Balliol College proposes to appoint a Career Development Fellow (CDF) in Spanish. This is a full-time fixed-term, non-renewable post available for the period 1 st October 2017 to 30 th September 2021, the first three terms of which will be probationary. 2. The post is intended to provide opportunities for an excellent early career academic to develop teaching and research skills, and also to gain experience in administrative tasks. 3. Tutorial Fellows in Modern Languages at Balliol College are Sophie Marnette and Elena Lombardi. For further information, see the webpages on Balliol Modern Languages and lists of Fellows and Lecturers at Duties of the post The post will provide the successful candidate with supported experience across a wide range of academic duties. Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. The duties of the Fellowship will involve a substantial element of teaching and research as well
2 as some administrative duties. While the post is a College-only appointment, opportunities to link with the Oxford Spanish Faculty will be presented. 1. College teaching The CDF will take responsibility for the organization, supervision and teaching of Spanish undergraduates in college. They will give tutorials to first-year students on the full range of topics and authors required by the Prelims syllabus, and to FHS students in the areas of his or her expertise, as well as language classes (i.e. translation into and out of Spanish) at first-, second-, and fourth-year level. The CDF will also take responsibility for monitoring and offering academic advice to Modern Languages undergraduates who study Spanish at Balliol (including the year-abroad). Balliol admits up to 4 students a year for Single Honours and up to 4 in the joint schools with Classics, English, History, Linguistics and Philosophy. The CDF will be required to undertake six weighted hours of Spanish teaching per week in tutorials and classes, averaged over three eight-week terms (weighting implies a reduction of contact hours for teaching in larger groups, so actual hours may be slightly lower than six). College administration The CDF will be required to undertake other normal duties for a college, which include: assessing and interviewing in the annual admissions exercise for the selection of new undergraduates, submitting termly student reports, attending report meetings with students, setting and marking Collections (internal College examinations) at the start of term, and helping co-ordinate Spanish in the College with other tutors (including for the year-abroad). They will share responsibility for undergraduate students in Modern Languages and its joint schools, attending termly meetings of Tutorial Board and when necessary meetings on individual student cases, and will act as college adviser for graduate students in relevant subjects. They will participate in the assessment of graduate applications in Modern Languages, in the College s Open Days for prospective students, and other outreach events as requested. Opportunities may arise for the CDF to take part in the wider administration of the College, for instance by serving on one of its committees. 3. Research The CDF should engage in academic research, leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, edited collections, or a monograph. Selection criteria Candidates must normally have: 1. Received the degree of PhD or equivalent by 1 st October 2017, and should not have completed a PhD or equivalent earlier than 1 October 2012 (with the exception of
3 career breaks, e.g. for maternity / paternity leave). Candidates will not normally be considered who have already held a comparable career development appointment (such as a stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship or Career Development Fellowship, or a Fellowship in association with a Leverhulme, Royal Society or British Academy postdoctoral fellowship), at Oxford or another university. 2. A high level of academic achievement, appropriate to the stage of the candidate s career, with evidence of, and potential for, producing distinguished research in the field of Spanish studies. 3. The ability, or the potential, to provide excellent tutorial and small group teaching in a range of undergraduate topics. Experience of teaching would be a strong advantage. 4. An understanding of the learning needs of high achieving undergraduate students and a commitment to supporting and inspiring academic excellence in all students. 5. The organisational skills and motivation to undertake College administration, including setting and marking of examinations. 6. Excellent communication and presentation skills and the sensitivity to deal with pastoral duties. 7. An informed interest in the full range of academic duties of the post and in progressing to an academic post, whether at Oxford or elsewhere. 8. Evidence of commitment to the candidate s own professional development. Professional and career development 1. The post will provide a carefully structured and mentored work and training opportunity for an exceptional candidate embarking on an academic career in Modern Languages, and is intended to provide opportunities for an excellent early career academic to develop teaching and research skills, and also to gain experience in administrative tasks. 2. A mentor for the CDF will be appointed from amongst the senior, permanent academic staff of the College and/or the Sub-Faculty of Spanish. The mentor will provide advice and guidance to the post-holder on the direction and focus of her or his research, on lecturing skills, on tutorial teaching, and on relevant College practices. The mentor will also be in a position to provide advice to the Fellow at the stage when they are applying for permanent academic posts. 3. The CDF will be offered a package of professional development. Soon after taking up the appointment, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to meet with a professional development adviser from the University's Oxford Learning Institute, which has a well-developed programme of courses for academic and research staff.
4 The CDF will also be expected to undertake the University's Introduction to Academic Practice at Oxford, which will take place in September 2017 (see 4. The CDF will also have access to career development advice from the University Careers Service, including one-to-one sessions with a Careers Adviser specializing in the career needs of academic and research staff, career planning and interview skills workshops, and access to information resources. Pay and benefits 1. The CDF will be appointed on Grade 7 of the Oxford salary scale, at point 1 ( 31,076), rising after successful completion of probation by one point annually to point 4 (currently 33,943) in year 4, and will have the option of becoming or remaining a member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). 2. College Benefits: the CDF will be offered single accommodation in College if it is available, for which a modest rent will be charged. 3. A teaching room (which may be shared) will be provided. 4. The CDF will be a full Member of the Senior Common Room and will be entitled to full dining rights at the College whenever the kitchens are open. (While most dietary requirements can be accommodated, additional needs cannot be guaranteed to be met.) 5. The CDF will be entitled to claim research expenses up to 865 p. a. (reimbursed on the basis of receipts submitted to the Senior Tutor). 6. The College has a contributory private Medical Insurance arrangement which the successful applicant may join. 7. The College follows University guidelines for parental leave, and arrangements can be made for shared parental leave. 8. A CDF with parenting responsibilities for a pre-school child or children will be entitled to apply to Balliol s Day Nursery (Ofsted Outstanding ). The University has four subsidised nurseries and also subsidises places at some local nurseries, although at present there is a waiting list. Terms and conditions 1. The CDF will be wholly employed by Balliol College. 2. This is a fixed-term, non-renewable post for the period 1st October 2017 to 30th September 2021, with an initial probationary period.
5 3. The successful candidate will be elected to a Supernumerary Fellowship at Balliol College for an initial period of three terms. Following successful completion of probation, on the basis of a written report submitted in the third term and review by the College s Academic Committee, the CDF will be confirmed in post and re-elected to a Supernumerary Fellowship until 30 September Appointment will also be subject to provision of proof of the right to work in the UK. Applicants who would need work visas if appointed to the post are asked to note that under the UK s points-based migration system they will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient points, and in particular that: (a) they have sufficient English language skills (evidenced by having passed a test in basic English, or coming from a majority English-speaking country, or having taken a degree taught in English); and (b) they have sufficient funds to maintain themselves and any dependents until they receive their first salary payment.
