2 Botswana at a Glance At the centre of Southern Africa & SADC region With a population size of about 2 million Liberalised & free market economy No restrictions on business ownership; encourage JVPs Botswana rated favourably by various international institutions, due to factors such as competitive mining laws, low sovereign and social risks Most transparent country in Africa; zero tolerance for corruption 2

3 Botswana has extensive, and largely unexploited, coal resources which when developed can form part of the Government s effort to diversify the economy. Known coal resources in Botswana are of the order of 212 billion tonnes Current coal mine (Morupule Colliery) expanded to produce about 3.0 million tonnes per annum is insignificant in comparison to these resources endowment The demand for coal-for-energy has increased significantly nationally, regionally and internationally There is also potential to produce coal based products from Botswana coal 3

4 Domestic power Using coal to generate electricity for domestic consumption; Export power Using coal to generate electricity for exports to other SADC countries; Coal exports Exporting coal into the regional and seaborne market; 4

5 Botswana constructing a 4 x 150 MW (600 MW in total) being commissioned. Two units are complete and the other two under going defects and rectification. Recently floated further generation capacities as follows; 300 MW IPP on a brownfield site in 2016/17 (closed in June 2013) 300 MW IPP from greenfield sites in 2019/20 (still open till 2 nd November 2013) 5

9 Coal Export Trans Kalahari Rail & Port Development and operation of a heavy haul rail from the eastern part of Botswana traversing the Kalahari and Namib Deserts to the Atlantic ocean seaport of Walvis Bay The Rail shall cover a distance of approximately 1500km terminating at a 4 x 4 km coal terminal situated about 10 km in-land The terminal will be linked through a conveyor belt loading berths approximately 1km offshore. Ponta Techobanine Project Development and operation of a heavy haul rail from the eastern part of Botswana traversing Zimbabwe through t o d e e p s e a p o r t o f Techobanine in Mozambique The Rail shall cover a distance of approximately 1400km terminating at a coal terminal on the Indian Ocean coast in Mozambique 9

10 Routes Development Discussions to enter into implementation agreements to facilitate the private sector ongoing with; Namibia on the Trans Kalahari Railway Line Zimbabwe and Mozambique on the Ponta Techobanine Project 10

11 Key transport routes in Sub Saharan Africa and within Southern Africa pass through Botswana provides links to the south & north, to the east & west gives access to greater markets in Africa and access population of about 250 million people 11

12 Kazungula Rail- Road Bridge Project (cont d) The Governments of Botswana and Zambia have agreed to promote free and unobstructed movement of both cargo and people between the two countries by providing an appropriate bridge structure across the Zambezi River at the Kazungula border between the two countries. 12

13 Planned Kazungula Bridge Links Botswana to the north(zambia, DRC, Malawi, Tanzania) across Zambezi River. Governments of Botswana & Zambia jointly financing the project. Project consultants has been engaged Pre- qualificaoon of contractors on going - closes end of September ConstrucOon April Cost esomate US$300 m. Governments to outsource operaoons of the bridge with tolling system. 13

14 Kazungula Rail- Road Bridge Project (cont d) The development of the Kazungula Bridge will eliminate reliance on the existing Kazungula ferry which causes a major bottleneck to the flow of traffic. Presently, transport operations along the regional North- South Corridor are severely disrupted with trucks queuing for several days at the ferry crossing point. In addition to improving the flow of traffic along the North-South Corridor route, the Bridge will provide a much safer means of crossing the River. 14

15 Mosetse Kazungula Railway Line Route- follows the alignment of the A3 Road from Mosetse to Nata and the Nata - Kazungula highway. M- K link is 367 km 22 bridges & 17 level crossings Cape Gauge scenario The nearest link to Zambian railway line is 60km to Livingstone 15

17 Water Infrastructure Strategic infrastructure development strategy is meant to facilitate wise/conjunctive use of both surface and ground water resources which entails Surface water must be used preferentially to groundwater wherever possible even if this means higher water costs. The planning,design and construction of major water infrastructure; Dams Under Construction: Dikgatlhong (400 MCM, complete) Thune (90 MCM, 2013), Lotsane (42 MCM,complete). Strategic Pipelines: North South Carrier (NSC2) and Chobe- Zambezi transfer schemes 17

19 Water Infrastructure Transfer Schemes 19 NSC1 presently supplies 18Mm3/a and will supply 36 Mm3/a with PS4.1 Pump station upgrade NSC 2 will run parallel to NSC1 with an average of 1.1m diameter steel pipe of about 400 km in length supplying 32Mm3/a. NSC 2 phase 1 under construction at a cost of P1.4 billion NSC 2 phase 2 to be constructed at an estimated cost of P4 billion by 2020
