It is the student s s responsibility to ensure through their counselor that the courses they take in summer school will meet their home school s s requirements for graduation, replacement credit and the impact of the course on a student s s GPA. 1

LOCATION: The Douglas County School District High School Summer Semester will be held at most high school campuses in DCSD. COMPUTER-BASED LEARNING COURSES: For 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students needing to earn certain specific core credits or for those needing to earn elective credits which will enhance fundamental skills, online coursework offers a powerful and engaging curriculum. Most of the work needed to earn a given credit will be completed in a computer lab using OdysseyWare or NovaNet Computer- Based Learning. ON LINE LEARNING FROM HOME, HOTEL, OR ANYWHERE INTERNET CONNECTIONS ARE AVAILABLE IS ALSO AN OPTION WITH ODYSSEYWARE LEARNING. COSTS: TEACHER LED COURSES REQUIRE A MINIMUM OF 20 STUDENTS TO OFFER THE COURSE. Pre-Registration: Monday, May 2, 2011 Thursday, May 26, 2011 Pre-Registration cost: $ per course for in-district students and $ per course for out of district students traditional classroom, online/off site-self paced Late Registration: Begins Friday, May 27, 2011 Late Registration cost: $ per course for in-district student and $ per course for out of district student traditional classroom, online/off site-self paced REGISTRATION FORM: Each school will post their summer school registration form on their web site. Please turn in the registration form and payment to the individual school. STUDENTS: Students entering 9th grade as well as students finishing 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades may enroll in the Summer Semester. One semester s elective and/or required credit (0.5 Carnegie Unit) toward graduation may be earned for each course taken. CREDITS: The High School Summer Semester is intended to: Provide the opportunity to earn credit for courses taken but failed during the previous year; Provide remediation to improve specific skills; or, Provide enrichment and advanced work opportunities. Summer high school courses offer academic or elective credit toward graduation. One semester of credit and a grade will be recorded on a student s high school transcript. This grade becomes part of the student s grade point average (G.P.A.) that is used in determining class rank in the Douglas County School District. 2
3 GRADE REPORTING: Final grades will be sent home at the conclusion of each session. Parents are welcome to contact Summer Semester teachers to discuss their student s progress. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Consistent attendance is essential to course completion. Because of the length of Summer Semester classes, there are no excused absences. Any student absent more than three times will be removed from class. Three tardies equal one absence. Any combination of absences and/or tardies that exceed the above limits will cause a student to be removed from class AND FORFEIT CREDIT AND ALL TUITION. STUDENT DISCIPLINE: THE DOUGLAS COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT CODE OF CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE WILL BE ENFORCED DURING THE SUMMER SEMESTER AS IT IS DURING THE REGULAR SCHOOL YEAR. The staff will deal with all breaches of conduct. Any student who does not abide by classroom and Summer Semester expectations will be asked to leave the program. A parent may be requested to pick the student up immediately. No credit will be awarded and no refunds will be given. REGISTRATION INFORMATION: All student registration for the Summer Semester will be completed on each respective high school campus. Early registration deadline for all campuses will be May 26, Cost per course is $225 for in-district students and $275 for out of district students. Late registration for all campuses will be May 27, Cost per course for late registration will be $250 for in-district students and $300 for out of district students. Obtain a registration form on the individual school web site and return to the campus you wish to attend. Complete one form for each student. Students may register for a maximum of two courses each. Make tuition checks payable to (Name of School) Summer Semester. Tuition must be paid on day of registration. Cash, credit cards and checks will be accepted. (Returned checks subject to a $35.00 charge.) 3
4 NO PHONE-IN REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. REFUNDS SHALL ONLY BE MADE IF A CLASS IS CANCELLED due to lack of enrollment (minimum 20 students). Refunds will be issued after Summer Semester ends.
