FluidMath -- Students Create the Problem Monday, October 14, :37 AM Use FluidMath to create a rational function that has a vertical asymptote at x = -2 and has no holes. Write the equation and snip/paste a picture of the graph at right. Is continuous at x = -2? To answer this question, apply the definition of continuity at x = -2 1) Is defined? Use one-sided limits to show why/why not. 3) Digital Ink in Math Original Page 30

Winplot: Explicit vs. Implicit Thursday, February 6, :01 AM Use the Equa > Explicit menu to graph Is this a function? Why or why not? What shape is the graph? Snip the graph into your notes. Use the One > Slider menu to show the tangent line to at x = 1 (click to select the "Tangents" checkbox). What is the slope of the tangent line? Close this window. Click on the function in the Inventory box. Click on Derive. What just happened? Use the Equa > Implicit menu to graph Is this a function? Why or why not? What form is this equation in? Can you put this equation in the other form? What shape is the graph? Snip the graph into your notes. One > Slider does not work for this equation. Can you draw a tangent line to the function at x = 1? What information do you need that you DID NOT NEED for the first graph? Digital Ink in Math Original Page 33

Mix & Match Software: The Red Bird, Part 1 Sunday, February 2, :39 PM Using the Google Chrome browser, go to Play the game called "Poached Eggs" (you don't have to login to play this game). Level 1 is fine. Have your snipping tool ready -- you have to be quick with this part. Shoot the bird from his slingshot. After the bird lands, snip a picture of the bird's path. Open Geometer's Sketchpad. Paste the snipped image into Sketchpad. In Sketchpad: a. Turn on the coordinates (Graph > Define Coordinate System) b. Click on the origin to move the grid so that the bottom of the slingshot is at the origin. c. Click on the Marker Tool. Use your stylus to trace the path of the bird. Make sure your drawn path is selected. Use the menu Number > Define Function From Drawing to ask Sketchpad to fit an equation to the position graph. Sketchpad WILL NOT give you the exact equation - it just shows you a text box called "f(x):drawing". What does this function represent? What are generic units of the x-axis and y-axis? Right-click on the text box "f(x): Drawing" and choose Properties. Click on the Function tab. Move the slider to Max Smoothing. Right click on "f(x): Drawing" again. Choose "Define Derivative Function". Sketchpad WILL NOT give you the exact equation. Right click on the derivative function's text box. Click Plot Function. The function will not be smooth. a. What does this function represent? b. Why does the bird have a positive velocity at t = 0? a. Approximately where does the velocity of the bird equal zero? How do you know? c. How would you describe the position of the bird where the velocity equals zero? d. Why does the velocity equation have negative values? What is happening to the bird when velocity is negative? Digital Ink in Math Original Page 37
The Red Bird, Part 2 Sunday, February 2, :23 PM 1. Go back to your image in Sketchpad. You can delete the line you drew. 2. Use the Point tool to create 8-10 points along the bird's path. Be sure to create a point where x = 0 and a point where the path ends. What are the generic units of the x-value and y-value of each coordinate? a. Use the Arrow Tool to select all of the coordinates -- click on the coordinates one at a time to select them. Click on Measure > Coordinates to get a list of ordered pairs of each point. 3. Open Excel. Split your screen so that Excel is on one side and Sketchpad is on the other. a. Enter the x-values of each coordinate in one column and the y-values in a second column. b. Highlight these cells and create a scatterplot. c. Right click the data points and choose Add Trendline. Select Polynomial and type order "2". Click the checkbox to "Display Equation on Chart". d. Write your equation here. What does this equation represent? 7. Find the bird's velocity equation. Write it here: 8. Find the velocity of the bird at: t = 1 t = 7 t = 14 What does the velocity at each point tell you about how the bird is moving? 9. Find the bird's acceleration equation. Write it here: 10. What does the equation tell you about the bird's acceleration? 11. Graph the bird's position, velocity, and acceleration in Winplot. Use the menu View > View to set a viewing window (Check the "Set Corners" box). Snip the graph into your notes. a. How are the shapes of the position, velocity, and acceleration graphs related? b. When the bird's height is at its maximum, what is the bird's velocity? 1) How could you find the answer to the question above by looking at the relationship between the graph of velocity and position? 2) Use Winplot to find the time at which the bird's height is a maximum. Remember that using One > Slider and checking the "Tangents" box will give you a tangent line to move. What kind of tangent line does the graph of position have when the bird's height is a maximum? c. What is the bird's velocity when it hits the pigs (or at the last point on your function)? Digital Ink in Math Original Page 38
The Yellow Bird Sunday, February 2, :25 PM The yellow bird's trajectory is a parabola, until you touch the screen. When you touch (or click) the screen, the yellow bird quickly accelerates towards the target, following the tangent line to the parabola. On the graph above, the bird was accelerated at the "puff of smoke". Draw the tangent line to the parabola at the "puff of smoke". Does it follow the path shown? Below is the picture of the trajectory of a yellow bird that was not accelerated. 1) 2) 3) Would it be possible to accelerate the bird anywhere along this path so that he hits the target at the red X? Why or why not? Which point along the bird's path should you accelerate him in order to land close to the pig on the right? Mark the path on the picture. In a different color, sketch a parabolic trajectory with a tangent line that would land the bird at the red x when he is accelerated. Digital Ink in Math Original Page 39
