2 Week 1 16/01/ pm Leslie Keegan Before coming to the Bar Leslie worked as a Neurophysiologist. From his early days in practice he worked on a variety of clinical negligence and personal injury cases and he has been instructed by a variety of local authorities to deal with cases involving serious injuries or medical treatment issues relating to children. He lectures to a wide variety of professional and lay people on clinical negligence issues and devises and organises medicolegal courses for lawyers and doctors which have been widely acclaimed. He is described in Chambers & Partners as having a brilliant mind for quantum and in Legal 500 as impressive and knowledgeable. Leslie is a member of the editorial board of Facts and Figures, and regularly contributes case reports on issues of procedure and quantum to a wide variety of journals. He is also a Member of the Education and Training Committee; the Pupillage Subcommittee and the CPD Subcommittee of the Bar Standards Board. He is a regular contributor to broadcast and print media on medicolegal issues. Dr Rhona Mahony Neonatal Brain Injury Dr Mahony is Master (CEO) of the National Maternity Hospital (NMH), Dublin. She is also a practising Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, and a specialist in fetal and maternal medicine, having practised as a consultant at NMH since Dr Mahony is a member of the Executive of the Irish Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in the UK and a Honorary Clinical Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. Dr David Bogod Medicolegal aspects of obstetric, spinal and epidural anaesthesia Dr Bogod is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust where he specialises in the field of obstetric practice. He has a long-standing interest in medico-legal matters and provides expert opinions in medical negligence/ malpractice cases, consent issues and the ethics of research and clinical practice. Dr. Bogod has lectured widely on consent, negligence, risk management, obstetric issues and the pitfalls of publication, the latter drawing on his previous experience as the Editor-in-Chief of Anaesthesia. He is a past Regional Assessor for the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths and Vice President of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland and is currently President of the Obstetric Anaesthetists' Association. Julian Matthews Julian Matthews is a leading junior specialising in clinical negligence, product liability and personal injury. In clinical negligence, cases include cerebral palsy, spinal and brain injury, orthopaedic and anaesthetic accidents, delayed diagnosis of cancer and other diseases, and psychiatric injury; whilst in personal injury he specialises in brain and spinal injuries, public health matters and group actions, including stress at work and RSI. Julian also acts in professional negligence cases, for professionals at disciplinary tribunals and in health and safety matters, particularly for employers in respect of fatal or near fatal workplace accidents.

3 Learning how critical incidents are assessed in obstetrics and the basis of decision making Week 2 23/01/ pm Adam Weitzman The primary focus of Adam's practice is personal injury including clinical negligence and claims against local authorities in educational negligence and for negligent social work. He combines this with a specialisation in costs. Adam is regularly instructed in both personal injury and clinical negligence cases involving catastrophic injuries, in particular spinal and neurological injuries and amputations, and in claims under the Fatal Accidents Act. Ms Charlene Francois A Midwife s Tale With 28 years experience in midwifery, Charlene is instructed as an Expert across the UK. She works regularly as a jobbing midwife in her local district general hospital, and has worked in small, stand alone midwifery units to tertiary referral hospitals. At an earlier point in her career Charlene was Director of Midwifery & Gynaecology at St. Georges Hospital in London. Charlene has worked as an expert witness for 16 years, has a great interest in medico-legal work, and holds a LL.M. Mr Niall Kirkpatrick Plastic Surgery Issues and Expectations Niall Kirkpatrick is a Consultant Plastic surgeon and Lead Clinician of the Craniofacial Unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where he is also a core member of the North West London specialist multidisciplinary team for the management of skin cancers and a member of the multidisciplinary team for vascular anomalies. Niall is a Honorary Consultant at Guy s and St Thomas Hospital where he is a member of the national complex Neurofibromatosis-1 multidisciplinary unit and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, London. Niall is a Trustee, man and the Medical Director of Facing The World, an international children s charity providing Craniofacial surgery to children worldwide. He has previously been Consultant Plastic surgeon in the Head and Neck Cancer Units at both the Royal Marsden Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. He is an examiner for The Royal College of Surgeons Intercollegiate Board in Plastic Surgery and a past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Plastic Surgery Section. Simon Wheatley Simon's principle area of practice is maximum severity personal injury claims and brain damage cases. In clinical negligence, Simon specialises in claims involving injury at birth, cerebral palsy, failure to diagnose, failure to inform, and a variety of procedures including laparotomy and laparoscopy. He also appears on behalf of medical and other professionals in disciplinary proceedings.

