3 TWO PRINITING PROCESSES GENERALLY USED TODAY FOR PRINTING LABELS ARE : Both processes use roll label stock FLEXOGRAPHIC AND DIGITAL PRINTING

4 Flexographic Printing A method of printing that uses flexible printing plates Each plate with its slightly raised image is rotated on a cylinder and coated with fast drying ink The material is passed between the print plate and impression roller which applies pressure to keep the substrate against the plate FLEXO PRINTING VS DIGITAL PRINTING

5 BENEFITS OF FLEXOGRAPHIC PRINTING Can print on virtually any material Enhanced durability: best solution for labels that need to have longer shelf life or those that will be used outdoors Speed of production: laminating die-cutting can be integrated to the press line, making production continuous Color precision: uses the Pantone Color System to determine an exact color for your graphics Low cost for large run print jobs FLEXO PRINTING VS DIGITAL PRINTING

6 DRAWBACKS OF FLEXO GRAPHIC PRINTING Cost of plates Time spent setting up plates and print stations prior to press run Make ready during press run for new sku Registration: movement that occurs as labels move from one plate to the next making it difficult to layer colors precisely; printing techniques called traps and bleeds are use to overcome this setback, however perfect registration is always a concern FLEXO PRINTING VS DIGITAL PRINTING

7 Digital Printing Digital printing deposits toner onto the substrate Toner does not penetrate the substrate, but instead forms a thin layer on the surface using a heat process FLEXO PRINTING VS DIGITAL PRINTING

8 BENEFITS OF DIGITAL PRINTING Requires no plates to be created or images to be distorted and the setup time for the machine is minimal Can easily turn around custom print jobs quickly and easily with no significant labor demands Digital images are printed in one image rather then using several different printing plates eliminating registration or color overlap concerns With the cost of plates removed digital printing is an economical solution for short run multiple sku jobs Flexibility labels can be changed or updated easily FLEXO PRINTING VS DIGITAL PRINTING

9 DRAWBACKS OF DIGITAL PRINTING High cost of large run print jobs: digitally printed labels are more expensive individually, making them much less affordable for large print jobs Less durable: while a laminate can be added to increase durability these labels are not designed to last as long as flexographic printed labels Additional process means additional steps and additional money: die cutting and adding lamination are done separately from the original digital printing process Limited materials: cannot print on material that are heat sensitive, since digital presses use a heat sensitive process FLEXO PRINTING VS DIGITAL PRINTING

10 Topcoats (Protective Coatings) In some cases, it s necessary to protect labels from different environmental conditions. Varnish: A coating applied to a surface to give it a protective gloss. Laminate: A protective film that is fused to the labels. Lamination can provide a gloss or matte finish that facilitates resistance to handling abrasions and chemicals. LABEL CHARACTERISTICS

12 Finishing Formats There are generally 3 types of finishing formats: Roll Form, Sheeted, or Fan-Folded. Roll Form: Labels are rewound onto a core 3 inch and 1 inch cores most common size FINISHING FORMATS & OPTIONS

13 Sheeted: These are individual single sheet labels usually containing a back or top score. This includes inserts. FINISHING FORMATS

14 Fan- Folded: Die Cut labels with a perforation across the liner are folded back and forth along the perforations creating a stack of labels. FINISHING FORMATS

15 Finishing Format Styles There are generally 2 types of finishing styles, Die Cut or Butt Cut. Die Cut Labels: Labels which have a gap or space (normally 1/16 or 1/8 ). There are many die shapes available including square corner, round corner, circle, rectangle, and other special shapes. FINISHING FORMATS & OPTIONS

17 Butt Cut labels: Labels separated by a single cross-direction cut to the liner. No matrix area exists between labels. Butt cut labels are not suitable for automatic dispensing. FINISHING FORMATS & OPTIONS

18 Rewind Position After completion of printing and die-cutting, the converted label roll is taken from the press to the rewind department to be finished. FINISHING FORMATS & OPTIONS

