1 Agilent N1016A-K99 Stressed Eye Test Set Repeatable, adjustable, IEEE 802.3ae optical compliance testing The N1016A-K99 is a unique optical solution for the design, verification and manufacturing of 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules and linecards. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet methodology for measuring receiver impairment tolerance is designed to verify that a receiver is capable of operating at a BER of better than 1x when presented with the worst case realworld signal. The methodology is very elaborate, effectively measuring more than just jitter. Called the stressed receiver conformance test, as described in the recently ratified IEEE Standard 802.3ae, the methodology requires an eye impairment that includes: sinusoidal jitter inter-symbol interference sinusoidal interference and attenuation The Agilent N1016A-K99 Stressed eye test set overcomes these difficulties by enabling the generation of an 802.3ae compliant optical stressed eye. As part of a complete system, the N1016A-K99 is designed to provide a stable, calibrated impaired eye. Beyond compliance, the N1016A-K99 allows for adjustability of the level of stress, providing the design or verification engineer the ability to determine the breaking point of the receiver, or to determine where and how a particular device is failing. Referred to as the stressed eye, this concept is relatively straightforward, however, construction of the stressed eye can prove to be difficult. Insufficient stress can allow weak receivers to appear compliant, while excessive stress might result in potentially good receivers appearing to be non-compliant. 2 The N1016A-K99 is designed for compliance at Gb/s, with a 1310 nm transmitter. The N1016A-K99 leverages Agilent s expertise in instrument grade optics and high-speed digital design. Agilent has developed the techniques and technology to ensure that the optical performance remains stable and repeatable over temperature and time. This means that the stress will remain constant from module to module, and test system to test system, providing confidence in data collection and analysis. Stressed eye calibration Figure 1 shows a complete stressed eye test system. The 71501D provides the required levels of sinusoidal jitter, the E4422B provides the sinusoidal interfering signal, and the inter-symbol interference is added by switching in a filter in the N1016A K99. In order to ensure that the stress levels attained are compliant to the standard, a step-by-step process to set and calibrate the sinusoidal jitter, inter-symbol interference (ISI) and sinusoidal interference level is described in the N1016A-K99 manual. A calibration program, supplied on CD with the system controls the digital communications analyzer (DCA) during calibration. The program automates the DCA s measurement and calculation of vertical eye-closure penalty (VECP), optical modulation amplitude (OMA), jitter, and extinction ratio during calibration. Once compliant testing is completed, the elements of the stressed eye can be changed, whether the required level is above or below the level defined by the standard. This adjustability is possible with all of the elements of the stressed eye. As for example, the ISI can be switched in and out. The amplitude for the sinusoidal jitter can be stepped up in search mode to determine the robustness of the device under test. The attenuation and sinusoidal interference can also be adjusted. The N1016A-K99 may also be used as an instrument grade 1310 nm reference transmitter in a transmission and dispersion penalty test system as shown in Figure 2. Figure 1.
