WEEK 75 What Does this Mean? Weekly Family Devotions on: THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers. On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. This Week s Focus: What is the work of the Holy Spirit? This Week s Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for entering our sinful hearts and making us your own dear children. Help us live as your children, gladly obeying your Word out of love for our dear Savior. We pray in his name. Amen. MONDAY: August 20 In Ephesians 2:1, God tells us that we are by nature spiritually dead. What does that mean? When we were born, we had no faith. We were dead in sin and so also not able to believe in God on our own. Read the following passages. According to these passages, why are we unable to believe in Jesus on our own? Genesis 6:5 - Our hearts, by nature, are unable to think, say, or do anything that pleases God. Romans 7:18 - Nothing good lives in us. We are incapable of making good decisions on our own. TUESDAY: August 21 Read 1 Corinthians 12:3. By ourselves, it is impossible for anyone to believe. How then is it possible that we are brought to faith? The Holy Spirit leads us to know and confess that Jesus is Lord. Read 1 Corinthians 2:14. Evaluate this statement: In order to get into heaven, we have to accept Jesus into our hearts? We aren t able to accept Jesus (decision theology). Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit. WEDNESDAY: August 22 Recall what happened on Pentecost (Acts 2). When the Holy Spirit filled the hearts of his disciples, they were able to preach about Jesus in many different languages. That day about three thousand people received the gift of the Holy Spirit. What was that gift? Faith. How did the Holy Spirit bring them to faith? He worked through the words Peter preached and through the Sacrament of Baptism.

THURSDAY: August 23 Read 2 Thessalonians 2: God chose us to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and faith. Sanctify means to set apart from the unbelieving world by bringing to faith. What did the Spirit use to set us apart for faith? The gospel the good news about Jesus. FRIDAY: August 24 I don t go to church much, Dawn said. I don t understand the customs. They spend a lot of time talking about the Bible, and I don t understand the custom of sprinkling water on babies. How would you respond to Dawn? Those two things teaching from the Bible and Baptism are the very tools God uses to bring people to faith. Don t avoid them. They are great blessings fro m God. SATURDAY: August 25 What is the work of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit calls us to faith through God s Word and Baptism. For More Study (and to help parents better prepare for this week s lessons): Read through Luther s Small Catechism pg Read from Luther s Large Catechism: The Creed The Second Article Read / Sing together as a family Hymn 190 We Now Implore God the Holy Ghost In the hymn title, the word implore means to urgently ask or beg for something. We implore God the Holy Spirit for a stronger faith. Other Prayers You Can Use (as a family before everyone leaves for school / work or goes to bed!) Luther s Morning Prayer In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.* I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger. Keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life my please you. Into your hands I commend my body and soul and all things. Let your holy angel be with me that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen. Luther s Evening Prayer In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.* I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day from all harm and danger. Forgive me all my sins, and graciously keep me this night. Into your hands I commend my body and soul and all things. Let your holy angel be with me that the wicked for may have no power over me. Amen. * In the morning and evening, when you get up or go to bed, make the sign of the holy cross and say, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (The Small Catechism) Questions taken from Faith Foundations: Catechism Lessons The Basic Truths of the Bible. Vol 2, Milwaukee, WI: Northwestern Publishing House, 2008

WEEK 76 What Does this Mean? Weekly Family Devotions on: THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keepsnit with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers. On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. This Week s Focus: What is another blessing we receive from the Holy Spirit? This Week s Prayer: Holy Spirit, you have enlightened by dark sinful heart to see my Savior. Help me trust in Jesus as my Redeemer, and give me strength to remain in the true faith to the end of my life. Amen. MONDAY: August 27 Recall the account of the Emmaus disciples in Luke 24: Like all the others, these disciples misunderstood the reason for Christ s coming. They had thought he was going to restore Israel to power. With his crucifixion, their hopes were dashed. They didn t even recognize Jesus when he came to them. Jesus could have simply told them who he was and that he had risen from the dead. Why was it better for them they he spent a lot of time teaching what all the Scriptures said about him? As he went through the Scriptures, the Spirit was able to give the disciples the spiritual understanding that this is what the Scriptures had promised all along. TUESDAY: August 28 Read again Luke 24: As he was retelling the story of the Emmaus disciples in Sunday School, a little boy said, When Jesus gave thanks and handed out the bread, the light went on for the disciples. What did he mean by that? They had been in darkness before that. They hadn't recognized who Jesus was or what he had come to do. When they say Jesus break the bread, the Spirit illuminated their hearts so they could understand the things Jesus had been telling them. WEDNESDAY: August 29 In the following passages, what gifts of God has the Holy Spirit made known to us through the gospel? 1 Corinthians 6:11 - The forgiveness of sins Romans 8:28 - Comfort in trials Philippians 4:7 - Peace

