China Institute Children s Outreach Workshop: How Are You, Mr. Emperor? Pre- and Post- Workshop Materials PRE-WORKSHOP I. Facts About China 1) Geographic Location China belongs to the continent of Asia. Countries on its borders include Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, India, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Vietnam. 2) Cities The capital city is Beijing, in northern China. The most populated city is Shanghai, in southern China, with about 23.9 million people in (New York City has about 8.4 million people.) 3) Time China is usually 12 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. So if it s 8:00 pm in New York, then it is 8:00 am the next morning in Beijing. It takes between 14 and 15 hours to fly directly from New York City to Beijing. II. Facts About the Forbidden City 1) What is the Forbidden City? The Forbidden City was the center of China s imperial empire after the Ming Dynasty emperor, Yongle, relocated his court from Nanjing to Beijing in the early 1400s. It remained the main palace for China s imperial family in the Ming and Qing dynasties, until the last Qing Dynasty emperor, Puyi, abdicated the throne in It was later opened to the general public and is now known as the Palace Museum. 2) When was the Forbidden City built? Construction on the Forbidden City started in 1406 and it officially opened in ) How big is the Forbidden City? The total area, including the city wall and moat, is over 990,000 square meters an area large enough that 140 soccer games could be played there at the same time. There are 980 palatial buildings in the Forbidden City complex with 8,707 rooms. It is the world s largest surviving enclosed palace, the world s largest wooden architectural complex, and the world s largest museum.
4) What does it look like and who lived there? The Forbidden City is divided into two main sections: the Outer Court and the Inner Court. The Outer Court is located on the southern end and it was designed for the public life of the Emperor. This is where court was held, imperial proclamations were delivered, and important ceremonies were conducted. The Inner Court to the north was the residence of the Emperor and his family and contained gardens, studies, and bedrooms. Scholars, civil servants, and military men conducted their business in the Outer Court. Unless given special permission, only eunuchs, palace women, and children were allowed in the Inner Court. Even the Emperor was not allowed in all of the rooms in the palace! Central Part of the Outer Court, Image courtesy of This is the central part of the Outer Court with its three main halls. The Hall of Supreme Harmony was where the most important state ceremonies were held. The Hall of Central Harmony (also called Hall of Middle Harmony) was used by the Emperor to prepare and rest before and during the ceremonies. The Hall of Preserving Harmony located on the last of the three main halls was mainly used for state banquets and for holding the highest-level of the civil service examination. Another set of three halls was located on the central of the palace, which mirror the three main halls of the Outer Court. These halls were the official residences of the Emperor and Empress. On the east and west of the three halls are twelve courtyards where the empress dowagers and imperial consorts lived. Behind the three halls is the Imperial Garden.
The Gate of Heavenly Purity, which separates the Outer Court from the Inner Court, also functioned as the line separating the emperor s private and public affairs. This photograph shows the Gate in front with the three main halls of the Inner Court directly behind it. Pre-Workshop Questions & Activities 1) Locate China on a map. How many countries are along its borders? What oceans and seas are on its borders? Where are its major cities? 2) Why do you think the Emperor s palace is called the Forbidden City? Why was it forbidden? Why is it a city? 3) Emperors were the most powerful people in imperial China. What responsibilities did you think they might have had that made them so powerful? 4) Imagine that you are the Emperor or Empress of China. What would you do with a huge palace like the Forbidden City? Who would you let live there? Why? How would you rule from the palace? POST-WORKSHOP III. Facts About The Emperor 1) The Emperor and His Responsibilities Officially, there were 210 emperors in China from the first emperor of the Qin dynasty, Qin Shi Huang, to the last emperor of the Qing dynasty, Puyi. There was one female emperor, Wu Zetian of the Tang dynasty. Every one of these emperors, especially the ones who founded their own dynasties, did their best to convince
their citizens that they were the true descendants of Heaven. It was thought that Heaven bestowed upon them the power to rule and whoever could claim the title of Son Heaven would have the authority to rule over the people. During the imperial era in China, the emperors were the pivotal characters and symbol of the nation. This entitled them to live in the grandest and most luxurious buildings: the palaces. The Chinese phrase Family and Country refers to an ideal way that a ruler should manage their affairs. What this phrase means is that one must first improve oneself before one can start a happy family. One must then be able to manage a happy family before one can rule an entire nation. Question: Think about what you learned about the layout of the Forbidden City and how it was divided into an Inner Court and an Outer Court. How do you think this idea of Family and Country might be reflected in the design of the Forbidden City? The Emperor ruled the nation and he had the most power. A good ruler brought peace, union, and stability to his people, so that they would have a happy life. Under an incompetent ruler, the people s quality of life would decline. Generally speaking, the founding emperors of dynasties were bright and competent. But the same could not always be said about the emperors who followed. Because of the importance of an emperor to the country, every citizen was filled with high expectations for him. Question & Activity During the Expectation Poster activity, what did your group list about either the emperor s responsibilities or the people s expectations? Pick one important item on your list and write how you would implement it into real life. Question & Activity Imagine that you are the emperor giving a speech to his people. What would you say to them to let them know how you are going to bring them a good life? Imagine that you are a citizen of the Chinese empire writing a letter to the emperor. What would you ask him to do to make sure you have a happy life? 2) An Imperial Prince s Daily Schedule As any of the princes living in the Forbidden City could become the next emperor, they all received a strict and rigorous education. Before sunrise, a prince would wake up and go to school. Classes ran from 5:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon, at least ten hours a day, seven days a week. The five holidays the princes got off were New Year s Day, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Emperor s Birthday, and the prince s own birthday. 4:00 am Rise and shine!
5:00-7:00 am Go to school, practice archery, recite Confucian classics 7:30 am - 12:00 pm Breakfast, study history and Confucian classics 12:00 pm Lunch 12:30-3:00 pm Practice calligraphy, poetry classes, military training Question & Activity Imagine that you are a prince or princess. Create your own daily schedule, listing the types of activities that you think would be important to become a good leader. 3) Dragon Robe and Twelve Emblems These 12 emblems were embroidered on the Emperor s imperial robe, a tradition that was started during the Zhou dynasty ( BC). The traditional rule stated that, as the Son of Heaven, the Emperor had to wear a robe with this design. The 12 emblems represented the most important virtues, or good qualities, contained in the supreme powers held by the Emperor. Grain - People s Well Being Axe - Courage Fire - Honesty Seaweed - Determination Pheasant - Literary Brilliance Fu symbol - Kindness Mountain - Stability Dragon - Grace Under Pressure Sacrificial Cups - Filial Piety Sun - Shine Moon - Shine Stars - Shine Question & Activity 1) Choose one of the symbols and virtues and write about it. Why do you think the image corresponds with the virtue (take a guess, some of them are a little weird)? Why do you think this virtue was important for an emperor? 2) What do you think are important virtues of a good leader? Draw your own dragon robe using the attached drawing with 12 emblems of your own. Next to the dragon robe list your emblems and the virtues they represent.
