning Outcomes: 1. Use basic accounting terminology and the assumptions, principles, and constraints of the accounting environment 2. Identify the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting. 3. Analyze and record business events in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). 4. Prepare adjusting entries and close the general ledger. 5. Prepare financial statements in an appropriate U.S. GAAP format, including the following: income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and statement of shareholders equity. 6. Analyze and interpret financial statements using financial analysis techniques. 7. Describe the conceptual differences between International Financial Reporting Standards and U.S. generally accepted accounting principles. Assessments: The following assessments are used in the course to evaluate the learning outcomes listed above: 1. Assignments 2. Unit Exams 3. Comprehensive Final Exam 4. Comprehensive Accounting Cycle Project SCANS: Reading: Locate, understand, and interpret written information in prose and in documents such as manuals, graphs, and schedules. Writing: Communicate thoughts, ideas, information, and messages in writing, and create documents such as letters, directions, manuals, reports, graphs, and flow charts. Arithmetic or Mathematics: Perform basic computations and approach practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques. Speaking and Listening: Organize ideas and communicate orally; receive, attend to, interpret, and respond to verbal messages and other cues. Thinking Skills: A worker must think creatively, make decisions, solve problems, visualize, know how to learn, and reason effectively. Personal Qualities: A worker must display responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, selfmanagement, integrity, and honesty. Workplace Competencies: resources; interpersonal skills; information; systems; and technology.
3 P a g e 3 Basic use of computers Course Requirements: All instructors in all sections will use the same textbook and same accounting cycle project developed by the BMGT Curriculum Coordinator and assessed using the departmental grading rubric. All Victoria College requirements and practices will apply. Criteria for Grading: The semester grade will be determined as follows: Course Level Criteria: 3 Major Exams 40% Assignments and Quizzes 30% Project 10% Comprehensive Final Exam 20% 100% For all sections there is an Internet component that must be used for much of the problem - solving. This involves the text publisher s interactive web site (CengageNOW) that is password protected. Each student must have an access code that comes with the required text bundle above, or may be purchased separately. A home computer with high speed internet connection is encouraged for face-to-face sections, and required for online accounting sections. Assignments: There is a due date for all assignments. Assignments include electronically submitted problem solving and quizzes through CengageNo2, manually prepared assignments, other special assignments, and projects as assigned by instructor. Assignments submitted electronically through CengageNow2 will be assessed a 20% penalty if submitted late, but before the last date to submit date. Some Assignments and projects as specified by instructor will not be accepted late and will be assigned a grade of zero if not submitted by due date. 3 Unit Exams: Students must take unit exams at the scheduled date and time. NO makeup exams will be given. If a student misses an exam, for any reason, the student will receive a grade of zero (0) for the exam. At the end of the semester, the student s final exam grade will be used for both the final exam and for up to one (1) missed unit exam grade. If all exams are taken, and it is to the student s advantage, the final exam grade will be substituted for the lowest unit exam grade. Institutional Level Criteria: Each course syllabus will contain the grading formula that the instructor intends to follow in arriving at semester grades. Instructors are responsible for assigning grades in accordance with the definition given in the current Victoria College catalog. Proper security measures should be taken in the preparation, storing and administration of examinations. The weight of the final examination is assigned by the instructor or by the Department, with approval of the Division Dean. In general, the final examination should not constitute more than one-third nor less than one-fifth of the semester grade. Absences from the final examination are reported to the instructor directly. Students who are absent from final examinations for reasons beyond their control may apply in writing to the instructor for a postponed examination. If the postponed examination is approved by the instructor, it will be taken on a schedule made by the instructor.
4 P a g e 4 All Final Examinations for online classes must be proctored. Examinations may be offered during the week of final exams online in a proctored environment or within the same format as traditional class finals which are not to exceed three hours. Students should not be required to take exams during times that conflict with the final exam schedule prepared by the Admissions and Records Office. Online final examinations, at the discretion of the instructor and with approval from the appropriate Division Dean, may be given after all other course requirements have been completed, but no later than the end of the week of finals. If a student is unable to take an exam as scheduled, the student must petition the instructor in writing prior to scheduled time of the final in order to reschedule the exam. Absence from a final examination without valid reason will result in a grade of zero for the final examination. Final examinations may not be given early without prior approval of the Division Dean. Attendance: Course Level Criteria: Attendance will be taken each class period at the beginning of class for face-to-face classes. Leaving class early is the same as an absence unless approved by the instructor before the beginning of class. If a different method of taking attendance is established during the semester, students will be informed in writing of any change in requirement. Institutional Level Criteria: Attendance will be taken for every class meeting. The method by which attendance is taken will be determined by the faculty member and clearly outlined in the class syllabus. Attendance records will be submitted electronically to the appropriate division dean on the last day of the course. Regular and prompt class attendance is expected of every student. A student s absence means that the student is not able to participate in the class. INSTRUCTOR-INITIATED WITHDRAWAL(Drops) While it is the final responsibility of the student to drop a class that she/he is no longer attending, instructors MUST drop a student who has not logged into an online class or physically attended a face-to-face or hybrid class prior to the ORD. Instructors must initiate ORD drops by the published deadlines; CANNOT drop a student with an average of D/UD or better; after following established division retention practices, MAY at their discretion drop a student who is not passing without consultation with the student when absences exceed 20% of the scheduled class meetings. For classes that include a separate laboratory, a student may be dropped when absences exceed 20% of the laboratory meetings or 20% of the lecture meetings; MUST drop a student who is not passing when absences exceed 40% of the scheduled class meetings unless said excessive absences accrue after the 65% drop date; CANNOT drop a student after 65% of class instruction has been completed. Selective admission programs define their attendance and instructor-initiated withdrawal procedures in their syllabi and program handbooks.
