Cyrus Alexander planted the first grapes in the area in 1846 and grape growing later became abundant in the area. Grape growing flourished until Prohibition and the great depression took their toll. Hops, prunes, pears and walnuts were more common than vineyard plantings until well into the 1970 s when the modern renaissance of grape growing began the transformation from a farming region to a premium wine grape growing appellation of world class status.
