Avaya Solution & Interoperability Test Lab Configuring Dynamic User Mode VPN between Avaya SG200 and SG208 Security Gateways to support Avaya IP Telephony Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describes how to configure a user-mode Virtual Private Network (VPN) using the Avaya SG-series Security Gateway to support an H.323 IP Trunk between VoIP gateway devices in a dynamic network environment. The Device User Account feature available in the Small/Home Office Avaya Security Gateways can be extended to protect Avaya Media Servers and Avaya Media Gateways. Utilizing this expanded capability, the Small/Home Office SG-series can simulate a VPNRemote Client and be authenticated by another centralized Avaya Security Gateway using a client VPN tunnel. The deployment of this dynamic VPN configuration will allow a remote Avaya Security Gateway to secure Avaya IP Telephony at branch or regional locations that receive dynamic IP addressing via broadband connectivity such as DSL or cable modem. 1 of 13

1. Introduction These Application Notes describe the configuration of a user mode VPN tunnel using the Avaya SG-series Security Gateway in a dynamic IP environment to support Avaya Communication Manager. The Small/Home Office edition Avaya Security Gateways (SG5, SG5x and SG200) can enable the Device User Account to authenticate with a centrally located Avaya Security Gateway and be authorized as a single VPNRemote Client. The Device User Account is authenticated and secured automatically once VPN connectivity is established and permits attached devices defined in the virtual DHCP IP Devices table to forward traffic over a client IPSec tunnel. The Avaya SG200 was configured with a VPN policy to authorize the S8300 Media Server controlling the G700 Media Gateway and authenticate IP Telephony automatically when establishing VPN connectivity to the private networks behind the SG208. The public port on the SG200 was configured as a DHCP Client to receive an IP address from a simulated ISP. The SG208 was configured to secure and permit the configured Device User Account and associated devices behind the Avaya SG200 to reach the S8700 Media Server controlling the G600 Media Gateway. An Avaya P580 MultiService Switch was used to simulate the WAN and an Extreme Alpine 3804 switch was used to provide the core Layer-3 switching for VoIP traffic shown in Figure 1. Static routes were also configured on the Extreme Networks Alpine 3804 switch to allow IP routing back to the remote networks. 2 of 13

3. Configure the Avaya SG200 Security Gateway The following configuration steps for the Avaya SG200 Security Gateway will assume the device is being administered from the factory default settings. 1. Log into the Avaya SG200 through the console port using login credentials and configure the public and private interface. By default, the public interface is configured as a DHCP Client. Below is an example for the initial configuration of the Avaya SG200 private interface: VSU(configure interface)[11]# set interface private -mode ipstatic ip mask Access the web interface of the Avaya SG200 using the private IP address configured in the previous step. Connect to the configured private IP address with a web browser using the default login credentials. 3. Click on Configure Interfaces, select the private interface (ethernet1) of the Avaya SG200 and click Modify. Click on the drop-down menu under IP Config Mode and enable the DHCP Server. Enter the IP address and mask of the private interface for the virtual DHCP Server and enter the range of dynamic IP addresses that will be used for local IP devices (Figure 2). Figure 2: SG200 DHCP Server mode 4. Click on IP Devices under the Media Interface Configuration menu for the private interface (ethernet1). Enter the MAC address and IP address for the following modules contained within the S8300 Media Server and G700 Media Gateway (Figure 3): Avaya G700 Media Gateway Processor (MGP) Avaya VoIP module (Voip-v0) 4 of 13

Avaya S8300 Media Server Note: The IP addresses used for the above network modules must fall within the IP Range of the virtual DHCP Server in the previous step. Figure 3: Registering AVAYA SG200 IP Devices 4. Click on Configure Users SG200 Users. Create a user profile for IP Telephony by selecting ip-phone-user, which is configured by default on the Avaya SG200 (Figure 4). Figure 4: SG200 Users window 5. Select the correct Avaya SG200 user and click Modify. Under the Modify SG200 User screen, create a password for ip-phone-user and ensure that the Enable User box has been checked. Click on the area specified for VSU/SG Address and type in the IP address for the remote SG208 that will provide VPN authentication and click Save (Figure 5). 5 of 13

Figure 5: AVAYA SG200 User Authentication Profile 6. Click on Configure Security VPN Setup. Click on the VPN Mode dialog button and select User VPN Mode to enable VPN access for authorized users (Figure 6). Figure 6: AVAYA SG200 VPN Mode 4. Configure the Avaya SG208 Security Gateway The following configuration steps for the Avaya SG208 Security Gateway will assume the device is being administered from the factory default settings. 1. Log into the SG208 through the console port using the default login credentials and configure the public and private interface. Below is an example for the initial configuration of the SG208: VSU(configure interface)[22]# set interface public -mode ipstatic -ip mask gateway VSU(configure interface)[23]# set interface private -mode ipstatic ip mask of 13

2. Access the web interface of the SG208 using the private IP address configured in the previous step. Connect to the configured private IP address with a web browser using the default login credentials. 3. Select Configure Network Static Routes. Click on Add to include the network and next-hop address to achieve IP routing to local network devices (Figure 7). Figure 7: Adding Static Routes for SG Select Configure Users Remote Users. Click on Add to create a user profile for remote users. When prompted, type in the username and password of the remote user being authenticated for VPN access (Figure 8). Figure 8: Adding Remote Users for SG Select Configure Network NAT. Check the box Download Client IP Pool Address and Apply NAT Tunnel to enable the SG208 NAT feature and download translated IP addresses from the Client IP Address Pool to the remote VPN device (Figure 9). 7 of 13

Figure 9: Download Client IP Pool Address and Apply Tunnel NAT Note: For a less secure approach, the SG208 has the capability to create a user-mode VPN without the Apply Tunnel NAT function. A remote VPN user can be authenticated and given authorized access to devices protected by the SG208 by implementing the dynamic VPN configuration steps used in firmware versions before VPNos 4.3. By using this method, traffic from the remote VPN user will bypass any NAT translations in the Client IP Address Pool and use the private interface of the SG208 as the source address for the virtual adapter. 6. Select Configure Security Dynamic Policy. Click on Address Pool to configure the range of addresses used by the remote users being authenticated for VPN access to devices protected by the SG208. This dynamic policy will apply to the external Avaya Security Gateway acting as a VPN user so traffic from the remote SG200 will use a translated IP address from the configured range as the source address (Figure 10). Figure 10: SG208 Client IP Address Pool 7. Select Configure Security VPN Setup. Click on the Add button to start configuration of a new VPN. Create a VPN Name and an Authentication Method in the designated areas 8 of 13

displayed in the dialog window. Enter the local IP addresses and subnet mask assigned for VPN access under Local IP Groups and click Add (Figure 11). Click Next. Figure 11: Configuring Local VPN Parameters 8. Ignore the Zone option for modifying the VPN interface and leave the remaining options blank then click the Next button (Figure 12). Figure 12: Configuring Remote VPN Parameters 9. Under Available User(s), highlight the remote users configured in the previous steps and click the button to enable the remote users as VPN members to the SG208. Verify the selected remote VPN users are displayed under the Member User(s) box and click the Next button (Figure 13). 9 of 13