4 Week 3 30/01/ pm Steven Ford QC Steven s practice focuses on personal injury and professional negligence claims involving social workers, medical professionals and teachers. He represents local authorities, charities and private social care, religious and educational establishments in claims concerning child abuse, social care and educational negligence, stress at work, bullying and deliberate injury. He acts in clinical negligence cases, with a particular focus on claims involving psychiatric damage. He is experienced in all types of personal injury claims. He appears before disciplinary tribunals and at inquests and other enquiries. He advises public sector and corporate bodies on compliance issues associated with his areas of practice. Ms Peta Longstaff Accident & Emergency Ms Longstaff has been an Accident & Emergency Consultant for the last 24 years and has worked in various departments, although her two longest serving jobs have been a 10 year stint at Ealing Hospital and 14 years at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. She has been extensively involved in training junior doctors and introducing risk management systems. Ms Longstaff has also provided numerous expert opinions both for defendants and claimants. Recently she has become an Assistant Medical Director for the London Ambulance Service. Dr Michael Jeremy Ingram The headache of headaches in General Practice Dr Ingram is a general practitioner principal in a ten doctor training practice in Radlett, Hertfordshire, where he has practised since He is experienced in all aspects of general practice work and has maintained his generalist skills throughout. He sits on Hertfordshire Local Medical Committee, the statutory representative body for local GPs. He is man of the Conference of LMC s, the main national meeting for GPs and is involved in the formulation of political policy within the profession. He serves as a member of the General Practitioners Committee of the BMA the national representative body for General Practice and is responsible for the implementation of policy directions. He sits on their Clinical & Prescribing subcommittee. He has been approved as an associate trainer of general practice registrars and foundation year post-graduate doctors. He has a particular interest in travel medicine and lecture and writes extensively on the subject. Since 1992 he has run academic courses for general practitioners. In addition the training practice has regular clinical meetings and audits so his understanding of both contemporary and recent general practice is highly developed. He writes and broadcasts both in the professional and lay media. He has a regular column in the British Medical Journal and has also published academic papers therein. He has been acting as an expert witness since 1990 and has reported on several hundred of cases. With one or two exceptions he has been instructed by solicitors for the claimant. He is a member of the AvMA panel. Leslie Keegan Before coming to the Bar Leslie worked as a Neurophysiologist. 5 Week 4 06/02/ pm Simeon Maskrey QC Simeon specializes in maximum severity clinical negligence and personal injury cases and in multi-handed product liability work. His widely recognized expertise across all aspects of medical jurisprudence means that he is also instructed in public law, criminal and coroners' courts cases involving challenging medical issues, particularly where the outcome of the case may have an impact on civil liability. Brian Heather: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Mr Heather was appointed Consultant in General Surgery, with a special interest in Vascular Surgery, to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in After retiring from NHS practice in July 2007, he continued his private consulting practice until He now prepares medico-legal reports, accepting approximately 60 new instructions each year. Publications and research interests include varicose vein surgery, venous thrombosis prophylaxis, screening and surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysms, treatment of acute limb ischaemia. During his career Mr Heather has been a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland, the Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain & Ireland, the European Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, He was also the South West Regional representative on the Council of The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland, , the Royal College of Surgeons Specialty Adviser (General Surgery) for the South West Region, and man of the South West Regional Training Committee in General Surgery, He is listed by the UK Register of Expert Witnesses, the MedicalExpertsOnLine and AvMA and has completed approximately 700 reports in cases involving alleged clinical negligence since Master Roberts: Master Roberts was called to the Bar in 1983 and practised as a Barrister from Lamb Building and Temple Garden Chambers, specialising in personal injury and clinical negligence litigation. He was a member of the Bar Council Professional Conduct Committee and an instructor on Middle Temple advocacy courses. He sat as a part-time member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals Panel and as a part-time Immigration Judge until his appointment as a Master of the Senior Courts, Queen's Bench Division in He is one of the two specialist clinical negligence Masters. In 2010 he was appointed a member of the Civil Justice Council Injury Reform Committee. He is a contributing editor to the 'Civil Procedure', dealing with clinical negligence throughout the two volumes and limitation in Section 8.

