9 9 WHAT CHALLENGES ARE THERE FOR WOMEN IN INDUSTRY? Attracting women to the industry in the first place not all about hard hats and boiler suits. Dual career couples or women as primary carers for families often means limited global & regional mobility, which limits opportunities for upward advancement. Still a perception that women must compromise work/life balance to progress their careers. Still some senior roles or teams where there is not enough representation of women. Offering flexibility to women in senior roles continues to be a challenge. Although the industry has progressed, there remains Old School attitudes towards women in business in some parts of the industry and some parts of the world.

10 10 WHAT MORE COULD THE INDUSTRY DO TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN WOMEN? Increase visibility to girls making career choices while at secondary school Align community involvement efforts with organisations (like Engineering Development Trust) to demonstrate values and commitment to diversity Provide opportunities for mentoring and sponsorship to aid women in career planning Challenge what contribution in the workplace looks like, so family status is not an impairment to career progression Create networks which enable women to solve business problems, like how to do business in male dominated environments

11 11 WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL? 1. Passion for the industry, what role it plays in the world, and wanting to make your personal contribution 2. Be really good at what the company/ industry values and needs you to do 3. Be a strategic thinker understand how your work interconnects with others, fits into the bigger picture, and plan your work accordingly 4. Collaborate and build respect for mutual success, and develop long-term working relationships over the span of your career 5. Network reach out beyond your current contacts and find ways to connect to create opportunities and build mutual success 6. Be agile to adapt to a changing landscape 7. Build resilience for inevitable challenges; know when to give up and when to say no 8. Have fun!
