Introduction of Eating Disorders Review of Previous Lesson Teaching Steps Tell: Today we will be talking about eating disorders, which can be a touchy subject for some people. Many people in this room probably have had or have known someone with an eating disorder. Please be respectful of what your classmates share and remember that anything that is said in this room, does not leave this room. Ask and Discuss: What did you cover yesterday in Health class? What are two things that you learned from that lesson? Overview of Today s Lesson and Why it is Important Tell: Like I said earlier, many people experience an eating disorder sometime in their lives. Contrary to what some people believe, an eating disorder is a mental illness. There are many symptoms that can diagnose an eating disorder and also many ways to help you maintain a positive body image. Having an eating disorder can be life-threatening and it is important to seek help if you or anyone you know is struggling with an eating disorder. 2. Anorexia Nervosa Show: Dying to be Thin video clip about the cultural pressures of being thin. Ask: Is there specific cultural pressures to be thin? Are there certain actors or actresses that have popularized eating disorders? Do you want to be like them?

Tell: Now that we have talked a little about what eating disorders are, we are going to talk about the different types of eating disorders. The three types of eating disorders are ANOREXIA NERVOSA, BULIMIA NERVOSA, and BINGE EATING DISORDER. Ask: Does anyone know what anorexia nervosa is and how it can affect your health? Content Bite: Anorexia Nervosa is a disorder in which the irrational fear of becoming overweight results in severe weight loss from self-starvation. Tell: This disorder affects both men and women and usually appears in early to mid adolescence. It is caused by the disordered person having a misconception about their own body. They think they are overweight when they are at or below a healthy weight and. This disorder is purely mental but may cause severe health risks. These health risks can include: Content Bite: Health risks include: abnormally slow heart rate and low blood pressure Reduction of bone density (osteoporosis), which results in dry, brittle bones. Muscle loss and weakness. Severe dehydration, which can result in kidney failure. Fainting, fatigue, and overall weakness. Dry hair and skin, hair loss is common. Growth of a white, downy layer of hair all over the body, including the face, in an effort to keep the body warm. 5-20% of people with anorexia nervosa will die from the disease. Ask: Raise your hand if you have known someone that has had an eating disorder. What were some warning signs or symptoms that person had? Content Bite: Some warning signs and symptoms of anorexia include: Dramatic weight loss. Preoccupation with weight, food, calories, fat grams, and dieting. Refusal to eat certain foods, progressing to restrictions against whole categories of food (e.g. no carbohydrates, etc.). Frequent comments about feeling fat or overweight despite weight loss. Anxiety about gaining weight or being fat. Denial of hunger. Development of food rituals (e.g. eating foods in certain orders, excessive chewing, rearranging food on a plate). Consistent excuses to avoid mealtimes or situations involving food.

Excessive, rigid exercise regimen--despite weather, fatigue, illness, or injury-- the need to burn off calories taken in. Withdrawal from usual friends and activities. In general, behaviors and attitudes indicating that weight loss, dieting, and control of food are becoming primary concerns. Tell: As you can see, anorexia can cause major health risks. People with anorexia have misconceptions about themselves such as seen over on the SMART board. These ads depict what some people with anorexia think of themselves. These ads were found at the National Eating Disorders Association website. If anyone would like more information you can log on to: Show: Ads- Ask: Do these ads get your attention? Do you think they are accurate representations of some adolescent s body image? Note : Students will give various answers. Distribute: Dear Mr. Diet letter worksheet 1/student Tell: Read the following letter. Write an answer to give advice based on what you ve learned about eating disorders. Include 3 facts about eating disorders in your letter. Performance Event: Dear Mr. Diet letter worksheet. Note: Allow students time to work on worksheet. Ask and Discuss: Would anyone like to share their letter with the class? Note: Students will read their letters to the class. Tell: Now we will move onto another eating disorder called bulimia nervosa. 3. Bulimia Nervosa Tell: Bulimia Nervosa is another eating disorder caused by a misconception of ones own body image. Instead of avoiding food or, people with bulimia purge their food, or throw it up after eating it. Many people struggling with bulimia nervosa recognize that their behaviors are unusual and perhaps dangerous to their health but can t do anything to stop themselves.

Ask: Because of excessive vomiting, bulimia nervosa comes with its own set of health consequences. What would be some examples of health consequences associated with bulimia nervosa? Content Bite: Health consequences associated with bulimia nervosa would be: Unusual swelling of the cheeks or jaw area. Calluses on the back of the hands and knuckles from self-induced vomiting. Discoloration or staining of the teeth. Tooth decay, or tooth loss. Damage to stomach and esophagus. Redness around the eyes from excessive straining during vomiting. Creation of complex lifestyle schedules or rituals to make time for binge-andpurge sessions. Ask: What are two things that anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa have in common with each other? Tell: We have talked about two major eating disorders and the health risks associated with them. There is one final disorder we are going to talk about this eating disorder is call binge eating disorder. 4. Binge Eating Disorder Tell: Binge Eating Disorder is a disorder that involves excessive overeating in short periods of time. People with this disorder feel out of control when eating. Binge eating disorder is sometimes associated with clinically obese and carry severe health consequences. Content Bite: Health risks of binge eating include: High blood pressure High cholesterol levels Heart disease Type II Diabetes Gallbladder disease

5. Helping a friend with an eating disorder Ask: If you or a friend has an eating disorder, is it important for that person to be treated so that they can recover from their illness? How can you help your friend get the professional care that he/she needs? Content Bite: People with eating disorders need professional medical and psychological help. Avoid talking about food and weight, those are not the real issues Assure them that they are not alone and that you love them and want to help in any way that you can Encourage them to seek help Never try to force them to eat Do not comment on their weight or appearance Do not blame the individual and do not get angry with them Ask: Do you think that it is important for individuals with eating disorders to get help? Tell: Please get into groups of 5 for our final activity. Distribute: Eating Disorders Scenarios group activity 1/ group. Tell: In your group, read your scenario. Decide which eating disorder the scenario is describing and explain in the space provided, what your group members would say and do for the person with the eating disorder.
