Open Standards in Supply Chain Traceability Patrik Jonasson, Director Public Policy, GS1 15 April 2015
GS1 is the most widely used supply chain standards in the world 150 countries 15 million products 2 million member companies 6 billion daily transactions 2
GS1 Product Identification Codes Universally recognized barcodes are found on virtually every consumer product in the world The barcode and the encoded Product Identification code is a key which provides a unique, international and non ambiguous identification 3
Capturing the identification key and beyond Some data carriers can carry more detailed information about a specific unit Item identifier Expiry date (21)123 Batch number Serial number 4
How standards make traceability work 5
GS1 partnerships and engagement with other global and regional bodies Global Recalls portal launched on 19 October 2012 We are pleased to enhance our collaboration with the GS1 organisation in our mission to improve consumer safety globally. OECD Deputy Secretary-General RintaroTamaki GS1 provided research support and expertise for the EU Product Traceability Expert Group [ ] the use of standardized codes will enable information about goods to be shared across all economies, permitting APEC customs agencies to address safety recalls and illegal trade APEC Outcomes and Outlooks GS1 is an ISO Approved Referenced Specification Originator Organization (ARO) and ISO Issuing Agency Codes. GS1 is an NGO GS1 has been granted Special consultative status by ECOSOC, the United Nations Economic and Social Council. MoU GS1 & WCO Customs capacity to fight counterfeits strengthened by WCO/GS1 cooperation agreement. Collaboration with GFSI Promoting global safety standards to enable consumer safety. Veronique D Buhot speaking at the GS1 Global event Feb 2015 Registry for farms under discussion.
GS1 Standards in Traceability and Supply Chain Integrity Global Best Practice in Track & Trace GS1 [Country]
GS1 Approach to the Supply Chain Challenge GS1 s global identification system includes globally unique identification for products, assets and locations as well as standards for capturing and sharing visibility and traceability data between supply chain partners and other stakeholders Globally unique identification for products Electronic Purchase Order or Invoice Seller: Buyer: Contents: 10 units GTIN Same numbering system used worldwide by all manufacturers, all retailers Globally unique identification for legal entities and locations 8
GS1 Provides Best Practices to meet Multiple Requirements WHAT HOW Interoperability Enabling automation Full chain traceability And others 9
Regulatory Dimension Regulatory requirements for full chain traceability/recall is becoming more common Requiring one-up one-down traceability Enabled by unambiguous product identification EU has strict regulations for specific high-risk products such as toys (potentially being broadened) US requiring stricter requirements on imported food through Foreign Supplier Verification Programs implementation Asia-Pacific is increasingly requiring stricter food traceability in recent laws in countries like China and the Philippines GS1 [Country]
11 WHERE GS1 HELPS TODAY By standardizing the identification of all Products, Assets and Locations to facilitate improved traceability By improving traceability, we enhance the ability to accurately identify unsafe goods and then execute very specific and targeted recalls By facilitating the authentication of genuine products we help to reduce the risk of harm caused by counterfeit goods
What is needed to address the supply chain challenge To be effective across the multi tier supply chain it is vital that all parties have a common globally unique object identification and data sharing standard which can be easily managed within their internal systems and with their trading partners Part of the answer is enhanced supply chain visibility with improved traceability and transparency along the entire supply chain and with solutions that are based on open, interoperable global standards that facilitate widespread cost effective deployment 12
The supply chain challenge cooperation is needed No single method can guarantee the identity and authenticity of physical objects across industries However unique object identification as foundational level of identification standards is ideally suited to supporting solutions which are needed to secure supply chains 13
Safe and Secure Supply Chain Framework SAFE AND SECURE SUPPLY CHAIN AUTHENTICATION IS THE OBJECT GENUINE? PEDIGREE IS THE CHAIN OF CUSTODY INTACT? OBJECT IDENTITY IS THE OBJECT IDENTIFIER VALID? OBJECT AUTHENTICATION TRACK TRACE DOES THE OBJECT HAVE THE EXPECTED COVERT AND/OR OVERT SECURITY FEATURES? WHERE IS THE OBJECT AND WHERE IS IT HEADED? WHERE WAS THE OBJECT? (LOCATION AND CUSTODIANS) 14
Recent Developments in Asia-Pacific 15
Mi-Trace Traceability System Frozen Durian Industry Market Demand For ,000 tons export globally * Worth US $210.9 mil 16
Mi-Trace Traceability System Developed by MIMOS and uses GS1 Standards to access the product information Objectives of Mi-Trace: - ensure traceability from farm to fork; - authenticate that the frozen packed Musang King Durian fruit is from Malaysia - ensure quality and integrity of the exported fruits; - Integration with other certification systems is possible: 17
Mi-Trace Traceability System Durian Traceability Process Flow 18
APEC Supply Chain Connectivity GS1 working with APEC Governments to implement operational system using industry supply chain standards, supporting: Cross border traceability Full supply chain visibility Strengthened risk management at borders Enabling border protection agencies to reuse admission data, use industry master data and industry visibility frameworks for domestic consumer safety benefits 19
APEC Leaders & Ministers Meetings November 2014 Endorsement in the Leaders Declaration and in the Ministers Statement with official support for pilot projects
APEC endorsement supports use of standardized business data APEC sees clear value for customs and other Government control and surveillance functions to carry out safety recalls and to curb illegal trade 21
