2 What can I expect after my procedure? Bruising and swelling around the area. Numbness Continue to use a dressing. What should I do with my dressing? No dressing is needed. Leave your incision (cut) open to air. Keep your dressing(s) dry for 1 week. Do not remove your dressing. You can put on more tape or gauze on top, if needed. You need to change your dressing every day: 1. Wash your hands well with soap and water. 2. Take two 4x4 gauze pads and cut a hole cut in the middle. Put one on top of the other and place them over your incision. 3. Re-apply cup over your nipple. 4. Place another 4 x 4 gauze pad on top of the cup. 5. Use tape to keep the dressing in place. 6. Do steps 1 to 5 every day, for 4 to 6 weeks. If you had a naso-forehead flap: 1. Wash your hands well with soap and water. 2. Put a piece of Jelonet dressing on your forehead incision. Then put a piece of dry gauze on top. 2
3 How do I care for my incision and sutures? Keep your incision dry for 2 days. Put on Polysporin ointment 3 times a day for no more than 5 days. Wash your hands well with soap and water each time you apply the ointment. Keep your incision protected from direct sunlight for a few months. Scar tissue is sensitive to sunrays and can make it darker than normal. If your incision starts to bleed: Press down on the incision with gauze for 15 minutes to stop the bleeding. If it does not stop, go to your nearest hospital emergency room right away. Please call us or go to your nearest hospital emergency room if you have any: bleeding swelling pain fever (temperature of 38 C or higher) 3
4 Special instructions about my procedure If you had a leg skin graft: Rest in bed for 3 days and keep your affected leg raised up on pillows. This will help with the the bleeding and swelling. Apply eye drops to your affected eye, as prescribed by your doctor, every 4 hours or more. Always wash your hands well with soap and water before putting in the drops. If you have had a nipple reconstruction: Do not wear a tight bra or tight clothing over your reconstructed nipple. Your sutures need to be removed in 10 days. Please make sure you have a clinic appointment. If you had a tattoo: Expect some oozing (leaking fluid) from the tattoo site. This is normal and it will dry up on its own. Do not change the dressing for at least 7 days. After this, you can remove the dressing, wash and keep the area clean and dry. If the dressing starts to smell, you can change the gauze and then secure with tape. Do not peel off the scab. Allow it to fall off on its own. What can I eat and drink? You may eat and drink as you usually do. What medicine should I take? If you have pain, you can take Tylenol Regular or Tylenol Extra Strength or Advil. If you are taking ASA (aspirin) regularly talk to your doctor to find out if you can take this with another pain pill. 4
5 What other activities can I do? You can shower and wash your incision using mild soap and water. You can take a shower. Your dressing is water-proof. What activities should I not do? Do not lift objects heavier than 5 kilograms (10 pounds). Do fewer activities than usual so you don t have too much pain and bleeding from your graft sites. Do not take long walks. My follow-up appointment Call for follow up appointment in weeks. Dr.Stefan Hofer Dr.Anne O Neill Dr.Toni Zhong Who can I call if I have questions? Ask to speak to the clinic nurse. Phone: extension 8767 or
