1 Curriculum 1 (5) GENERAL INFORMATION DEGREE PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION PERIOD SCOPE DESCRIPTION LANGUAGE OF STUDIES CODE DEGREE Master s Degree Programme in Automation Technology The recommended period of study is two academic years, and the study period allowed is three academic years. 60 ECTS credits The degree programme is aimed at specialists seeking career development, greater responsibility, expansion of technological competence in the field and the management, business and project skills required in international engineering positions. Graduates of the degree programme can function as active developers and producers of new competence in their work community. Finnish YIA14S1 Master of Engineering DEGREE LEVEL National Qualifications Framework level 7. TARGET GROUP AND ADMISSION CRITERIA STUDIES KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES PROFILE Persons with a degree from a university of applied sciences in automation, electrical engineering or information technology, or another applicable post-secondary degree, are eligible as students. The applicability of degrees is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Applicants who, after receiving a post-secondary degree, have had at least three years of work experience in the field, can apply for the master s degree programme. JAMK also accepts as work experience the work experience acquired after a previously completed educational level or a higher vocational degree. Student selection is based on the points acquired in an entrance examination (max. 50 p.), thesis grade (max. 30 p.) and work experience (max. 20 p.). All eligible applicants are invited to attend the entrance examination. The entrance examination consists of an interview (max. 30 p.) and a written assignment (max. 20 p.). Applicants must get at least 20 points in total to be eligible for admission. The student has the knowledge, skills and capability to work in working-life development and management positions requiring expertise, including in internationally networked organisations. The student has the latest information in the field and is capable of entrepreneurship-oriented activities and developing his/her own competence and the competence of his/her organisation with high quality. The student can react quickly to changes, create and analyse new operating models and manage change processes using systematic development methods. The degree programme is aimed at specialists in automation and electrical engineering seeking career development, greater responsibility, expansion of technological competence and the management, business and project skills required in engineering positions. Graduates of the degree programme can function as active developers and producers of new competence in their work community. The degree programme also helps deepen and strengthen professional qualifications across traditional professional boundaries. This offers opportunities for new and more challenging work tasks and career advancement. The job market value of graduates of the degree programme is increased through career planning and self-development.
2 Curriculum 2 (5) COURSE STRUCTURE COURSE CONTENT AND PERFORMANCE A graph of the degree programme, with each academic year covering 30 credits. The studies include advanced specialisation studies, elective studies and a thesis, or a working-life development assignment. The studies consist of courses and larger competence areas. The technology studies included in the degree programme consist of topics related to automation information networks and security, along with an automation project, which is mainly completed independently. Other study topics include management and leadership in a changing operating environment, management accounting and international project and business activities. Courses must be completed within two semesters from starting them. Exceptions include the bachelor s thesis, practical training, special working life-oriented project studies and large courses carried out over several terms. If a course is left unfinished, the student must retake it. During the first meeting of the course, the learning objectives and content of the course, alternative completion methods and criteria for assessment are reviewed, the exam date is set (immediate completion) and the end date of the course is announced. Work cannot be turned in after the end date. The student may attempt to complete the course three times: during the immediate completion or on two separately specified resit exam dates.
3 Curriculum 3 (5) LEARNING ASSESSMENT ACCREDITATION AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING MODE OF STUDY PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND KNOW-HOW The learning outcomes are assessed in relation to the learning objectives of the course. The assessment decisions are based on the assessment criteria specified in the course descriptions. Courses are assessed using the grading scale specified in the course description. Depending on the purpose, the scale may be either five-step 5 (excellent), 4 (very good), 3 (good), 2 (satisfactory) and 1 (adequate) or Pass (S)/Fail (0). The course assessment is Fail (0) if the student fails to achieve the minimum learning objectives for passing the course. The student has the right to know which assessment criteria are applied to his/her learning. The course assessment is recorded in the study record no later than one month after the stated end date of the course and always before the end of the academic year. Prior Learning Recognition procedures are described in the Degree Regulations and in the Study Guide. The primary modes of delivery are classroom and remote learning. The learning process leading to the master s degree is carried out alongside work as a multiform study, which flexibly combines periods of classroom teaching and group work, online learning and independent studies. The student is offered opportunities to complete learning tasks included in courses for his/her work community in a flexible manner. In the planning of studies, it is possible to build a personal study path through recognition of work and a wide utilisation of the courses offered by all of JAMK s master s degree programmes, such as subjects and courses that are common to JAMK s master s degree programmes. The curriculum of the degree programme consists of competence areas: the learning process progresses through one competence area at a time. The competence area consists of courses. General and degree programme-specific competences are linked to competence areas and courses, and they involve competence development throughout the degree programme. The student makes choices within competence areas/courses according to his/her career plan. The competence areas of the degree programme and their descriptions: Automation technology studies (10 credits): The student can function as a specialist in demanding international automation projects, which apply advanced information network technology and safety solutions that meet the latest requirements. An automation project (5 credits) is a small-scale development project carried out for the employer company. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND REGULATIONS FURTHER INFORMATION Management and leadership in a changing operating environment (10 credits): The student can function in managerial and leadership positions in a multicultural work environment. He/she is capable of business management in a networked organisation and utilising management accounting elements in managerial work. There are no statutory qualification requirements in the field. The student may be charged a separate material fee to reflect the actual procurement and production costs for study materials, tools, equipment or supplies, which the student gets to keep after the degree programme ends. If the student acquires equivalent material elsewhere, the material fee will not be charged (Government Decree 1230/2009, Section 2). The studies for the master s degree are free of charge for the student.
4 Curriculum 4 (5) GRADUATION Bering awarded a master s degree certificate requires the student to complete the studies of the degree programme within his/her study period in accordance with his/her Personal Learning Plan. EMPLOYMENT AND FURTHER STUDIES EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES OPPORTUNITIES FOR POST- GRADUATE STUDIES OTHER INFORMATION JAMK University of Applied Sciences gives the student a certificate for completing a master s degree at a university of applied sciences (60 credits). The certificate includes a transcript of records. Students of the Degree Programme in Automation Technology have a background in electrical engineering, automation and information technology as specialists. The master s degree has significantly advanced their career development and increased their market value in existing or new and more challenging positions.
