Bienvenidos a español 1022! This class is a first year Spanish course developed for students with previous language experience. The instruction and context are delivered by a combination of in class face- to- face meetings and a wide range of online activities. The different online components were designed to help you become a more successful language learner by giving you the opportunity to explore different learning modes independently and to provide more exposure to the Spanish language. You will have the opportunity to experience different accents and regional variations, not just your instructor s, as well as a wealth of other authentic materials that would not be readily accessible in a regular classroom. For that reason the course requires a considerable amount of independent work to be completed online, outside of the classroom contact hours. Methodology. Spanish 1022, like all the language classes in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, is taught in a communicative manner. This methodology is supported by many years of research and it is probably different from what you have experienced before in other language classes. Our approach is based on three fundamental premises of Second Language Acquisition theory: 1. Language learning does not occur in a linear, additive fashion, which means that teaching discrete items does not lead to immediate mastery of such items. Rather, language learning is a gradual and complex process. 2. Learners need substantial exposure to rich, comprehensible input, because in trying to understand the input and paying attention to its meaning, they learn the language forms. 3. Learners also need plenty of opportunities to use the language for real purposes in order to learn it. This occurs in the context of interaction. One of the key features of our approach and our textbook is the emphasis on interaction. For us, interaction is more than an opportunity to practice the language; it is the way that language is learned. This means that in order to be successful at learning, you must be willing to try new forms and vocabularies even before you feel that you have mastered them. We will provide as many opportunities as possible to practice actual communication in the classroom and your active participation in class is expected at all times. Language students often feel that learning would be easier if only they understood grammar. Keep in mind that explicit knowledge of grammar principles does not enable you to communicate. In order to make the best of class time for communicative activities, explanations of grammar will be avoided in class. Grammar points are explained in the text and you are expected to study them thoroughly with the help on the resources provided in. These online materials will give you ample practice opportunities and you are cordially invited to obtain individual help from your instructor during office hours or in the Tutoring Lab. The ultimate goal of this program is that you will become able to speak, understand, read and write in Spanish within certain contexts (e.g. you will be able to communicate about your weekend activities and your favorite foods). We will strive to help you to develop survival skills in the language, become an independent language learner, and develop risk-taking techniques as a language learner and user within a rich and exciting cultural content. Remember that this is just the beginning of your language- learning career at the University of Minnesota!

Spanish 1022 Spring Required Materials: De la Fuente, Martín, Sans, Gente, 3rd edition. Custom Edition for University of Minnesota Pearson Prentice Hall, 2011 Online Access Code for Gente, 3 rd edtion In this class you will be using (available with your Online Access Code) powered by Pegasus, an online educational resource built specifically for this class. Your instructor may post announcements, the course syllabus, lecture notes, homework assignments, or exams. Once you register, you will have easy access to all your materials with just a few clicks! Detailed instructions on how to register for are included in the course Moodle page. Weekly schedule. Spanish 1022 is a five credit, five-day-a-week class. You are requested to leave all five days of the week available and not to schedule work or another class since some weeks the class will meet every day. Those days that you are not in the classroom allow for the time that you and your instructor will spend online developing your language skills individually. Everyday you will be assigned online work in the Online Student Activity Manual, SAM in. will help you prepare for class and provide more practice after class. It is what you probably know as Lab Manual, the only difference is that ours is delivered online and that it includes additional materials to help you learn and master the course material. In addition you will have online activities assigned in Moodle and you will turn in your writing samples in an online writing portfolio environment called, which means notebook in Spanish. Your instructor will support your writing with individualized feedback. Moodle Course Page. The Course ID code for and, the weekly overviews and information, all rubrics, unit test and final exam study guides, project expectations and descriptions, oral exchange information and additional materials are included in the Moodle course page. It is important to check the page frequently. Your instructor will post all grades in the Moodle Course Page grade book and will communicate any important information using the News and Information Forum. Your instructor s information postings will also go to your University of Minnesota account. Do not ignore them! Placement. If you feel that you are not enrolled at the proper level, speak with your instructor about the problem as soon as possible. If your instructor feels you are not at the proper level, s/he may be able to suggest an alternative course. Outside of Class. Although we will devote the majority of class time to speaking/listening activities, your ability to "survive" in Spanish1022 will depend on your willingness to make the best use of your study time. Regular and active practice with online materials is a required part of the program and will help prepare for some class activities and reinforce others. We suggest that frequent, short practice periods (30-45 minutes) are much more effective than marathon (5 hours once a week) sessions.