19 Label Performance What does the label adhere to? (Plastic, metal, glass, corrugated, aluminum.) What are the surface conditions? (Smooth, or textured, flat or curved, clean or oily.) What environment will the label be exposed to? At what temperature will the label be applied? Does the label need to be permanent or removable? Is there any imprinting? (If imprinting, what method is being used?) BASIC FUNDAMENTALS OF LABELING

20 Label Characteristics Do you have a sample? (If yes, do you want us to match your sample?) Do you have artwork? (If yes, please provide.) What is the size of the label? (Do you want exact size or is there a +/-? Die library) How many colors? (Spot color or CMYK?) Material type? (Paper, Film, Polyester, Polypropylene, etc.) Does the label need Lamination for protection? (Gloss, matte, etc.) How is it being applied? (Machine or Hand-applied?) Is there consecutive numbering? Are there any bar codes? Any copy changes? (If yes, how many?) BASIC FUNDAMENTALS OF LABELING

21 Paper: A natural product made from wood or pulp. Film: A synthetic or plastic type of material. Foil: A thin layer of aluminum or alloys. Tag: Paper stock that is typically thick. Static Cling: Vinyl face stock, no pressure, sensitive adhesive, with a liner. CFIA Approved: Paper or film, direct or indirect food contact. FACESTOCK/ MATERIALS

23 #1. Paper Matte Litho. This is an uncoated, white, matte paper stock that is suitable when you want a material that won t smear if you were to write or type on it. Typical applications include sheet feed laser printers, and computer pin fed shipping labels. LABEL MATERIALS & DESCRIPTIONS

24 #2 Paper Semi-Gloss This is a coated semi gloss in appearance, white stock that comes with many different adhesives. Used on the packaging of seafood, poultry and other meat products. Also useful when bar coding is needed. CFIA approved materials available. LABEL MATERIALS & DESCRIPTIONS

32 #11 Fluorescent Stocks An uncoated stock Available in assorted colors used as attention getters and applications where attention needs to drawn. Laser sheets are also available from the mill in assorted fluorescent flood coats. LABEL MATERIALS & DESCRIPTIONS

33 #12 10pt Tag 8 or 10 pt. tag stock weight most common, coated and uncoated does not have an adhesive. This can be used for our scratch-off cards and also ID/Membership cards. Both sides of this stock can be imprinted. LABEL MATERIALS & DESCRIPTIONS

34 Types of Adhesives STICKY BUSINESS

35 Permanent adhesives cannot be removed once applied, without causing damage to the substrate. Removable adhesives can be removed because the adhesive is weaker, without risking much damage to the substrate. However, even removable adhesives can sometimes be difficult to remove after a period of time because adhesion remains fairly strong. Ultra-Removable adhesives are the easiest to remove and do not leave any reside. They are typically used on glass and substrates where residue is undesirable. Freezer adhesives are designed to withstand extremely cold temperatures without compromising the adhesive. High-Tack adhesives are strong and work well on uneven or rough surfaces. ADHESIVE TYPES

36 Rubber: Adhesives which are based on natural or synthetic rubbers and formulated with tackifying resins, oils and antioxidants. Rubber is the most cost effective PSA and offers quick stick capability. Rubber adhesive is not recommended for high heat applications. ADHESIVE TYPES

37 Acrylic: Adhesives formulated with acrylic polymers and generally has a better long term aging and more resistance to solvents and environmental factors. Acrylic adhesives typically develop a stronger bond than the traditional Rubber adhesive and are able to take higher temperatures ADHESIVE TYPES

38 Silicone: Formulated with Silicone polymers and the only adhesive that will bond well with silicone substrates. Silicone adhesives are relatively expensive and have a very low initial tack, but can withstand higher temperatures than both Rubber and Acrylic adhesive. ADHESIVE TYPES
