1 Good evening. Welcome to our Robins Parents Phonics Workshop Part 2.

4 What if my child is not meeting these expectations? All children will move on to the next phase, but children who are not yet secure in Phase 2 will have extra intervention to fill these gaps whilst still teaching the children new sounds.

7 The letters and sounds we are learning in the Robins Class We continue to use the Jolly Phonics actions to aid retention of digraphs/trigraphs

8 The letters and sounds we are learning in the Robins Class Children will now work on recognising digraphs and trigraphs within decodable words and using these when segmenting and blending to read. ship coin path

10 The letters and sounds we are learning in the Robins Class Children will also be taught to segment words into individual phonemes to spell decodable words. We still use a phoneme frame (one phoneme per box-can be a digraph/trigraph)

11 The Tricky for now Words we are learning in the Robins Class Children will also be introduced to new Tricky (for now) words. she, we, he, me be, was, you, they, all, are, my, her These are words that have to be read by sight as they are not decodable. It is also useful to begin to spell these words.

12 The Tricky for now Words we are learning in the Robins Class We will look at the following high frequency words (read and write) will, that, this, then, them, with, see, for, now, down, look, too,

13 In Phase 3 we focus much more on reading and writing captions and sentences. We will look at the capital letters for all letters sounds learnt (including how to write them in digraps/trigraphs) We will talk about vowels and consonants.

14 End of Phase 3 (Spring B) expectations are Give the sound when shown all or most Phase 2 and Phase 3 letters graphemes; Find all or most Phase 2 and Phase 3 graphemes, from a display, when given the sound; Find all or most Phase 2 and Phase 3 graphemes, from a display, when given the name; Find the capital letter, from a display, which corresponds with any single lower case letter given; Be able to blend and read CVC words (this includes words containing the vowel or consonant digraphs and trigraphs learned so far); Be able to segment and make phonetically plausible attempts at CVC words; Be able to read the tricky words he, she, we, me, be, was, my, you, her, they, all, are; Be able to spell the tricky words the, to, I, no, go, into, and Write each letter properly when following a model.

15 HOW we teach these letters and sounds in the Robins Class Phonics takes place first thing in the morning 9.10am 9.30am. It is fast and fun! It is split into 4 parts Recap and review Teach new sound Practise read/write words containing taught sound Apply reading/writing sentences and captions

16 HOW we teach these letters and sounds in the Robins Class The phonemes learnt each day are displayed on the phonics working wall and will be referred to during phonic sessions, focus activities with the teacher and during independent play. The Tricky for now words are displayed as well as previously taught phonemes.

17 How you can help your child at home. I hope that you are finding the weekly newsletters useful and informative The Phonics Newsletter tells you the sounds learnt that week and suggests activities for you to do at home. It will also contain links to suitable websites with games that we will have played in class (www.phonicsplay.co.uk, *ensure children have learnt the sounds in the games!

18 How you can help your child at home. It would be useful now to focus on writing sentences rather than just individual words. e.g. The coin is on the ship. Remind children to put a finger space between each word, and that sentences end with a full stop.

19 The letters and sounds we are learning in the Robins Class Please focus on accurate letter formation at home. Children should Tripod grip for pencil Writing from left to right and top to bottom Capital letters/lower case in the correct place Correct orientation Writing on lines, not too big

20 The reading books we use to teach your child to read in the Robins Class Once children have demonstrated that they could accurately segment and blend to read CVC words they were moved onto the PINK book band. They will be then moved onto the RED book band when we have covered more of the Phase 3 phonemes.

21 The reading books we use to teach your child to read in the Robins Class Children will be heard read at least once a week with the teacher/teaching assistant. Children now read in reading groups, with other children who are reading at a similar level. Groups will change as children s reading ability develops.

22 The reading books we send home in the Robins Class Your child will not bring home the book they have read in school. They will take home books from the band below their current reading band. e.g. if your child reads RED books at school they will read PINK books at home. Why? This allows reading at home to be an enjoyable experience. I will teach your child to read, you can enjoy hearing them read a book that they are confident to read.

23 The reading books we send home in the Robins Class The responsibility for changing home reading books is now yours. Baskets of home reading books will be available at the start of the day. Please only take one book at a time, and return the book before choosing a new one. Children in before school club are welcome to come down to the classroom and change their books.

24 The reading books we send home in the Robins Class I will write in your child s reading diary which colour book band they can choose books from and will always notify you when their book band has changed. Record all home reading in your child s reading diary. (and continue to share a wide range of reading materials with your child)
