2 Key Points The Dell PowerConnect 3324 and 3348 switches are designed to address the connectivity needs of organizations that require a highperformance, standards-based switching solution with advanced management and security features. Furthermore, the PowerConnect 3348 delivers tremendous rack density with its 48 Fast Ethernet ports and 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The PowerConnect 3300 series switches are high-performance switches delivering full wire-speed switching across all ports. The maximum switching capacity of the switch across 24 Fast Ethernet ports and 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports is 8.8 Gbps while the maximum forwarding rate is 6.5 Mpps. The maximum switching capacity of the PowerConnect 3348 switch across 48 Fast Ethernet ports is 13.6 Gbps while the maximum forwarding rate is 10.1 Mpps. The two built-in copper Gigabit Ethernet ports (10/100/1000Base-T) on both switches can accommodate different types of fiber media by inserting optional small form-factor pluggable (SFP) modules in the SFP slots. Alternatively, one of the Gigabit Ethernet ports can be used for stacking multiple systems together so that they can be managed as a single system. The PowerConnect 3300 series switches support a variety of standardsbased advanced switching features, including quality of service (QoS), multicast support, link aggregation, dynamic VLAN configuration, SNMP v2c and flow-based security allowing network administrators to optimize and secure the network. The PowerConnect 3300 series switches can be managed via an industry-standard command line interface (CLI), its embedded Web server, third party SNMP-based management console applications, Telnet or serial connections. The switches also support dual firmware images and configuration files, delivering additional levels of control and flexibility. The PowerConnect 3300 series switches can be stacked with up to six switches with as many as 192 Fast Ethernet ports. Stacking capabilities deliver simplified management as the entire stack of switches can be managed as a single system. The PowerConnect 3300 series switches provide a high level of availability through their optional redundant power supply. The redundant power supply, RPS-600, provides power if the primary power supply fails. 10 for standards-based advanced switching features as well as standards-based remote management The PowerConnect 3300 switch series supports a variety of open standards to ensure flexibility in optimizing your overall network performance (e.g., IEEE 802.1p Class-of-Service or IGMP snooping), availability (port trunking) and security (VLANs and ACLs). CLI management, web browser-based switch management and SNMPbased management capabilities meet a broad variety of management needs. Easy, cost effective transition to Gigabit Ethernet Due to the built-in copper Gigabit Ethernet ports, the PowerConnect 3300 switch series provides a cost effective way to significantly improve your network performance where Gigabit-enabled devices are implemented no additional switch modules have to be purchased to enable Gigabit Ethernet performance. Ideal solution for customers with growing network The PowerConnect 3300 switch series provides a high-performance, rack-dense solution. The 1U form-factor allows you to grow your network while minimizing the amount of rack space required. When the network has to cover large distances, the PowerConnect 3300 switch series can accommodate fiber Gigabit Ethernet modules via its SFP slots. Advanced Security Capabilities The PowerConnect 3300 switch series provides advanced security capabilities. access and traffic can be secured in several different ways. The 3300 series supports SSL and SSH encryption of management traffic between the management host and the switch. Additionally, management access can be controlled through a list of user-definable IP addresses or through RADIUS remote authentication. For access layer security, MAC-based port security can be used to limit which MAC addresses have access to the network. Access Control Lists (ACLs) deliver even tighter control over the network by allowing the network administrator the capability of allowing or denying traffic flows based upon the flow s source or destination MAC address, source or destination IP address, source or destination TCP/UDP port, DSCP value or IP Precedence. Redundant power supply for enhanced availability The optional redundant power supply helps improve system uptime and reduce the potential for an inoperable switch. This solution provides Fast Ethernet connectivity to clients and Gigabit Ethernet uplinks to the PowerConnect This solution provides both a scalable and reliable wiring closet solution. In the wiring closet, up to 192 Fast Ethernet ports can be stacked together using the optional stacking module kit. This stacking functionality allows all ports to be managed as a single system. The solution provides both high-performance and reliability. High performance is established by aggregating Uplink A and Uplink B into a single link aggregation group (LAG). The LAG delivers up to 2 Gbps of connectivity (4 Gbps in full-duplex) between the wiring closet and the aggregation switches. Reliability is also achieved through the redundant links that have been aggregated together. In the event of a port failure on the PowerConnect 5224 or a disconnection on either Uplink A or B, the LAG will still pass traffic through the uplink which is not experiencing any difficulties. Redundant power supplies can be added to the PowerConnect 3300 series and 5224 to decrease the potential for down-time due to a power supply failure. Additional wiring closets can be similarly configured and are represented by Wiring Closets 2 and 3. Typical implementation needs include: - Resilient wiring closet - Cost effective wiring closet solution Page 11 June 2003

This solution provides high-performance capabilities for a large number of users. Switches 1, 2 and 3 are each capable of supporting 48 clients in this environment. Each switch is connected to the Aggregation Switch via the two GbE ports, using either copper or fiber cabling (fiber SFP modules are optional). The two GbE ports can then be aggregated together using the 802.3ad link aggregation capabilities of the PowerConnect switches. This yields a single 2Gbps connection (4 Gbps in full-duplex) to the Aggregation Switch. Consequently, each workgroup of 48 clients will have 2Gbps of bandwidth (4 Gbps in full-duplex) to the Aggregation Switch, whereas in Diagram 1, up to 192 clients share 2Gbps to the aggregation switch. Typical implementation needs include: - High-performance, moderately resilient wiring closet solution Diagram 3 High-Availability Workgroup Page 12 June 2003

This solution provides high availability and fail-over protection for a large number of clients. Just as in Diagram 1, Wiring Closets 1, 2 and 3 are designed as costeffective solutions. At the same time, a second layer of fail-over protection has been added by introducing a second aggregation switch. This protection provides resiliency in the unlikely event that one of the aggregation switches fail. In this example we have enabled rapid spanning tree protocol (RSTP). We will assume that the RSTP configuration has blocked the traffic on Uplink B in Wiring Closet 1, while the RSTP configuration is forwarding traffic on Uplink A. Should one of the aggregation switches fail, RSTP will reconfigure the network to ensure traffic flow to the other aggregation switch. Assume Aggregation Switch 1 fails. STP will detect the failure and begin forwarding traffic on Uplink B. Network reconfiguration typically occurs in less than three seconds. This will allow Switches 1 through 6 to communicate with Aggregation Switch 2 via Uplink B, thus continuing the traffic flow across the network for the entire wiring closet. Additional wiring closets can be similarly configured as represented by Wiring Closets 2 and 3. Typical implementation needs include: - Resilient network to the core - Resilient and cost effective wiring closet solution Page 13 June 2003
