2 Welcome to the Torrance Refinery! In 1929 the Torrance Refinery was built by Scottish sea captain John Barneson, who had a vision of fueling ships in the Los Angeles harbor with recently discovered crude oil from California s San Joaquin Valley. In the beginning, the refinery processed 30,000 barrels of crude oil per day. 1

3 Today, the Torrance refinery processes an average of 155,000 barrels of crude oil per day, producing the highest quality gasoline, jet fuel and other products to keep California and the West on the move. 2

4 More than 70 percent of each barrel of crude oil is refined into some of the cleanest gasoline in the world. Other products of the Torrance refining process include jet fuel, diesel fuel, and fuels like those used in gas barbecues. 3

5 Most of Torrance refinery s crude comes from California s San Joaquin Valley. Crude oil is a fossil fuel, meaning that it was made naturally from decaying plants and animals living in ancient seas millions of years ago. Crude oil is a thick, black material that looks like molasses. Can you get the oil from the sea bed to the production unit? 4

6 In addition to making gasoline for cars, oil is used to make other products that we use everyday. See if you can count all of the things we use that are made from oil! 5

7 SAFETY FIRST! Refinery workers protect their hands from injury by wearing safety gloves. Safety glasses are worn to protect the eyes against flying dust and debris. Hearing protection is used to protect workers from loud levels of noise. Clothing worn by refinery employees is specially made for refinery work! Hard hats are worn to protect the head against possible falling objects. Thick, sturdy steel-toed boots are worn to protect the feet against heavy objects. 8 ExxonMobil works hard to ensure we meet strict California environmental rules. Meeting environmental requirements helps ensure the refinery produces the cleanest gasoline in the world. Vehicles using clean gasoline produce less pollution and help decrease the amount of smog in the Los Angeles area. How many cars do you count on the freeway? 7

9 Towers: Refining begins by running crude oil through a distillation tower. Intense heat is used to separate (or distill ) crude oil into different products. Vessels:Various shaped vessels are used to help break (or crack ) heavy molecules into lighter ones and convert materials into products. Hydrotreater: Products from the towers are sent to vessels called hydrotreaters, or large washing machines, where they are cleaned. A hydrotreated fuel causes less pollution when it is used. 8

10 Many pieces of equipment are used to run a refinery! Spheres: Round containers are used to store petroleum gas products. Tanks: Tanks store materials used in the refining process as well as the products made. Exchangers: Exchangers help heat and cool products in the process by exchanging energy. Pipes: Piping connects the whole refinery together so that materials can be moved from one process to another. 9

11 10 Water is used in heat exchangers to cool products. Hot water from the refinery is cooled in a cooling tower and recycled for reuse. Water vapors coming out of the cooling tower sometimes form clouds above the refinery. The first cloud is drawn for you. Can you draw more clouds?

12 Safety flares are an important part of the refining process. Excess materials from the refining process are sent to the flares, where they are burned off. This process helps to minimize emissions into the air. FERDYD HET FALRE Answer: Freddy the Flare 11

13 12 Products made at the Torrance Refinery are tested in our laboratory to ensure that they meet high quality standards. We work hard to make sure our products are clean and pure!

14 Open House gives our neighbors an opportunity to visit the refinery and learn about our operations. This community event includes a day of fun and education focusing on refinery safety efforts and operations. 13

The ExxonMobil Green Team is a summer employment program for Torrance high school students.this program allows students to work at offices in the City of Torrance or the Torrance Unified School District, learning valuable skills throughout the summer! 16 The ExxonMobil Pegasus Award program gives money to Torrance school teachers to use in their classrooms.