6 Week 5 13/02/ pm Mr Derek Sweeting QC Derek Sweeting s practice is focused on contentious civil litigation, and advisory work in the High Court and the Court of Appeal. He retains a keen interest in maximum severity personal injury and clinical negligence work. As well as representing claimants, he is regularly instructed by the Attorney General in this field and appeared for the MOD in Bailey v MOD [2008] EWCA Civ 883 (causation and material contribution in clinical negligence claim). Mr Ahmed Ahmed Principles and Complications of Bariatric Surgery Mr Ahmed is a consultant in upper gastrointestinal surgery and lead bariatric surgeon at St Mary's Hospital, London and Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Imperial College London. He also runs a private practice at the Cromwell Hospital in Harley Street. He has performed over 5,000 laparoscopic bariatric procedures, including over 2500 gastric bypasses. His main areas of interest are in complex revisional bariatric surgeries and he receives referrals from all over the UK and abroad for his expert skills. He trained in general and upper GI surgery in the UK, at Stanford University and the University of Rochester in the US. He trains surgeons in the field of bariatric surgery and is on the faculty of numerous courses on bariatric surgery. Mr Ahmed is often consulted by other professionals and medicolegal experts for his opinions on complex bariatric surgery cases. He is actively involved in bariatric surgery research having undertaken a PhD degree in the mechanisms of complications of gastric bypass surgery at Imperial College London. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals. He is on the editorial boards of the main obesity scientific journals SOARD and Obesity Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the International Federation of Surgery for Obesity (IFSO), the Society of American Gastroenterological and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS). Mr Ahmed's Imperial Weight Centre Bariatric Surgery Unit in London has been designated an International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery and Mr Ahmed now sits on the prestigious International Bariatric Surgery Review Committee (IBSRC), comprised of top bariatric surgeons from around the world. Professor Peter T McCollum Common Errors in Vascular Surgery Professor McCollum is Director of Clinical Effectiveness at Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. His special clinical interests are carotid disease, clinical outcome in vascular surgery, claudication and its management and stroke & cerebrovascular disease. His research interests are risk modelling in vascular surgery, hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of vascular disease, amputation level selection and clinical outcomes. Professor McCollum s publications include 200 plus published abstracts, 140 papers, 18 book chapters, 2 books and 400 plus presentations. For the past 10 years Professor McCollum s medico-legal work has concentrated on vascular trauma, iatrogenic injury and HAVS. Professor McCollum undertakes approximately 12 cases per annum.

7 Week 6 20/02/ pm Dr Peter Ellis Dr Peter Ellis is ranked by Chambers & Partners as a leading junior in clinical negligence (London, band 1). Peter practised as a hospital doctor and then as a solicitor specialising in healthcare and product liability litigation at DAC Beachcroft before transferring to the Bar. He is an Assistant Coroner in West London and a qualified mediator. He is the author of the clinical negligence division in Butterworths Personal Injury Litigation Service. He is a regular chairman and speaker at medico-legal conferences, for lawyers and healthcare professionals, and a trainer of expert medical witnesses. Dr Peter J D Evans: Chronic pain in relation to medico-legal practice Dr Evans is a Honorary Consultant in Pain Medicine at Charing Cross Hospital, London. He trained in London and later gained experience in Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand. In 1978 he was awarded a Pain Research Fellowship in Oxford. In 1982 he became a Consultant at Charing Cross Hospital and developed the chronic pain service. He was awarded Honorary Membership to The British Pain Society in 2011 for his services to Pain Medicine. He has an extensive medico-legal practice and deals with clinical negligence, personal injury and fitness to practice issues for both claimants and defendants. Adam Clemens: Described in Chambers & Partners as "a deadly advocate who adopts such a pleasant approach that before you know it he has beguiled the judge and crucified you", Adam's clinical negligence practice ranges from cerebral palsy to serious post-operative infection. He is particularly interested in human rights aspects of clinical negligence litigation, writing and speaking regularly on the subject.
