1 CARDIO GAMES Overview The cardio games unit was designed to offer students fast-paced games that help the student achieve cardiovascular fitness. Many of the games borrow rules from traditional games, however, they have been modified in order to increase movement for all participants. During the unit it is important for students to listen carefully and ask questions as a game is being discussed. Thinking of strategic plays is discouraged during this time. The best time for thinking about and discussing strategy is while you are sitting out between games. Your teacher provides this time so you can get your heart rate down, since hard play during the game could potentially put you over your target heart rate zone. General Rules Most games will require you to steal the ball only in your defensive half of the court. Also, most games will only allow you to attempt to score when all your teammates are in the offensive half of the court. These rules are created to increase the cardio workout for all during the game by increasing the amount of running for all. You are expected to get involved on both offense and defense. Do not play hard on offense at the expense of defensive play or your grade will suffer. Games are designed to work better if you utilize short passes instead of long passes. Players are encouraged to get all teammates involved EVEN IF YOUR TEAM LOSES as a result of this action. Players are encouraged to play hard on offense and defense but DO NOT FOUL. One can play intensely without needing to foul. In order to avoid controversy about the score at the end of the game, someone should call out the score every time a team scores. During the unit, tie games are won by the challenging team and lost by the defending champs. In a ladder tourney the tie goes to the team that moved up the ladder during the previous rotation. 6 Point Basketball Playing Area - A regulation basketball court is used along with the out of bounds area over the end line. The out of bounds area on one side line should be used. This reduces the out of bounds calls and keeps the game moving. Using only one out of bounds side of the court leaves the other side open to be used as a workout area for the team waiting to play. The game works best with 7-8 players maximum per team. Objective The object is to score more points than your opponent. Games will be 3-4 minutes in length. This time frame creates a chance for teams to catch up or end the game when it gets lopsided. There are two opportunities for scoring, a 6-point basket or a 3-point touchdown. The 6-point basket is equivalent to a three pointer in basketball. Throwing the ball to a player who is standing out of bounds over the end line by a teammate after they rebound a 6-point attempt, which scores the 3-point touchdown.
2 Movement Basketball rules are used for ball movement. Only two dribbles are allowed per ball possession. The only out of bounds should be one sideline thus allowing for the waiting team to work out. All other areas of the gym are in. If the ball is dropped in the end zone during a touchdown attempt, the ball must be thrown back in from outside the end zone. You may make more than one pass to score a touchdown as long as you maintain possession. Loose balls are allowed to be picked up by anyone providing they do not push, leave their feet, kick, scratch or bite. Defensive Play Regular basketball rules apply on defense. Any fouls result in free throws. If fouled in the act of shooting the free throw is worth 6 points. If not in the act of shooting it is worth 3 points. Missed free throws can be rebounded for touchdown tries. Loose balls can be picked up by anyone, but players cannot leave their feet or push. 1a. A girl must handle the ball before a shot is taken if they are not being incorporated into the game. 1b. If there are enough girls in the class, girls can pass to either gender but boys only pass to girls. 2. All offensive players pass the 1/2 court line before a 6 point shot is attempted. 3. All defensive players must be across the halfway point before the defense can rebound or steal the ball after the first shot. 4. A player must pass the ball twice in the backcourt before going to the frontcourt. Bop Ball Playing Area This game is played outdoors in teams of 4 or 5. The playing area should be a grid of 30 yards wide by 50 yards long. You will need an end zone of about 7 yards. For indoors, you can play full court on the small basketball courts. For both outdoor and indoor, have an end zone that is five yards deep. Seven players per side works best indoors. Objective In the outdoor version of the game, the objective is to bop the ball to a teammate standing in the end zone (touchdown). Bopping means to hit the ball in a volleyball underhand serve fashion (open handed). Open-handed form helps prevent long passes which are detrimental to the cardio game spirit. Ball Movement Players can only move parallel to their goal or away from their goal. Players must move and never stand still or they turn the ball over. A dropped ball is available for all to pick up. As in all games, pushing, shoving, leaving your feet, or biting is not allowed. A ball picked up from the ground in the end zone must be bopped out of the end zone and back in for a score to count or you can run out of the end zone and bop it back in. Defensive Play Players can block a bopped ball but can never knock it out of a player s hand. They can also intercept bopped balls or pick them up from the ground. Contact between players is not allowed.
