1 HEALTH Grade 3 Lesson 2: Compliments and Put-downs Topic: Put-downs and Compliments OBJECTIVE: The students will be able to define put-ups and put-downs, discuss reasons why people give them, and identify strategies for dealing with put-downs. MATERIALS: Put-down worksheet Giving and Receiving Compliments worksheet Compliments/Put-downs worksheet Emotions Poster (faces with different expressions and feeling words) PREPARATION: 1. Compliments/Put-Downs Worksheet 1/student 2. Giving and Receiving Compliments 1/student 3. Put-down worksheet 1/small group VOCABULARY: put-down: anything someone says or does that makes you feel bad put-ups/compliments: anything someone says that makes you feel good PROCEDURE: 1. Define put-ups/compliments and how they make you feel. Define and discuss put-downs as anything someone says or does that makes you feel bad. Point out that the class is full of unique and special people with different personalities, looks, and talents. Discuss compliments (refer to Giving and Receiving Compliments sheet). 2. Discuss how sometimes we are very critical of other people and we concentrate only on the negative things about them. Talk about how people often feel excluded when they are constantly criticized. 3. Divide students into small groups (4-5) and have them complete put-down worksheet (can be done as a role-play or written activity). 4. Reassemble group and share information on put-down worksheets. Discuss with class: How many of you have ever felt this way? What would happen if you heard put-downs like these every day,

2 many times each day? Why do you think people give put-downs? Discuss how jokes or just kidding can hurt people s feelings and be considered put-downs. 5. Ask students what they can do when they get a put-down. Brainstorm ideas on the board. Be sure to include: walk away, ignore, humor, and acknowledge. 6. Discuss how many people may consider something a put-down that you mean as a compliment: Explain that valuing what people do and say can make them feel included and accepted. Discuss how it is healthier and more fun when we include everyone and use all our resources to have the best classroom. Compliments and put-downs can be verbal or non-verbal. WRAP-UP: Try to give honest compliments everyday. Remember the compliments given to you. Hold the good feelings/put-ups as long as you can.
