1 FOREST SCHOOL GUIDE. Welcome to Forest School. Thank you for supporting Essex Wildlife Trust. This guide book aims to provide the information you need for successful, safe and exciting Forest School sessions with your group. 2 WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING A FOREST SCHOOL SESSION? Because the teaching and learning at Forest School is led by the children every session is different. We follow the children s interests and enthusiasms. We do plan a range of challenging, achievable and fun activities for the children to choose from but we offer them to the children and do not insist that they must take part. These activities differ according to the age and ability of the group. Examples include art and craft activities, story-telling, physical challenges and games, investigating the flora and fauna on the site, imaginary games and so on. We aim to start and finish each session with a circle-time so there is time for the children to plan and reflect on their learning in the woodland. THE ADULTS ROLE. The adults at Forest School support this child-led approach to learning by joining in the fun with the children. As a Forest School helper, therefore, you may find yourself helping to build a shelter, supervising tree climbing, laying a trail for others to follow, making dream catchers, finding bugs and many other things. Every session will be different. You will be given guidance from the Forest School leader as to what your role for the session will be but the most important thing to remember is to relax and be playful. GROUP MANAGEMENT Each group will have its own dynamic and the Forest School Leader will adapt his/her management skills accordingly. Generally though we have a system of managing the group through agreements rather than rules'. For example, children may want to climb any tree to any height. As adults we know this is unsafe and undesirable so in discussion with the children we may agree on 3 trees that can be climbed and mark a height to which the children can climb. The leader will then ask if everyone agrees. Usually they do! If children then transgress this arrangement everyone can remind them of the agreement.

3 SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT A central part of Forest School is the social and emotional development that happens. It is important, therefore, that children have the chance to solve their own problems and work out their own arguments and disagreements. It is often difficult for us, as caring adults, to stand back and let children struggle a little, but it is only through overcoming difficulties and finding their own solutions that children truly develop independence and self-confidence. Thus, it is important that we don t rush in when we think we see a problem. Think are the children in danger? If so, step in immediately. If not, keep looking and listening as unobtrusively as possible. You may need to offer guidance but try and allow the children room to flex their own emotional and social muscles. For example, two boys want to throw mud. The other children are becoming distressed by this because they want to make mud pies. They begin wailing for help from the adults who pretend they are too busy to come straight away but say they will be over in a minute. In the meantime, can t the children think of a solution? Suddenly, one of the boys announces he wants to take some mud to a different place and throw it at a tree, away from the other children. Some of the other children find him a bucket and help him fill it with mud. How different this scenario would have been if the adults had rushed in and laid down the law!

4 HEALTH AND SAFETY The health, safety and well being of participants must be our first priority. It is a shared responsibility of all adults involved in the sessions. TOILETTING There will be a toilet area in the woods that we will indicate to the children. Children should make an adult aware that they want to use the toilet area and the adult should ensure they follow the health and safety guidelines below. Only use designated toilet area. Accompanying adult should be a CRB checked member of staff from your group and/or the child s parent/carer. Child must wash hands thoroughly in water provided, dry hands, then apply antiseptic gel after using the toilet area. All waste will be disposed of responsibly by the Forest School leader. WASHING There will be lots of water and wipes provided by the Forest school leader to ensure participants can wash their hands before eating or drinking. The need for hygiene is discussed with the children as an ongoing part of the forest school learning. EMERGENCIES AND FIRST AID The Forest School Leader has up to date first aid training. He/she will always bring a comprehensive first aid kit which will be on hand through out the session. The Forest School leader must be made aware of any relevant medical conditions or special needs of participants before the sessions begin. This information should be included in the original booking form. It is your responsibility to ensure contact detail for the participants are logged and readily to hand. The Forest School Leader will check that there is a mobile phone signal at the site. RISK ASSESSMENTS The Forest School leader will undertake an initial site risk assessment. This assessment will be shared with you before taking the group out into the woods and will detail how hazards are to be managed. Subsequently, the Forest School leader will undertake a daily risk assessment before each session begins.

5 Forest School activities have individual risk assessments which are available for scrutiny if required. The children will take part in ongoing discussions about potential hazards to and will be encouraged to suggest ways of reducing those risks. If there are individuals in your group who pose a hazard to themselves or others you must inform the forest school leader and ensure risk assessments are in place for them. If you have any concerns over safety, please make the Forest School leader aware of these. We cannot have eyes and ears everywhere and we welcome your insight. RESOURCES AND EQUIPMENT CLOTHING It is important that participants have the correct clothing for being outside. Please ensure parents are aware that their child will need; Closed toed footwear (no flipflops, sandals, clogs). In wet weather foot wear should also be waterproof wellies! Water proof jackets and trousers. Scarf, hat, gloves, warm socks etc in cold weather Sun hat, sun-cream in warm weather Long sleeved top and trousers should always be worn whatever the temperature. This is to minimise stings and cuts and insect bites. TOOLS The Forest School leader will bring a tool bag to each of the sessions and may introduce using specific tools, such as secateurs and saws, with the children. There are rules and routines associated with tool use in Forest School. Everyone is expected to follow these guidelines, regardless of their own experience and/or expertise in everyday life. You must not use any of the tools without the permission of the Forest School Leader.

6 TOOL USE Ask permission of the Forest School leader before using any tool Check the tool is in good working order before allowing children to use it Wear a glove on your non-working hand (i.e. your left hand if you are right handed) Ensure the child is also wearing an appropriate sized glove on their non-working hand. Work with the tool at a safe distance from all other people in the woods. Stop working if people come within the safety margin and explain why they should move away. (The safety margin is generally said to be an arm s length plus the length of the tool.) Ensure both yourself and the child are in a stable and comfortable position for working safely with the tool. Put the tool away immediately after use. SHELTER It is great fun to make dens and shelters. The Forest School leader may bring tarpaulins to the site which you can use, with the children, to make tents, tepees or use as ground cover. The children may also wish to make shelters from logs and branches. You can help by testing the stability of the shelter and suggesting ways of strengthening their structure. Logs should not be used above head height unless secured by an adult. If you have any doubts about the safety of a structure ask for help from the Forest School leader. FIRE At times we will have a fire. The Forest School leader will ensure that safety procedures are followed. These include: Log seating a safe distance from the fire. Children will have practised walking around the log circle, not across the fire pit, before the first fire is lit. Children are only allowed to approach the fire when invited to by an adult. Only the Forest School leader or designated adult will place wood on the fire Fire blanket and bucket of water will be readily available in case of emergencies. SITE MANAGEMENT It is important that we leave as little damage at the site as possible. It is part of the Forest School teaching that the children become aware of the impact their activities are having and to think of ways of mitigating and managing this. Every site will have different considerations but in general we encourage the following; We leave nothing behind so all tarpaulins etc are removed at the end of each session. We are careful about picking flowers and leaves there is an obvious safety aspect here, as well as the environmental impact. Children will be allowed to pick some plants but this will be during supervised activities such as the art and craft activities.

7 The fire pit is tidied up before leaving. Small insects and bugs are handled gently with a twig and/or paint brush. If digging becomes popular we will designate a digging area in the wood. Regular checks and discussion will take place about the impact we are having and our activities will adapt accordingly e.g. we may need to leave an area if there are nesting birds. CANCELLATION Essex Wildlife Trust will cancel sessions if the weather makes it dangerous to enter the woods, for example, strong winds or electric storm. The Forest School leader will make the decision to cancel on the basis of weather forecast and observation of the conditions. We will endeavour to inform you in good time of any cancellations and you will not be asked for a donation toward any cancelled session. Instead we will try to re-schedule the session.
