TABLE OF CONTENTS I. WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? 3 II. GOOD WORKS 5 III. TRUST JESUS 7 IV. GET BAPTIZED 9 2 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist CHurch
LONG HOLLOW BAPTIST CHURCH RESCUE WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? (ROMANS 3:9-20) Go to for teaching videos and discussion guides. MAIN POINT Paul is making a case to the Roman believers that the whole world needs the gospel, and he has demonstrated that Gentiles deserve God s wrath. Lest Jews think they will escape God s judgment by their privileged position, Paul now shows that they also need the gospel as a result of failing to obey God s law. INTRO QUESTIONS What does it mean to get your hopes up? Have you ever gotten your hopes up about something that didn t work out? What happened? How did you feel? Why is the concept of hope such a critical part of life? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What stood out to you the most from this week s message and why? > WHAT THE GOSPEL REALLY IS. In your own words describe the gospel. Give a your in answer in one sentence. > EPHESIANS 2:1-10 If this is the gospel how would you modify your answer? What do we need? Why do we need it? How do we get it? How does our life look different after we get it? > ROMANS 3:9-18. Do you think most people in the world think they are basically good or basically bad? How would you explain to someone that they are not good? Which description of unrighteousness, not being good, from this passage do you think best fits modern society? Why? 3 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
If you were honest, are you someone who rebels against God primarily with your mind (verse 11), your mouth (verses 13-14), or your fighting feet (verses 15-19)? Do you think most people tend to fear God? Why or why not (verse 18)? How had the Jews failed to understand God s plan for the world? What was wrong with the way they viewed Gentiles? > ROMANS 3: According to these verses, what is the law s purpose? What makes verses 19 and 20 such hopeless verses? APPLICATION QUESTIONS Even after finding Christ we can often place our hope in other things. Is there something in your life right now that you are hoping in other than God? In other words, what in your life, if it fell apart, would cause your whole world to crumble? How does the gospel answer that need? How is the gospel encouraging in the face of pain and suffering? Do you know anyone who is without hope? If so, how can you help that person this week? What can our group do together to share the hope of Christ with the hopeless of Middle Tennessee in the near future? 4 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
LONG HOLLOW BAPTIST CHURCH RESCUE GOOD WORKS (ROMANS 4:1-26) Go to for teaching videos and discussion guides. MAIN POINT Even our good works cannot save us from our sin problem. We are justified by faith, not by works. INTRO QUESTIONS What is the hardest project or task you have ever worked on? What motivated you to work so hard? In what area of your life do you get the most reward for your hard work? Your job? Your parenting? Your relationships? Your physical fitness? In what area do you get the least amount of return on your investment? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What was your big takeaway from this week s message and why? > ROMANS 4:1-8. Last week we were encouraged to not in hope ourselves. Left to ourselves we would be destroyed by sin and have no hope. Why do you think Paul used Abraham as a case study for hope and righteousness? Re-read verse 2. Why did Abraham s works not justify him before God? Have you ever felt like God was disappointed with you or stopped loving you? When did that happen? What is righteousness? Accord to verse 3 how was Abraham counted righteous? How did Paul contrast the one who works and the one who believes? > EPHESIANS 2:8-10. What is grace? What is faith? Based on what we learned from Romans 4:1-8, what is the relationship between works and faith? As God s workmanship, write out five ways you can be a dispenser of grace to others this week that are specific to you. 5 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
APPLICATION QUESTIONS Why do we like to rely on our works? In what way does a works-based justification seem easier to us than faith-based justification? Who is the most pious person you know? Do you think they could live a life that would merit justification by works? Why or why not? Why should we consider our failure to do good works to be good news? Why is it more difficult for most of us to trust God in faith than to try to reach Him by works? What can we do to increase our trust? What can you do this week to start living in light of the gospel of grace instead of your own works? 6 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
LONG HOLLOW BAPTIST CHURCH RESCUE TRUST JESUS (ROMANS 5:1-11) Go to for teaching videos and discussion guides. MAIN POINT Having established that salvation is through faith in God and not through works, Paul next considered the benefits of the life of faith. The agent of these great blessings is Jesus Christ, who at the appointed time died for us. This extravagant sacrifice of dying for unworthy people reinforces the truth of God s great love for us. INTRO QUESTIONS What is the most intense fight, physical or non-physical, that you have ever been in with a friend or family member? How did you reconcile your relationship with that person? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What stood out to you in this week s sermon and why? > ROMANS 5:1-5. How do we become righteous before God? What is the result of standing righteous before Him? What does true peace look like according to verse 1? What two things did Paul say we can rejoice in because of God s grace? Which of Paul s stated reasons for rejoicing is a little tougher for you to swallow? Why? How can a believer s Christlike endurance of suffering offer a testimony of hope to others? What has helped you see God s hand and feel His love during times of affliction in your life? Out of the areas of suffering, perseverance, character, and hope, where is God working in your life right now? How is He working? What incident in your life can you look back on and see the truth of verses 3-5? > ROMANS 5:6-11. Is there someone you would die for? If so, who and why? 7 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
Would you be willing to die for a good person that you knew? How about one that you did not know? Does that change things for you at all? How was Christ different (verse 7b.)? Why did we need to be reconciled to God? What separated us from Him? Does the word enemies really seem appropriate? Why or why not? How did Jesus accomplish this bringing us back to God? What impact does this have on our relationship with God? With others? APPLICATION QUESTIONS From this passage, what are the benefits that come to a Christian? Which one do you need the most right now? How has this passage helped you more fully appreciate the benefits that are yours because of God s grace? What are some ways we can celebrate these benefits? How can you show others the beauty of the gospel by the way you seek to live these out? What can you do this week to keep the reality of your reconciliation present in your thoughts? How might your week look differently if you do? How can our group hold each other accountable to both focus on the gospel and entrust it to someone else this week? 8 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
LONG HOLLOW BAPTIST CHURCH RESCUE GET BAPTIZED (ROMANS 6:1-11) Go to for teaching videos and discussion guides. MAIN POINT Baptism is done out of a response to the death of Christ in obedience to the command of Christ. Baptism represents dying to our old selves and being made alive in Christ. INTRO QUESTIONS Have you ever had to meet certain requirements or perform certain rituals to be a part of a group? If so, share your experience. Why was there a requirement or a ritual as a part of joining that group? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What something you took away from this week s message? > MATTHEW 28: Why do you think Jesus commanded baptism when He sent out His disciples? > ROMANS 6:1-3. Why might we be tempted to think God s grace is a license to keep on sinning? What kinds of changes would you expect to see in someone s life once they experience God s grace through salvation? What did Paul mean by, Do you not know? What does this indicate about the practice of baptism? > ROMANS 6:4-11. Why should baptism come after we have received salvation (see vv. 6-7)? Why do you think baptism is a good picture of being dead to sin and being made alive in Christ? What does baptism have to do with death to sin? Why is it important to show others that we have died to sin? 9 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
How does being raised in baptism paint a picture of walking or living in new life (v. 4)? What does this new life look like? > MATTHEW 3: Why did John the Baptist think he should not baptize Jesus? How did Jesus baptism show who He was, and what He was called to do? How would you summarize Jesus life after His baptism? How should Jesus life following baptism be a model for our life after baptism? Peek forward to Matthew 4. Where does Jesus go after His baptism? What desert might God be calling you to? APPLICATION QUESTIONS What are you saying to others when you take the step of baptism? Why is it so important? What encouragement or support can you expect from the church when you declare your faith through baptism? In what areas of your life have you demonstrate a changed life? At home? At work? At school? At church? 10 RESCUE Long Hollow Baptist Church
