2 VONAGE EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION GUIDE PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY BEFORE BEGINNING THE HARDWARE INSTALLATION. TO ENSURE THAT YOUR SERVICE WORKS PROPERLY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED BELOW. 3 VERIFY SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Please ensure that your system meets the following minimum requirements necessary to use the Vonage Service. High Speed Internet Access (Cable modem or DSL) with a minimum 90 Kbps upstream speed; to test your system s speed (from the computer where you will set up your service), go to the following URL: Analog touch-tone phone IMPORTANT! If you did not purchase a Netgear Websafe Router through Vonage, you must also have a home networking device that supports Network Address Translation (NAT). Please check the Vonage Website ( for a list of devices certified for use with the Vonage Service. VERIFY CONTENTS OF THE VONAGE INSTALLATION KIT Please ensure that your installation kit contains the following items: Welcome Kit ATA-186 Ethernet Cable 5V-DC Power Adaptor and Cable If you purchased a router, your kit should also include: Netgear RP114 Websafe Router AC-DC Power Adaptor Ethernet Cable - 1 -

4 When complete, your installation should look as follows: VERIFY AND CAPTURE COMPUTER NETWORK SETTINGS Depending on your ISP, you may be required to configure the router TCP/IP configuration. In the event it is necessary, we suggest that you locate your computer s settings and write them in the space provided on page three prior to installing your hardware. Windows 2000, XP,.NET 1 From the Windows taskbar, click Start 2 Click Programs 3 From the Programs list, click Accessories 4 From the Accessories list, click Command Prompt 5 Type ipconfig /all 6 Hit Return Windows 95, 98, NT, ME 1 From the Windows taskbar, click Start 2 Click Run 3 Type winipcfg 4 Click OK 5 Select your Ethernet Adapter from the drop down list box that will display 6 Click More Info Apple Macintosh 1 Select the APPLE menu 2 Select System Preferences 3 Select Network 4 Select TCP/IP - 2 -

5 COMPUTER CONFIGURATION Fill in the information below. Host Name (Computer or NetBIOS name) Domain Name (Check the Primary DNS suffix or DNS Suffix Search List field. The format is name.net or name.com) ETHERNET ADAPTER SETTINGS Fill in the information below. DHCP Enabled will be displayed as yes or no. If this setting is not listed here or the answer is no, please go to Appendix A (page six) to find the location of this setting or to enable it. IP Address.. Subnet Mask Default Gateway DHCP Servers DNS Servers (maybe more than one address) MAC Address (Also called Adaptor or Ethernet Address) - 3 -

6 INSTALL THE NETGEAR WEBSAFE ROUTER 1 Turn off power to your computer and broadband modem. (Depending on the modem, powering off may require unplugging it from its power source). 2 Disconnect the network cable connecting the modem to the computer, from the computer. Make note of the port from which you removed the cable. Plug it into the WAN Ethernet port of the router. 3 Next, connect a network cable from the PC (into the port referenced in previous step) to port 1 on the router. 4 Connect the power adapter to the outlet on the rear of the router and plug the adapter into a wall outlet or power surge protector. Verify that the TEST LED (see diagram) turns on within a few seconds. 6 After approximately 30 seconds, verify that: The TEST LED has turned off The LOCAL LINK/ACT LED is lit (If a LINK/ACT LED is lit, a link has been established to the connected device) 7 Turn on the power to the cable modem. Wait approximately 60 seconds. Make sure it boots up completely before moving to the next step. Check on the front of the router that the LOCAL port 100 LED is lit 8 Turn on the power to the computer. Check on the front of the router that the LOCAL port 100 LED is lit 9 Check that the router is installed properly by going to on your computer s Web browser. If the page does not display correctly, see Appendix B (page seven)

7 INSTALL THE ATA Plug your touch-tone telephone into the PHONE 1 port on the back of the ATA Connect an Ethernet cable from the router (port 2) to the ATA Connect the power adapter cord to the power supply. Then, connect the cord to the power supply port on the rear of the ATA-186, and plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet or power surge protector. 4 Wait approximately 1-2 minutes. Pick up the telephone handset. The red button on the top of the ATA-186 will illuminate. Press the button and dial 80#. A voice prompt will announce the telephone s IP address. 5 Hang up the telephone. 6 Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. 7 Make a phone call. Vonage service requires that you use 11-digit dialing (1+area code+seven-digit phone number). VIEW YOUR CALLS ON THE WEB! 1 Go to on your computer s Web browser. 2 Select the Login link on the upper right corner of the screen. 3 Type in your username and password, and select enter. 4 You are now on the Vonage Web Dashboard. From the Web Dashboard, you can view information about the calls that you make and receive. Congratulations! You have successfully installed your Vonage service! - 5 -

