3 A National Model for Social Work Licensing O No Exceptions: Everyone must be licensed to practice social work O This includes bachelor and master level social workers O Two designations for MSW O O macro clinical O All direct practice requires a clinical license

4 To Get Licensed or Not to? O Moving out of state O Work hours obtained out-of-state under the supervision of an Licensed MSW can count O Not planning to do traditional social work for a while O May want to consider getting your limited license to take the exam O Planning to get your MSW right away O Student interns pursuing a master s degree in social work who are not a licensed or limited licensed bachelor-level social worker must be directly supervised through face-to-face contacts with the supervising fully-licensed master s social worker during assessments and therapy sessions with recipients of services. 6 Limited License Master s Social Worker Qualifications: O Complete MSW from a CSWE accredited School of Social Work O Complete approved background check O Complete application and pay fee O A limited license shall be issued for 1 year and may be renewed for not more than 6 years

7 Licensed Master s Social Worker Qualifications: O O O O O 4,000 hours of supervised experience in either clinical or macro practice over a two year period 100 hours of supervision from a Licensed Master s Social Worker in their area of practice which may be a combination of individual and group (4 hours a month) O 4 hours per month with at least 1 hour being conducted between the applicant and the supervisor on an individual basis Verification and recommendation from LMSW supervisor Clinical must pass the Clinical Social Work Exam (ASWB) Macro must pass the Advanced Generalist Exam (ASWB)

8 Licensed Master s Social Worker Getting BOTH Qualifications for Macro and Clinical: O After completing the requirements in one area of practice (macro or clinical) and getting licensed O Complete additional 2,000 hours of experience under LMSW supervision O 50 hours of supervision by a Licensed Master s Social Worker in that area of practice O Additional testing is NOT required 8

Information can not be saved 13

19 Criminal Background Check O Schedule an appointment O Can be done through Identogo or another agency listed at O You can register for an appointment with Identogo at or call O Use Agency ID/ORI Number 90912K O Complete the Livescan Fingerprint Request Form (regardless of the agency you choose) 3/11/

O Bring Livescan form and Driver s License to the appointment O Notification of your criminal background will be sent by the agency to the Health Professions Licensing Division O Do not mail your receipt to the state of Michigan or contact them prior to 30 days O Cost is $62.75 and can be paid prior 3/11/

24 Overview of the Process Step 1-Application & Check Mailed Step 2-Fingerprinting & Criminal Background Check (7-10 days after the application) Step 3-Official Transcript Request in Banner Track your file by checking the online checklist at -customer number and instructions will be receive approximately 3 weeks after receipt of your application.

25 Are you Licensed? O You should receive a license in the mail but you can always stalk the states license verification page O This page is also useful to look up other licensed social workers and see if they have the kind (clinical or macro) of license you are seeking 3/11/

27 When can you take the exam? O Once you have your Limited License, RIGHT AWAY!! O LLBSWs may wait if you are going back to school for an MSW within 2 years O The State of Michigan send information to ASWB indicating that you are eligible to take the exam O Then YOU REGISTER with ASWB at and you will receive Authorization to Test and instructions on how to schedule your exam (Once you get Authorization, you need to take the exam within one year) 27

O Register for the appropriate ASWB examination O Associate, O Bachelors, O Masters, O Advanced Generalist (Macro exam for Michigan) O Or Clinical (Clinical exam for Michigan) --Candidate handbook available here FOR FREE O O Exams are given year round Multiple versions of the test are given throughout the year and at any given site 3/11/

29 Exam Cost and Passing O The current cost of the exam is Bachelor s exam registration: $230 Advanced Generalist or Clinical exam registration: $260 O A passing score is 75 O If you don t pass the first time you can retake the exam. 3/11/

30 How do I prepare for the exam? O The good news is that you have learned what you need to know in class. O You still need to know test taking strategies O Purchase exam prep materials and/or take an exam prep class O Develop a study plan and/or form a study group O According to the ASWB site no content from the DSM 5 will appear on the exam until July

O Once you begin employment, use the Supervision Verification form (from the application packet) O Discuss supervision requirements for licensure O For each place of employment, you will need a form O LLBSW AND LLMSW must be supervised by a LMSW O Volunteer hours can count toward supervision work
