1 8 th Grade Social Studies Performance Task Project Overview: The Paleo, Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian American cultures were the first groups of people to live in Georgia. Each of the Native American groups had their own traditions, customs, and way of life. Each of the groups also left behind varying artifacts that help archeologist and anthropologist to imagine what their lives may have been like thousands of years ago. For this task you have two goals. The first goal is to create a symbolic language for each of the Paleo, Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian Native. The second goal is to use your symbolic language to write a booklet telling a story about the lives of these Native. Georgia Performance Standard SS8H1: The student will evaluate the development of Native American cultures and the impact of European exploration and settlement on the Native American cultures in Georgia. a) Describe the evolution of Native American cultures (Paleo, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian) prior to European contact. Materials Needed 1/2 of a Paper Bag1, Tea Bag, Water, 1 Cup, Paper Towels, and Decorating Items: Glitter, Paint, Yarn, etc. Task Directions I. Make your own parchment paper. II. Make your symbols. Use the Symbolic Language page to create a legend for your symbols. You must explain what the symbols mean. III. Use your symbols to create a story about the lives of EACH of the American groups. Write out your SYMBOLIC story on your parchment paper and decorate it. Write your WRITTEN INTERPRETATION of your story on a separate sheet of paper. Share your story and legend with a classmate and see if they can read and understand your story. Symbolic Language Example Category Symbol Legend Meaning Food The Paleo Native ate large animals, such as mastodons and wooly mammoths. Homes (Dwelling) Because the Paleo Native were nomads, they moved around a lot and did not have permanent homes. They moved around a lot because they had to hunt and catch their food to survive. Tools and Weapons The Paleo Native did not have very advanced tools. They used tools such as spear points and the atlatl everyday to hunt, work and survive. Part III: Use your symbols to create a story about the lives of EACH of the American groups. Write out your SYMBOLIC story on your parchment paper and decorate it. Write your WRITTEN INTERPRETATION of your story on a separate sheet of paper. Symbolic Story: Interpretation: Long, long ago, between 10,000 BC and 8,000 BC, the Paleo Native lived in Georgia. Because the Paleo Native were nomads, they moved around a lot and did not have permanent homes. They moved around a lot because they had to hunt and catch their food to survive.