8 APPENDIX A: How To Enable DHCP On Your Computer Windows 2000, ME, NET 1 From the Windows taskbar, click Start 2 Click Settings, then Control Panel 3 Double Click the Network Icon 4 Double Click on Ethernet Adapter Icon 5 Click Properties 6 Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) 7 Select Obtain an IP address automatically 8 Click OK to exit the window 9 Click OK to exit the next window, DHCP will be enabled Windows 95, 98 1 From the Window taskbar, click Start 2 Click Settings, then Control Panel 3 Double-click the Network Icon 4 Select the configuration tab 5 From the list of network components, select TCP/IP (Choose the adapter associated with the Ethernet adapter in your computer) 6 Click Properties, the TCP/IP window opens 7 Select Obtain an IP address automatically DHCP will be enabled Apple Macintosh 1 Select the APPLE Menu 2 Select System Prefs 3 Select Network 4 Select TCP/IP Reboot your computer Return to Step 3 and finish gathering your data 5 Select Configure Using DHCP, DHCP will be enabled - 6 -

9 APPENDIX B: Configuring The Netgear Router TO CONFIGURE INTERNET ACCESS USING YOUR BROWSER 1 Turn on the router and wait for initialization to complete. Allow at least one minute and verify that the TEST LED is off. 2 Reboot your PC to obtain DHCP configuration from the router. 3 Launch your web browser. 4 In the Address box of your browser, type and press ENTER. A login window opens as shown below: 5 If your DSL login screen appears instead of the window shown above you will need to: a. Select tools from the browser navigation bar b. Select Internet Options from the menu list (A window will open) c. Select the Connections tab (Make note of the current dial-up setting) d. Select Never Dial a Connection and click ok e. Return to the beginning of this step (Step c) When you have completed all of the steps in Appendix B you will need to repeat this process, selecting the original dial-up setting noted in Step c

10 6 Type admin in the User Name box, 1234 in the Password box, and then click OK. If your router password was previously changed, enter the current password. 7 In the opening screen, shown below, select WIZARD SETUP. 8 In the first Wizard screen, enter your account s Host Name and Domain Name, as shown below: These parameters may be necessary to access your ISP s services such as mail or news servers

11 If you leave the Domain Name field blank, the router will attempt to learn the domain automatically from the ISP. If this is not successful, you will need to enter it manually. 9 Click on Next to go to the ISP Parameters screen, shown below. This screen determines whether a login program will be run. If your service provider does not require a login program, leave Encapsulation as Ethernet and proceed to Step Click on Next to go to the final Wizard screen shown below. This screen provides setup for the following parameters

12 a. WAN IP address Assignment: Unless your ISP has assigned a fixed permanent IP address for your use, select Get automatically from ISP. Otherwise, enter your IP Address, Subnet Mask, and the IP Address of your ISP s gateway router. b. DNS Server Address Assignment: If you know that your ISP does not automatically transmit DNS addresses to the router during login, select Use this server and enter the IP address of the ISP s DNS server. A DNS server is a host on the Internet that translates Internet names (such as www addresses) to numeric IP addresses. Typically your ISP transfers the IP addresses of one or two DNS servers to your router during login. If the ISP does not transfer an address, you must obtain it from the ISP and enter it manually here. If you enter an address here, you should reboot your PC after configuring the router. c. WAN MAC address: If your ISP allows access by only one specific PC s Ethernet MAC address, select Spoof this PC s MAC address and enter the IP address here. 11 Click on Finish. For convenience, the IP address of the PC you are now using should already appear. If this is not the PC whose MAC address is to be used, enter the PC s IP address. Some ISPs will register the Ethernet MAC address of the network interface card in your PC when your account is first opened. They will then only accept traffic from the MAC address of that PC. This feature allows your router to masquerade as that PC by using its MAC address. 12 Reboot the cable modem by turning the power off and then on again. 13 Go back to Step 4 Install the Netgear Websafe Router