Spanish 1022 Spring Exams. All exams will include both oral and written questions to test your listening as well as your reading and writing ability. Exams may include oral and/or written questions. Exams will concentrate primarily on recently learned material, but you are responsible for previously learned items. (All learning of new material necessarily involves building on what you have learned previously!) Speaking/listening skills will also be evaluated by your instructor based on your daily classroom participation and improvement, weekly tareas and through one oral exchange (partnered interview). 4 Spanish 1022 Spring Tutor Lab: All Spanish language students are invited to visit tutors Monday through Friday in 34 Folwell Hall between 9:00 am and 5:00pm217 Folwell Hall. This is a free service provided by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies. To make your visit more productive, have your questions ready before hand. Keep in mind that tutors do not proofread homework assignments or compositions. Computer Lab: The Computer Lab is located in 135 Jones Hall. Check the CLA Language Center web page for hours Course Evaluations/Questions Near the end of the semester, you will have the opportunity to evaluate the course, textbooks, and your instructor, but your comments are welcome at any time. You should direct them to the Supervisor of your level, Dr. Matos-Schultz, or to the Director of Language Instruction (DLI), Dr. Villar. Office Phone Number Office Hours Dr. S. McMillen Villar Director of Language Instruction villa003@umn.edu 214A Folwell Hall By appointment Dr. F. Matos-Schultz Level Supervisor matos001@umn.edu 214C Folwell Hall Mondays and Wednesdays 11:30 AM. to 12:30 P.M. and by appointment. Are you ready for a hybrid course? Information to keep in mind. In order to be successful in a hybrid course you do not need to be an expert with computers and you do not even need to own one, as there are plenty of computer labs around our campus. You are responsible for having your computer ready by reading and following the information regarding, and Moodle very carefully. Everything that you need to know is in or in the document. You do need to follow the course syllabus and manage your time efficiently. You should schedule your online time regularly and frequently. You have work every Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday in. The weeks that you have a assignment, it will be available from Wednesday to Sunday. All online work is at 11:55 P.M. in and 11:59 P.M. in. If you work close to the date (for example after 10:00 P.M.) your chances of being able to submit your work on time are significantly diminished. There are over 500 students with the same date as you. It is your responsibility to turn in the work on time. No online work will be accepted late. If you miss a couple of dates in, it will not affect your grade. If it happens frequently, it will. There is one optional at the end of the semester to allow you to make up a missed assignment. Online work makes up 30% of your course grade (20% for and 10% for ).

Spanish 1022 Spring COURSE POLICIES Scholastic Dishonesty. Scholastic dishonesty is any act that violates the rights of another student with respect to academic work or that involves misrepresentation of a student s own work. Scholastic dishonesty includes (but is not limited to) cheating on assignments or examinations, plagiarizing (misrepresenting as one s own anything done by another), submitting the same or substantially similar papers (or creative work) for more than one course without consent of all instructors concerned, depriving another of necessary course materials, and sabotaging another s work. (CLA Classroom Grading and Examination Procedures) Scholastic dishonesty in any portion of the academic work for a course shall be grounds for awarding a grade of F or N for the entire course. NOTE: Use of on-line translators is not allowed. Work done with the assistance of on-line translators will receive no credit. If you have any questions regarding plagiarism, please go the the following site: Credits and Workload Expectations. For undergraduate courses, one credit is defined as equivalent to an average of three hours of learning effort per week (over a full semester) necessary for an average student to achieve an average grade in the course. For example, a student taking a three credit course that meets for three hours a week should expect to spend an additional six hours a week on coursework outside the classroom. Remember that Spanish 1022 is a five credit course. Spanish Department Final Exam Make-Up Policy. The ONLY valid excuses for taking a make-up final exam are the following: 1) you have another U of M exam scheduled at that time, or 2) you have 3 exams scheduled within a 16 hour period. In order to take the make-up final, you must present, in person or via to matos001@umn.edu, a current official copy of your class schedule and the class syllabus the Wednesday prior to the last day of class to your course supervisor (Dr. F. Matos-Schultz). If you prefer to turn in your documentation in person, stop by the Folwell 214 C during office hours or by appointment. You will need to bring or a printed enrollment summary (go to onestop.umn.edu) with your student ID number and your Spanish 1022 instructor s name on the upper right-hand corner of the sheet. Only official University of Minnesota scheduled exams (regular exam dates) will be considered as a conflict. Failure to register for the conflict final will result in your inability to take the make-up final and may result in failure of the course, for this is not considered an extraordinary circumstance to merit an incomplete. Complete schedule of final examinations is currently available at: onestop.umn.edu (click on calendars). Pass/fail option. In general, students should plan to take 1xxx-level language courses for a grade. S/N or auditing courses is not a recommended option. Please note that auditors need to be registered and will be asked to complete all homework, quizzes, examinations, and peer work activities assigned to students enrolled for A-F credit.

