4 Knitting with Penny Heeren Penny Heeren learned to knit as a young child, but found a new appreciation for it eight years ago. She has not been able to put down her knitting needles since and now dedicates much of her time to charity knitting. Heeren loves the opportunity her class provides for sharing her passion and love for knitting with new people and getting to see their delight when they figure out they can make useful and beautiful things with sticks and string. Knitting 101 Think those hand-knitted scarves and hats look great, but don t know where to start? You will learn basic knitting skills in this class taught by Penny Heeren. Get started with needle and yarn sizes, slip knots, casting on, knitting, purling, casting off, fringe, and trims. Bring size 11 or 13 knitting needles and one ball of yarn. This class will help you understand how to read patterns, identify your stitches, start new cast-ons and bind-offs, fix your mistakes, seam knitted items, and cleanly weave in ends. Students should bring two pairs of size 11 or 13 knitting needles and two balls of yarn. Prerequisites: Students need to know how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off (all covered in Knitting 101). 8 DANCE Dance the Night Away with Mike and Janet Mike and Janet Dennis have been swing dancing for seven years. Their first swing class was the class they are now teaching. Mike is from Des Moines, and Janet is from southeast Iowa. Both are graduates of Central College in Pella, Iowa. Mike works in technology systems, and Janet is a museum educator, but they share a passion for swing music, dance, and stylings. Mike and Janet provide a relaxed atmosphere and nice venues. Their class is a great opportunity to introduce dance to people who do not want to commit to classes in a formal studio. Their favorite part of teaching is meeting new students and building their skills and confidence until they can dance at parties, weddings, and community dances without hesitation. Swing Dance, Beginning Jitterbug Swing Dance is HOT and very cool! Jitterbug is an easy and fun swing dance that can be done to all kinds of music. It s a lively dance with lots of style and no complicated footwork. You ll learn the basic steps and some showy moves, and will explore different music styles to dance to. You will be able to go out dancing by class end! Partner required, but no previous dance experience needed. Course taught by Janet and Mike Dennis. Tuesdays, 10/6-10/27, 7-8:30 p.m., $64/ couple. Fairmeadows Elementary, Community Room, #DAN05. Swing Dance, Continuing Jitterbug Have you learned the basic Jitterbug steps and need some new moves? This three-week class builds on the moves taught in Beginning Jitterbug class with additional turns, kicks, and spins to spice up your dancing. Lolly kicks, Texas Tommy, and Around the World moves will give you some new ideas. Partner required, and students should have taken Beginning Jitterbug or be able to do basic East Coast Swing step combinations, and inside and outside turns. Course taught by Janet and Mike Dennis. (see page 15 for details some exclusions do apply) Get Fit with Caeli Esser Caeli has been a full-time professional for over 14 years. She has earned over 20 fitness and wellness certifications, and owns a mobile fitness company called ClubFit. She does a combinations of personal training and classes throughout the metro area. WERQ is one of her favorite classes to teacher. Caeli feels blessed that she is able to do what she loves every day! When she is not working people out she is busy being mom to three young children. New! Barre Fitness Everyone wants the body of a dancer: lean arms, flat abs and lifted, sculpted glutes! If you re not a dancer, then this class is for you! We ll bring the strengthening, lengthening, and body-boosting exercises of ballet and Pilates to you, and we promise no dance ability or experience is necessary. This fun class will challenge your smaller accessory muscles and balance, which will sculpt your abs, arms, and glutes into picture perfect shape, all while helping you stretch out, so you leave feeling great. This class is designed to be done barefoot to optimize core engagement and lower body strengthening, but you may choose to wear ballet slippers or tennis shoes. Register Early Registration is required for all classes and is taken on a firstcome basis. Early Registration Discount: Register at least two weeks in advance of a class start date and receive a $5 discount off your registration. If you register online, the class price listed will automatically reflect the $5 discount if it applies. Exclusions for the discount include: all ACT classes, College Planning, and online clases. If not, please request a confirmation when registering. Refunds There is a $10 charge on all refunds except classes filled or cancelled by LEARNwest. To receive a refund, requests must be made by phone or in writing to LEARNwest before the class meets a second time. For one-night classes, refunds will only be given before the class is held.
