1 Employability Guide for Students
2 The Employability Service We are here to help and support you throughout your time with us. Our Faculty Employability Advisers will give you the chance to build and develop skills through workshops, careers fairs and employer events. They will guide you through finding and securing work experience, introduce you to employers and help you secure a graduate job once you finish your degree. Employability drop in sessions run daily for any questions you have and you can come along to a CV Surgery for help with your job applications. If you aren t sure which career path is right for you, get in touch with our Careers Advisers. They provide online support, group sessions, phone and one-to-one appointments. To find out more or to contact a Faculty Employability Adviser or Careers Adviser please employability@anglia.ac.uk Employability - what is it? Employability is a measure of how easily new graduates can gain employment and achieve success in the world of work. Potential employers will look at all your achievements and experiences when considering you for employment, so make sure you develop your transferable skills and get some practical experience to make yourself more employable. The Employment Bureau A great way to get some practical experience is to find some part time temporary work to fit around your studies. Register with the Employment Bureau to find out about flexible work where you can gain new skills to add to your CV whilst earning some money. The Employment Bureau will also help you find a permanent position once you ve graduated. Register at eb.anglia.ac.uk Why is it important? A degree is no longer enough to secure a job 1 employers are looking for graduates who can prove they have good communication skills, advanced digital literacy and strong team-working abilities, as well as relevant work experience. With a huge number of applicants competing for the same role, you need to make sure you stand out through your involvements and achievements. 3 Now you re here, get started In your first year... Build up your work experience Register with the Employment Bureau Work experience is a vital part of improving your employability. Develop new skills and earn some extra money through part time temporary work. Register at eb.anglia.ac.uk Find us online Log in to the Employability and Careers Portal where you will find lots of useful resources. Follow the Employability Service and the Employment Bureau on Facebook and Twitter to keep updated on useful information and event reminders. /ARUEmployability /ARUEmploymentBureau eb.anglia.ac.uk Volunteering is a great way to help your community, see a real-life workplace and build your transferable skills. Finding a voluntary role that s enjoyable and relevant to a potential career looks great on your CV. Register with the Students Union Volunteering Service at Meet your Faculty Employability Adviser Our advisers are here to help you find your way around the graduate job market and offer practical advice on things like CV writing and interview technique. Make a point of meeting your Faculty Employability Adviser as soon as possible. They re here to help and have all the latest information on which companies are recruiting in which sectors, so stay in close contact with your adviser to make sure you don t miss out on any opportunities. Start working towards the Anglia Ruskin Employability Programme Log in to the Careers and Employability Portal to find out more and start working towards the Anglia Ruskin Employability Programme. Visit Create a CV to use for part time and vacation work Use your vacations to gain experience, develop new skills and start building up your industry contacts. Volunteering, work experience, placements or internships are all great ways to do this. Get involved 4 with sports and societies Being part of a sports team or society shows dedication, teamwork and commitment things employers love to see. Both are great ways to meet people with similar interests, and if there isn t a society you fancy, you can show initiative and create your own making sure to add this to your CV. 5 In your penultimate year Explore your career options - Attend Employability Service events and workshops There s a wide variety of employability events taking place throughout the year from careers fairs to workshops. These events will help you learn more about opportunities, giving you the chance to find out what professions you might be interested in. Get involved in university projects There are loads of things you can get involved in, for example The Big Pitch where you can pitch your business idea and win money to develop it and many live projects set by employers. Update your CV Your CV is often the first point of contact with a potential employer so it s important to keep it updated with all your new experiences. Attend our CV Surgery and workshops to learn how to adapt your CV to fit the job you re applying for. Meet employers and attend careers fairs Use the on-campus recruitment fairs and employer events to network and meet potential employers. Make a good impression by being prepared and well presented, with a copy of your current CV to hand. Many events are run in conjunction with industry employers so they re a good way to meet potential employers and get crucial information direct from the source. In your final year Prepare your graduate CV and make sure you visit the Employment Bureau Don t forget the Employment Bureau recruits for graduate jobs. It s vital that you register before you leave if you haven t had any part time work and update your details if you ve registered before. Register at eb.anglia.ac.uk Consider postgraduate study or self-employment Have a think about whether you d like to continue your studies or perhaps start your own business after you graduate. Attend our Be Your Own Boss seminars and University Open Days to find out more, or speak to a Careers Adviser to discuss your options. The StartupLab provides dedicated space for students with early-stage business concepts. For more information visit Review your social media profile Employers often search for candidates online so your online profiles need to be professional and current. The Employability team can help you create an impactful LinkedIn account for potential employers to explore. Complete the Anglia Ruskin Employability Programme Finish the Anglia Ruskin Employability Programme before you graduate to add to your portfolio for employers. Join the Anglia Ruskin Mentoring Scheme A mentor will support you, act as a sounding board and offer practical advice and guidance. You can learn a lot about your chosen career by working with a mentor. You ll learn about the working environment and can get your questions answered. Apply for graduate recruitment schemes Graduate schemes often recruit early so be prepared and apply early. 7 8

It helps us to ensure we re providing the best possible support for our students, help prospective students understand the value of a degree from Anglia Ruskin University and provides current students with information on a range of career opportunities.
