1 Professional Teaching Portfolio Create both an electronic and hard copy portfolio for completion of associate teaching. These portfolios are based on the INTASC (Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium) Model Core Teaching Standards as designated by the Michigan Department of Education. For each standard you will include artifacts that demonstrate that you have met this standard. Create a filing system for collecting artifacts electronic and/or hard copy items. Be sure to match your artifacts with the standards (categorize) as you collect them to make completing this process easier. Be on the lookout for holes as you collect artifacts. Standards that are not well documented by your artifacts will become evident as you collect and categorize them. Artifact: Tangible evidence of knowledge that is gained, skills that are mastered, values that are clarified, or dispositions and attitudes that is characteristic of you. INTASC Model Core Teaching Standards Standard 1: Learner Development The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences. Standard 2: Learning Differences The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards. Standard 3: Learning Environments The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. Standard 4: Content Knowledge The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teachers and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of

2 the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. Standard 5: Application of Content The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. Standard 6: Assessment -- The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher s and learner s decision making. Standard 7: Planning for Instruction The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context. Standard 8: Instructional Strategies The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways. Standard 9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices ad actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner. Standard 10: Leadership and Collaboration The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession. Contents of Portfolios *Think about who your intended audience is for your portfolio(s). Each assessor has a slightly different perspective make sure your portfolio matches this.

3 Rationale. In each section of your portfolios you will insert various artifacts to document your proficiency and experience for the intended standard. The reader needs to know WHY you included these particular artifacts. Well written rationale answer these five questions: (order is not important) What? What is the experience reflected in this document? What? What is the artifact? So What? What does this work say about my growing competence? Where and Why? Under which standard is it filed? Why there? Now What? What will I do differently in the future? How will the skills I ve gained transfer to new experiences? Sample Rationale: Artifact(s): Video and Reflection This artifact is a video and reflection of a lesson which was one of my first attempts to use cooperative learning with my 3 rd grade class. It shows how I laid the ground rules and communicated the expectations clearly to the students. I was following a model known as Student Team Learning developed by Robert Slavin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins University. This video shows the initial challenges of monitoring all the activities while employing this instructional method. It definitely demonstrates my willingness to try a new strategy and my ability to grow my practice of using multiple strategies. I can honestly say that the amount of student engagement and level of problem solving have more than doubled in my mathematics class through the use of cooperative learning. Although the reflection of the lesson shows tremendous need for improvement on my part, the overall outcome of this lesson has convinced me that it was worth the effort. Preface About the Author Biographical Sketch This section should be one page of information about you that is not readily apparent from your resume or even your collection of artifacts. Think about the following categories and questions as you write this: Why you chose to become a teacher? o Have you had a lifelong dream of becoming a teacher? o What set of circumstances in your life brought you to the teaching profession? o Who influenced you most as you were growing up or as you were making decisions about your life s work?

4 Your Personal Attributes o What attributes do you have that would make you a good teacher? o Are you a warm and nurturing person who is especially encouraging to others? o Do you have a professional demeanor and business like attitude? o Do you hold high expectations for your own success and for the success of your students? o Have you overcome some personal obstacles that would help you empathize with students who do the same? o Have had unique experiences or travels that would enhance your students learning in your classroom? Your Long-Term Goals and Ambitions o Where so you see yourself in five years? In ten years? o What ambitions do you have as an educator? o How will your goals and ambitions make you a better teacher?
