14 Paris 2001 Mobility Plan and 2007 Plan Climat set ambitious targets reduce carbon emissions from traffic by 60% by 2020 Launched in ,000 bikes in 1,800 stations available 24/7 Launched in ,750 vehicles and 4000 charging points >65,000 subscribers have driven >15mn km Reduced street parking by 9% (14,300 spots) since 2003 Charging for 95% of spots that were previously free Vehicle kilometers travelled down by 13% since
15 Buenos Aires Ambitious plans to restore the quality of public transportation and reduce emissions Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) launched with 40km of corridors Expected 550,000 passengers/day Converting 117 city blocks to create one of the largest pedestrian zones by 2015 Measures include major changes in parking policy 100km of new cycle paths in city centre (plans to increase to 220km) Bike rental introduced in 2010 with 700 bikes and 28 stations (expanding to 3,000 bikes, 200 stations) BRT on way to deliver 35% journey time reduction for passengers 15
16 Rio de Janiero City faces automobile fleet growing at 5% per year and falling traffic speeds due to congestion Transoeste, first of 4 BRT corridors delivered When complete, the 4 corridors will deliver 150km of busways To date, BRT has delivered better outcomes for citizens: - ~100,000 daily trips - Average time saved of 40 mins/ trip And better outcomes for the city: mn kms/year of vehicle travel reduced - 107,000 tons of CO2 reduced/ year BRT corridors expected to carry ~1.7mn daily trips by
17 San Francisco Research suggests ~1/3rd of city traffic is caused by drivers circling and looking for parking space SFpark is an innovative parking project which provides dynamic pricing, real-time information on parking availability and cost SFpark currently covers 25% of the city s 29,200 parking meters, with plans to expand For drivers: reduces double parking, circling, improves convenience For city: reduces car incentives and increases incomes Dynamic pricing and easy access to parking availability reduces time drivers spend circling 17
18 London Aimed to deliver 100% public transport, walking and cycling Games in 2012 despite increased capacity, not enough to support 3mn extra trips per day City delivered holistic campaign targeting travel hotspots 1 in 3 people changed travel behavior Tube carried 35% more people than usual during Olympics, DLR double and the Overground 54% more Reduced traffic flows in central and inner London by 16.3% (AM peak) and 9.4% (PM peak) City used information campaigns to maximise limited capacity, by getting people to change the way they travel 18
19 Conclusion 1mn people moving to cities each week, compounding issues of congestion, air quality and emissions Critical to get transportation right for cities to be attractive places to live, work and invest in Role of Mayors is key Mayors have strong powers on transport and can transform cities through leadership C40 will continue to work with cities in delivering integrated transport solutions that reduce emissions 19
