9 Definitions The coral snake is a small, nocturnal snake that is dangerously venomous. It eats small lizards, snakes, and reptiles and lays eggs in the summer. It spends most of its time hiding in cracks. Crocodiles are large, shy reptiles with long triangular teeth, long tails and webbed feet. They live on the coasts in estuaries and swamps and eat fish and other animals near their habitats. Alligators have a wide, U-shaped snout with sharp teeth. The long tail helps propel them though the water and is used as a weapon. They generate body heat by sunbathing in swamps and marshes. Box turtles have a domed shell which closes to protect the turtle from predators. They are omnivores who live in woodlands, and have been badly affected by habitat destruction. Komodo dragons are meateating predators that are active during the day. They are the world s biggest lizards and live in hot and humid Indonesia. They also climb, swim, and run quickly. Iguanas are large lizards found in tropical forests, deserts, and even on the coast. Different species are varied and very adaptable, but most are herbivores with earth-toned coloration. Sea turtles are found in shallow coastal waters and migrate along the coasts. They have a large greenish shell with flippers for swimming. Sea turtles cannot retract their head or flippers. Chameleon lizards can change their color with temperature, light, and emotional changes. They have a long tail, a helmetlike head, and long, sticky tongues that catch insects. Green anoles are tree lizards found in the southeastern United States. They can change colors with temperature, surroundings, or emotional changes. Their tails can regenerate if cut off. Garter snakes are sometimes called garden snakes and are harmless to humans. They are found all over North America and have a pattern of longitudinal stripes that vary in color.

They can run on their back legs. Terrapins are turtles that live in fresh water. They have webbed feet and thin shells. Most have diamond-shaped designs on their shells and live in North America and Britain. The tortoise is a land turtle that varies in size. It is reclusive and can retract into its thick shell in order to hide. It can live up to 150 years and symbolizes longevity in Chinese culture. Pythons are snakes that continue to grow every year that they live. They are carnivores that kill their prey by constricting it. They have a distinctive V shape on their head, and tan and brown scales. Cobras are venomous snakes that live in savannas, woodlands, and rocky hillsides in Asia and Africa. They search for their prey at dawn and dusk, and can go days between meals. Gharials are long crocodile-like reptiles with a narrow snout. It s nice to let children see some real reptiles when doing this work, so try to schedule a field trip to a zoo or pet shop. Or, you can use books or online resources. When a child finishes this work, it would be nice for them to draw one of these animals or sculpt it with clay.