THURSDAY: August 30 With one or two sentences explain how, in Romans 8:1, the Holy Spirit shows us the hope we have in Christ. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see the sure hope we have that we will not be condemned by God but will live with him forever in heaven. FRIDAY: August 31 Imagine two families that have lost their homes in a hurricane. One family lives in spiritual darkness. One has been blessed with the enlightening work of the Holy Spirit. How might the two families respond to the following questions or statements? Is our trial punishment for our sins? Those who live in darkness might be afraid that what is happening is punishment for something they did. Those who have been enlightened now that Jesus took their punishment upon himself. There is no condemnation for them. We have lost everything that counts. Those who live in darkness - the possessions they have most may be their only treasure. Those who have been enlightened by the Spirit know that their possessions are only blessings God gives for a time. The things that count are the spiritual blessings that are theirs through Christ. SATURDAY: September 1 What is another blessing of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit enlightens us so that we recognize God s gifts of forgiveness, peace, hope, joy, and comfort. For More Study (and to help parents better prepare for this week s lessons): Read through Luther s Small Catechism pg Read from Luther s Large Catechism: The Creed The Third Article Read / Sing together as a family Hymn 376 Jesus, Your Blood and Righteousness Our sin, our shame, our guilt, our fears: these are the obstacles that cause us to stumble here on earth and try to rob us of eternal life in heaven. What a joy and relief to know that Jesus took all our sins and self doubts to the cross! Let s thank him for the victory he won for us. Other Prayers You Can Use To Ask a Blessing The eyes of all look to you, O Lord, and you give them their good at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. Amen. Lord God, heavenly Father, bless us through these gifts which we receive from your bountiful goodness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. To Say Grace Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Amen. Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank you for all your gifts, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 5 WEEK 77 What Does this Mean? This Week s Focus: What are good works in the sight of God? This Week s Prayer: Lord God, Holy Spirit, we thank you for bringing us to faith in Christ Jesus our Savior. Fill our hearts with holy thoughts and pure desires. Give us the power and will always to do things that are good in your sight. Help us so that everything we do is an act of love that glorifies you and helps our neighbor. Hear our prayer for Jesus sake. Amen. MONDAY: September 3 Read the story of Zaccheaus in Luke 19:1-10. When God brought him to faith, Zacchaeus became a changed man. How did he show his faith? He gave much of his wealth to the poor and to those whom he had cheated. Why do you think Zacchaeus life changed so much? He realized that he had been sinning. Faith in Jesus as the Savior led him to want to thank Jesus by doing those things. TUESDAY: September 4 Read John 15:5. When a branch is cut from a vine, the leaves wither and die. When the branches remain connected, they bear fruit. We (branches) are connected to Christ by faith. What fruit do we produce? Good works that glorify God. Read Hebrews 11:6. Why are works done out of faith the only kind that please God? Works done out of faith are done in loving thanks to glorify God. Works not done out of faith and love for God are done for personal honor or gain and are not pleasing to God. WEDNESDAY: September 5 Read Luke 18: List some of the works the Pharisee boasted about in his self-righteous prayer. He boasted that he was better than most other people, he fasted twice a week, and he gave a tenth of everything he had.

Read Matthew 15:9. What tragic verdict does God give about such people? They worship in vain. Their works are meaningless. THURSDAY: September 6 Read John 14:15. How do we know what are truly good works? God tells us, whatever we do in faith. Read Ecclesiastes 12:13. Where does God show us the good works he wants us to do? In his commandments. FRIDAY: September 7 Good works occur naturally in the lives of believers. They are evidence of faith. What are some opportunities we have to do good works for one another in our family? Answers will vary. SATURDAY: September 8 What are good works in the sight of God? In God s sight, good works are all things Christians do in faith, using the Ten Commandments as their guide. For More Study (and to help parents better prepare for this week s lessons): Read through Luther s Small Catechism pg Read from Luther s Large Catechism: The Creed The Third Article Read / Sing together as a family Hymn 392 Not Unto Us Sometimes we Christians think highly of ourselves because of the things we do. However, we need to be reminded of who we were and what God has done for us and to give all glory and praise to him who loves us. This is most certainly true. This Week s Focus: How does the Holy Spirit keep us in the faith? This Week s Prayer: Holy Spirit, give us fighting spirits that push away evil thoughts, words and actions and instead choose what follows your commands. When we fail, forgive our sins through Jesus our Savior. In his name we pray. Amen. MONDAY: September 10 Read the story of Peter s denial in Matthew 26:31-35, Have each person give one detail at a time of Peter s denial. List three reasons why we wouldn t have expected Peter to ever deny Jesus. He was one of Jesus special chosen disciples. He had been with Jesus for three years. He often seemed to be the leader of the disciples. He had just promised Jesus that he would never deny him. What was the problem with Peter s trust? He trusted in himself to be able to remain firm in his faith. What would have been a better response when Jesus predicted that all the disciples would fall away? May it never be. Lord, I am so weak. Give me strength so that I will never deny you.. TUESDAY: September 11 What three enemies try to undermine our faith and lead us away from God? Ephesians 6:11-12 the devil 1 John 2:15 the world Galatians 5:17 our sinful natures Why is it so important that our faith remains strong? Through faith God keeps us safe until judgment day. WEDNESDAY: September 12 Read Ephesians 3:16. Peter made the mistake of trusting in his own strength. What is the source of our strength? The Holy Spirit.

Read the account of the Ethiopian and Philip in Acts 8: How did the Ethiopian come to faith? The Holy Spirit worked in his heart through the message of Jesus in the Bible and through Baptism. THURSDAY: September 13 Read Ephesians 6: List the pieces of armor that God gives for our protection? Belt of truth, gospel of peace, shield of faith, breastplate of righteousness, helmet of salvation Evaluate this statement: Each piece of armor gets us power form the gospel. The belt of truth is the gospel message that Jesus is our Savior. Righteousness comes through faith in the gospel. We are ready when we have the message that brings peace between God and humans. FRIDAY: September 14 What does the Holy Spirit use to keep us safe for salvation? What does the Holy Spirit use to keep us in the faith? The Gospel Read Romans 1:16. How does the Gospel get its power? The Holy Spirit works through the gospel to bring people to faith and to keep them in the faith. SATURDAY: September 15 How does the Holy Spirit keep us in the faith? The Holy Spirit keeps and preserves us in the faith through the Gospel.
