2 Prospectus Aim "To provide potential learners, parents/guardians or carers with information about the Jaguar/Land Rover Pre Apprenticeship Programme". The Brands Both Jaguar and Land Rover are global brand names and build some of the best vehicles in the world today. Jaguar Land Rover have over the last 10 years been supportive in delivering industry leading training to advanced apprentices in the year old age bracket with benchmark achievement rates of success for the motor industry sector. These successes have led Jaguar Land Rover to widen its apprenticeships to now include a Pre Apprenticeship Programme in Vehicle Inspection for year old learners. Jaguar Land Rover is the leading manufacturer sponsored by the Government to deliver this vocational qualification which is certified by the Institute of Motor Industry (IMI). The Programme The programme is delivered at Jaguar Land Rover's UK Training facilities at The Academy based in Leamington Spa, or in addition at one of our carefully selected partnership colleges throughout the UK. Qualification Structure: Pre Apprenticeship / Technical Certificate The qualification is a Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Inspection Technical Certificate. A Technical Certificate is a qualification based around both theoretical and practical learning and assessment of specific industry taught programme. Assessment is ongoing throughout the programme duration through practical assessments, external examination testing and phase testing at various points throughout the programme. The full qualification requires each learner to complete work experience in an automotive environment. This is undertaken by the learners during allocated work placement blocks, holidays, weekends or inset days. This undertaking requires a large commitment from both the student and parents/carers, and at interview students will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to this requirement. On successful achievement of both qualifications the learners can achieve the equivalent of 4 GCSE's Grades A*-C awarded on a points basis. YAP PR 001 Page 2 of 5
3 Health & Safety: Each training venue and workshop environment used for practical activities has been assessed for Health & Safety Compliance to Jaguar Land Rover Standards. Each employer engaged within the work experience programme is required to complete a Health & Safety employer Annual Declaration prior to the learners being placed for work experience. Child Protection: Jaguar Land Rover acknowledges it has a responsibility for the safety of children undertaking its young apprentice programme. The Companies also recognise that good child protection policies and procedures are of benefit to everyone involved with the Companies programmes, including staff, and the young persons taking part. Entry Requirements & Initial Selection Process The entry requirements for this Pre Apprenticeship programme are as follows: SAT's Level 5 grades in each of the three core subject areas 90% attendance at school Evidence of acceptable behaviour at school Each applicant will undertake a mechanical assessment, and the required level for the programme must be achieved before entry onto the course. Undertake an Industry Interview Be enthusiastic and willing to learn new life skills The initial selection process will include the above entry requirements supported with an industry interview with Jaguar Land Rover. This selection process will take place at the Jaguar Land Rover Academy in Leamington Spa. Frequently Asked Questions about Pre Apprenticeships (Supplied by the Partnerships) Where have the additional courses come from? As part of the collaborative arrangements being made for the education of students between the ages of fourteen to nineteen, a series of additional vocational courses out side of the school curriculum are now on offer to Year 10. The courses vary in type and level, from additional GCSE courses to a wide range of vocational courses, and they are aimed at students of differing abilities who can most benefit from them. How can I study in school as well as take a course somewhere else? For one full day of every school week students are released from their schools to attend these courses. The courses last for two full school years, throughout Years 10 and 11, and every course offers recognised qualifications that can be used at sixteen to continue further education, training, or employment. On the other four days of the week students will study in school as normal. Will I miss important Subjects at school when I am out? School timetables will be adjusted and in some cases catch up sessions provided so that students who enter into these away courses will be able to receive their full range of Subjects on the four days of the week that will be spent in their home school. Who are these courses for? The courses will be useful to a variety of students, from those who have particular interests in the subjects offered, to those who wish to gain vocational experience, or to those who have particular YAP PR 001 Page 3 of 5
4 careers in mind. School tutors will be able to give advice on whether a particular course is at the right level for the student to consider studying it. Who else will be taking these courses? Students from other schools will learn together and be taught in joint groups. Learning away from school in a different environment will be a new experience for everyone but previous students have readily adapted to the challenge. Current feedback from students suggests that they find the mixed groups both enjoyable and beneficial. How do I get a place on one of these courses? Places are limited on these programmes and it is likely that demand will exceed supply. For this reason it will be of the utmost importance that students who wish to study away from their home school should have a real commitment and enthusiasm for their choice. Students must be prepared to travel independently, sometimes for longer distances; and where attending Jaguar Land Rover Training Facilities be prepared to intermingle in an adult environment. Students and parents should consider these demands carefully in consultation with school staff before making requests to take up one of these places. What will happen before I am taken onto a course? Students will only be taken onto these courses having met the entry requirements and all relevant agreements have been obtained. This will involve consultation between the school, student and parent. In order to enter courses personal student information will need to be passed from school to provider, a series of signed permission letters and forms will need to be completed, and an interview with the course provider/representative will need to take place. The provider will make the final decision in assessing the potential of a student to benefit from one of their courses. Parents should be aware that students attending training with Jaguar Land Rover will be training in facilities that also cater for adult learners. School will follow its normal policies in ensuring students health, safety and care whilst attending courses elsewhere. What happens if I can t get the course of my choice out of school? Students will have had the chance to look at the school-based options that are available to them and to have a made a choice that they would be happy to take in school. If the out of school course is full up it may be that another choice is available. Otherwise an in school choice will be made available. In rare circumstances it may be necessary for a provider to decide to remove a course from the original offer. This would most likely be the case if there were not sufficient numbers of students interested in taking the course to make it a viable or worthwhile experience. In these circumstances we will do our best to keep you informed about any decisions that need to be made. How will I travel to the course that I would like to take? As on a normal school day, it is expected that most students will be able to travel independently to and from out of school courses. Other arrangements may also be considered where this is appropriate. When considering courses and locations available, schools, students and parents need to discuss the demands and responsibilities of travel at the beginning and end of the day. In all cases travel details of how to get there and back will be issued to students. YAP PR 001 Page 4 of 5
5 Will I get the chance to visit the course location before starting? You will get the chance to travel and visit the location as part of the interviewing and induction process for joining one of the new courses. Do I need special equipment to take one of these courses? Any necessary equipment and materials to complete practical aspects of the courses will normally be provided but students will be expected to attend equipped and ready to learn. In those cases where any specialist items are needed, these will be noted in the course descriptions and where extra costs are involved those in need of financial support will be considered under existing policies. When courses involve practical activities in a working environment, students will receive health and safety information and guidance from course leaders. Students will then be expected to be aware in their work and behaviour of potential health and safety risks involved to themselves and others, and to be capable of behaving appropriately under supervision. Will I need to wear uniform if I go somewhere else to study? Where students attend Jaguar Land Rover training facilities school uniform must be worn. Safety boots and overalls must be purchased by the students and worn at all times in the workshop, in compliance with the government health and safety policies. What will be expected of me when I am out of school? The same standards of behaviour that are expected in school will apply to the time you spend on your out of school course. Providers offering out of school courses will also have their own rules and procedures and will give further guidance at the application stage. What do I need to do next? Read all the information carefully about the different courses. Talk your ideas over with your parents, teachers, tutors, and careers advisers. If you think you would like to be considered for one of these places fill out the Statement of Interest Form that accompanies this handout. Remember your tutors must feel able to support your application so listen carefully to their advice. When will I hear if I ve been accepted onto the course? It will take some weeks to consider applications and to carry out interviews. You will be kept informed about these courses inside your ordinary Options choices. We will do our best to ensure that you are right for the course and that the course is right for you. If for any reason a course is not available then you will informed accordingly, and alternative options will be available in school. Providers will write to you to inform you of their decisions.
