1 Job Title: Social Worker - Generic Job Grade: Band 4 Directorate: Job Reference Number: Schools Children and Families P00165 The Role To manage a caseload of service users requiring assessment of their needs, carry out Initial and core assessments and investigations and co-ordinating support packages as necessary. Job Purpose Under the general supervision of a senior practitioner or team manager, to deliver an effective social work service to children and families, which is informed by current research, legislation and policy. Key Accountabilities Liaising and developing close working relationships with other professions and agencies to ensure service users receive services in accordance with assessed needs. Where appropriate, to participate in multi-disciplinary teams and contribute to their effectiveness. To provide emotional and practical support, advice and advocacy to service users and carers as required. Maintaining accurate written and computerised data of intervention in a timely manner. To maintain up to date knowledge of current research, corporate standards, policies and procedures and of current legislation and regulations. To ensure that Looked After Children and children on the Child Protection register are well supported, visited and cared for in accordance with good practice and statutory requirements

2 To participate in the on-going development and training of the team, and the service area. Attending team meetings and sharing ideas and best practice. Preparing for and attending supervision meetings. Participate in the duty rota system, as agreed. Assess the needs and risks for children and identify actions appropriate to meet needs and address risk Ensure child protection and care plans are implemented and reviewed. Follow the Council s child protection procedures. Keep knowledge and practice up to date through training and other professional development opportunities. Any other duties commensurate with the grade that may, from time to time, be required maintaining the requirement s of General Social Care Council. To undertake occasional evening work and be available for very occasional weekend activities as required by the Children and Young People s Service. Ability to maintain clear boundaries with clients and colleagues Required to be mobile throughout an operational area (or throughout Essex or similar where more appropriate) and therefore a valid driving licence and use of car required, unless the role can be undertaken effectively by alternative transport arrangements Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends Be committed to evidence based practice Be contactable by telephone Knowledge, Skills and Experience DipSW, CQSW, CSS or equivalent. GSCC Registration as a Registered Social Worker

3 Skills in Word, Outlook and computerised records data Experience in a Child Care setting. Recent experience of communicating with children of all ages and working in partnership with parents and/or carers. Experience in planning activities and programmes for children, young people and parents. Knowledge of Court work in relation to Child Care matters and have an understanding of the legal process Knowledge of current legislation pertinent to Child Protection (e.g CA1989, CA 2004, Guidance and Regulations, Every Child Matters. Knowledge and understanding of child development theories. Experience in Child protection work, especially Section 47 investigations and assessments. Knowledge of therapeutic methods of working with dysfunctional families and/or families in crisis. Role Requirement: Working with children / vulnerable adults in a specified place or post Pre-Employment Check Self Declaration (Spent and unspent convictions) CRB Enhanced Level (renewed every three years) ISA Registration Regulated (Currently subject to Home Office review) References Definition A declaration of spent and unspent convictions must be completed by employees who work with vulnerable adults or children The CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check will be sought by ECC before a start date is agreed ECC will administer the ISA Register check All posts defined as Regulated or Controlled as outlined in the ISA Regulations will require: At least two employer references one reference is required prior to interview and should ideally be from your current/most recent employer Reference history covering a minimum of five years employment A reference from the last employer where the post gave access to children or vulnerable adults Any gaps of 4 weeks or more will be explored by the manager at interview stage. Where appropriate additional character references will be taken up Medical Eligibility / Right to work in the UK All new recruits and employees whose role changes significantly are required to complete a medical health questionnaire Proof is required and original documentation will be sought i.e. passport or full birth certificate
