1 Social impact report Dear Donor, We re pleased to send you an update of the impact of your caring donation to our field partner projects. As you ll see in the following report from the field, your giving has had crucial impact, not only materially, but also through the hope your gift has conveyed. W4 partners with small, grassroots organizations. Your generous support is helping our field partners to carry out vital work and reminds the girls and women in our field programs that people around the world care about them and have faith in them. Each of our reports contains all the projects run in a specific country by our field partners. We invite you also to explore the other ongoing projects for this field partner. We re keen to widen our community and invite more people to weave the Women s WorldWide Web. We hope you will be inspired to spread the word about our collaborative adventure with your friends and contacts, by sharing this message and/or sending a free e-card. At W4, we re passionate about creating opportunities for girls and women to build safe, hope-filled futures for themselves, their families and communities. Thank you for joining us in this endeavor. Please don t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Warmest Thanks, The W4 Team 1
2 PHILIPPINES Period: Nov 2012-March 2013 Children of Asia Total beneficiaries: 70 FOCUS: EDUCATION, HEALTH N BENEFICIARIES: 10 FOCUS: EDUCATION, FOOD SECURITY N BENEFICIARIES: 50 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria & other diseases Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger ENSURE THAT GIRLS FROM SLUMS IN THE PHILIPPINES HAVE ACCESS TO BASIC MEDICINES AND PROPER HYGIENE For families living in the slums of Cebu City, access to clean water and sanitation, waste management services, and proper hygiene is extremely scarce. Girls who grow up in these hazardous living conditions and who lack basic hygiene necessities like shampoo and toothpaste, are at great risk of developing illnesses, including respiratory and skin infections. Sadly, their families cannot afford even the most basic medical treatment for these conditions, and, left untreated, these illnesses can cause long-term damage to girls health, and in some cases, can be fatal. Thanks to W4 donors, 10 girls from slum areas have received personal hygiene kits. The kits are provided within the frame of a wider care and educational sponsorship program, run by W4 s local partner through which girls benefit from services essential to their development, including nutrition, safe shelter, healthcare, and emotional support/counseling. KEEP GIRLS FROM CITY SLUMS HEALTHY AND IN SCHOOL WITH DAILY SCHOOL MEALS In the Philippines, natural disasters, higher and volatile food prices and extreme levels of poverty endanger the country s food security. As a result, almost a third of children under age 5 have been stunted in their growth, due to malnutrition over 10% are considered to be severely stunted. Poor families living in the slums of Cebu City simply cannot afford to provide their children with healthy meals and must rely on the cheapest foods available, which commonly lack essential nutrients. Children from slum areas are often malnourished and more likely to fall ill and miss school. Owing to malnutrition, these children have more difficulty concentrating and learning at school and are at higher risk of dangerous diseases. W4 donors provided 3 months worth of daily school meals for 50 girls who are receiving ongoing food assistance, schooling, healthcare, accommodation and counseling through an educational sponsorship program run by W4 s local partner. The school meals serve as a vital supplement to the girls diets and a crucial source of nutrition, ensuring the girls healthy growth and development and their school attendance. Girls improved hygiene and health; Girls increased school attendance; Increase in health awareness among girls and families in the slum areas. Girls improved health; Increase in girls school attendance; Decreased child malnutrition. 2
3 FOCUS: EDUCATION N BENEFICIARIES: 10 Pupils, who are benefitting from educational scholarships, enjoy a nutritious lunch. PROVIDE EARLY CHILDCARE FOR YOUNG GIRLS LIVING IN THE SLUMS OF CITY Over 18% of the Filipino population lives on less than $1.25 PPP a day. Many poor families live with their families in slums, without living necessities such as decent housing, clean water, electricity and healthcare. Young girls from poor families living in slum areas lack adequate care and are often left to their own devices on the streets, where they risk abuse, exploitation, child trafficking, violence, and drug abuse. Although many parents in poor communities are aware of the value of reliable childcare to keep their children safe while they work, they simply cannot afford to pay for childcare services and related costs. 10 girls from an inner-city slum in Cebu received uniforms to wear to a daycare center where they are now enjoying their right to learn and play in safety thanks to W4 donor funding. The daycare center is run by W4 s local partner and provides a nurturing space for girls to benefit from play groups, early learning courses and nutritious daily meals while their parents work. A young girl at a childcare center in Cebu poses with her backpack. Young girls have access to adapted learning materials and guidance; Girls are better protected from the dangers of the slum streets; Increase in girls school attendance; Increased enrollment of girls in. A girl grasps her new school supplies during early learning classes offered by W4 s local partner. 3
4 KEY TERMS & DEFINITIONS DIRECT BENEFICIARIES Direct beneficiaries can be defined as those who participate directly in a project, and thus directly benefit from its existence. Example: The patients who attend a health clinic, or the children who attend a local school would be classified as direct beneficiaries of the clinic or school. INDIRECT BENEFICIARIES Indirect beneficiaries are not participating or directly involved in the project but still benefit from the results of the project. Example: 5 women benefit from a microfinance program to help them create small-scale businesses, enabling them to increase their revenues. Their families will be indirect beneficiaries through the improved quality of life - access to healthcare and education- which will result. Their communities will also benefit indirectly from the development of women s small-scale income generating activities, through local economic development and change in social practices. MICROFINANCE Microfinance provides people excluded from the traditional banking system with access to financial services. The main activity of microfinance is the granting of microcredit to support and develop small-scale economic activities. Microfinance furthermore encompasses microsavings, microinsurance, leasing and migrant remittances. MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDG) The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set for 2015 form a blueprint, agreed to by all the world s countries and leading development institutions, for meeting the needs of the world s poorest. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Improve maternal health 5: Improve maternal health 2: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria & other diseases 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Promote gender equality and empower women 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Ensure environmental sustainability 7: Ensure environmental sustainability Reduce child mortality 4: Reduce child mortality Develop a global partnership for development 8: Develop a global partnership for development PROJECT Longer-term effects produced by a development intervention. Impact could be reported in the amount of change in behavior, attitude, skills, knowledge or condition (situation) of program participants. WOMEN S EMPOWERMENT The concept of empowerment is related to gender equality but distinct from it. The core of empowerment lies in the ability of a woman to control her own destiny. This implies that to be empowered women must not only have equal capabilities (such as education and health) and equal access to resources and opportunities (such as land and employment), they must also have the agency to use those rights, capabilities, resources and opportunities to make strategic choices and decisions (such as are provided through leadership opportunities and participation in political institutions.) And to exercise agency, women must live without the fear of coercion and violence. 1 1) Millennium Project Task Force on Education and Gender Equality, 2005, Taking action: achieving gender equality and empowering women. 4