Spanish 1022 Spring Makeup examinations. The dates for all exams are clearly marked and highlighted in your syllabus. Only legitimate and verifiable reasons will be considered for a make up exam. According to the University of Minnesota guidelines legitimate excuses or excused absences for missing class or a test are the following: participation in a scheduled activity of an official University student organization, a religious holiday, verified confining illness, serious verifiable family emergencies, subpoenas, jury duty, and military service. It is the student s responsibility to notify his/her instructor of any excused absence as far in advance as possible. (CLA Classroom Grading and Examination Procedures) If the student has a legitimate excuse, s/he will complete the Excused Absence Form. The student needs to fill it out and include a photocopy of the pertaining documentation. Your instructor will keep the form and documentation on file. Turning in the absence form will not automatically excuse the student s absence. Attendance Attendance is expected and required every day during the entire class period. Being late is not acceptable and it is disruptive. First day: According to university policy, any student who is absent the first day of class can be denied admission to the class. All students, both registered and non-registered, will lose their place in class and move to the bottom of the waiting list after any absence during the first five days of class. Unexcused absences/ Personal Days. You are allowed a limited number personal days. Exceeding the allowed absences will result in the lowering of your course grade. Students are allowed TWO unexcused absences/personal days in evening sections, and THREE in regular sections Excused Absence Form Please notify your instructor ahead of time if you know in advance that you will be absent from class. When you are/will be absent from class for a documented cause, you may return this form to your instructor for the possibility of obtaining an excused absence. Turning in this form does not mean that your absence will automatically be excused. 1. Name of student 2. Date(s) of absence(s) 3. Reason for absence (please mark one): Medical or dental emergency University sponsored extracurricular or cocurricular participation Other. Explain 4. Attach a photocopy of the documentation for this absence. Your instructor will keep this form on file,..

Spanish 1022 Spring RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STUDYING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE 1. DON'T CRAM! A foreign language must be assimilated little by little. Work in 30 to 45 minute study sessions, but frequently, twice a day or more if possible. Always review material studied during the last session. 2. Learning new vocabulary. Group words into categories like nouns (must be learned with their gender marker, i.e., la casa) verbs (check if their conjugation is regular or irregular) adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. Make special note of any idiomatic expressions. Make flash cards of words and structures that you have difficulty remembering. Carry them in your pocket and go over them whenever you have a few minutes. 3. Review the new grammatical structures introduced in each chapter. 4. When practicing new vocabulary, write and say the words out loud. This will help you remember them. 5. If you have trouble understanding your TA in class, remember that it is not necessary to understand every word that is said. Try to listen for the main idea. 6.STUDY WITH SOMEONE ELSE WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Many of the exercises in the book are meant to be practiced with two people. 7. If you need help, talk with your instructor. S/he has weekly office hours and will be glad to answer questions. If you have a lot of problems, s/he may be able to suggest a tutor. 8. USE THE ONLINE RESOURCES IN. You have a number of tools to help you understand the material covered in each lesson, such as grammar tutorials, verb charts and a glossary. 8. DON'T PANIC. Learning a language is a long process. Perseverance and hard work every day are the key to improvement and success.