3 1. You can also use other types of balls. You can use footballs, volleyballs, and even tennis balls. They all offer a new challenge. 2. It is encouraged that the boys involve the girls. The ball must be passed to one or two girls before the team can score. Girls can pass to either gender and boys can only pass to a girl. 3. You can use baskets. Hitting the backboard or rim equals one point and in the basket equals five points. No leaving feet allowed on shots. Cone Ball Playing Area The width of the floor on half a basketball court. Five players on a team is ideal. There should be no more than seven. Objective To score by rolling or throwing a volleyball at one of three cones at the back of a 5 yard end zone. Ball Movement Players can only basketball dribble two times. The ball must be passed forward using a bounce pass. Defensive Play Players must avoid contact and not knock the ball out of an opponent s hands. If a player knocks down a pass or dribble, the ball is a free ball. Any player can pick up the loose ball. No offensive or defensive player is allowed in the end zone to block a shot. If the ball hits a defender with a bounce pass while the defender is standing in the end zone the shooting team is awarded the score. Once the ball is shot at the cone the defense can retrieve the ball and start the counter attack while the scorer runs into the end zone to reset the hit cone. 1. The ball must be passed to one (or two) girls before the team can shoot at the cones. 2. Boys can pass only to girls and girls can pass to either gender. 3. If long passes are made, by passing the middle players, one or two passes should be made in the first half of the court before they can cross the half court. Capture the Cone Ball Playing Area The middle section of the fieldhouse. The game is best played with 8-12 on a team. Two corners of the playing area are FORTS where the cone is housed. The two other corners are HOME BASE (the opponent s fort is diagonal to your own home base). One volleyball is needed for every three players. You will also need spots to mark the fort and home base areas, pinnies and two cones. The game begins with an equal number of balls for each team in their home base. A whistle is blown and all players leave their home base and get involved in the game. Objective The objective of the game is to capture the opponent s cone and return it to your home base. You can also win the round by eliminating all opponents (confining them to their own home base). Once someone grabs the opponent s cone they cannot hand it off and must take it back to their home base without blockers in front of them. If they get tagged they must run back to the fort where they got the cone, put the cone back, and then run back to their
4 home base until they are saved. Players are not allowed to be holding a ball when they attempt to steal the cone from the fort. Ball Movement Players can run while in possession of the ball. They can run anywhere in the gym but can only go to the opponent s fort to get the cone and must get out within two seconds. They are only allowed into their own fort to retrieve a ball and must leave immediately. Tagging Opponents opponents are tagged and sent back to their home base when they are touched by the ball. The only legal way to tag someone is by throwing the ball SOFTLY using a two handed chest pass below the neck of the opponent. In the spirit of the game, anyone throwing the ball hard at an opponent will not be allowed to play. It is not necessary to throw hard since the person is tagged and must run to their base if the ball touches them or the ball they are holding. Catching the ball does not exempt you from being tagged. If an opponent is tagged they must immediately run to their home base and wait to be saved. Defensive Play Players should try to avoid being tagged by a ball. They should also help release teammates from the home base. This is done by shaking hands with a home bound teammate and dragging them into their own fort. Other teammates can attach on and form a chain of people being saved. Anyone saving their teammates or being saved cannot be tagged out by a ball. The line of people being saved or the savior cannot be holding any balls. Wall Ball Playing Area The width of the wood floor on half the basketball court in the fieldhouse or the small east to west basketball court in the upper gyms. 4-5 players on a team is ideal but no more than 7. Teams defend at one end and score at the other as in traditional games (basketball, soccer, etc.). Objective Teams score points by completing passes to teammates. The pass has to be bounced off the wall from within the launch zone. Ball Movement Players can only use a basketball type dribble in order to move with the ball. Two dribbles/possessions are allowed. Defensive Play After losing possession of the ball players should run to the defensive half and wait until the ball crosses half court before attempting to steal the ball. Defensive players must avoid contact fouls. Loose balls are free and should be picked up without pushing, kicking, etc. Any player can pick up the loose ball. Launch Zone This is the area of the court where balls may be thrown at the wall for teammates to catch and score. There are four of these zones on each court. The area is the length of the three second lane. The sidelines of the area are the three second lane and the court sideline (which is actually the wall upstairs). The top and bottom boundaries are the free throw line extended and the end line of the court. The three second lane is NOT included in the area. In order to score the ball needs to be passed into the launch zone (one cannot dribble into the launch zone) and then passed off the wall to a teammate on the opposite side of the three second lane extended up to half court.
5 Make It Take It Option When a team scores they maintain possession of the ball and can set up another scoring opportunity by working the ball back into the launch zone and throwing it at the wall again. If the ball is caught in the opposite launch zone they must first pass it out of the zone before being eligible to pass at the wall. Rebound Ball Playing Area The game is best played on a basketball court with three second lanes. It can be a full size court or a smaller one as long as the lane is marked. Five players to a team is ideal but no more than seven. The game is best played with a volleyball. Boundary lines are not used unless necessary for safety reasons. Objective You score by throwing the ball (banging it) against the backboard with enough force so that your teammate can catch the ball outside the three second lane. Even if another player from either team tips the ball, a point is scored if the banging team catches the ball before it hits the ground. You can t score by catching your own bang. Ball Movement Banging the ball from within the lane is acceptable and in fact is highly recommended. The ball carrier can advance the ball forward only by dribbling the ball. The ball carrier is allowed only two dribbles per possession. If you attempt to score at a basket and an opponent catches the bang they CAN bang if off the same backboard. In other words, the baskets are not the possession of either team. When a score is made (the banged ball is caught by a teammate outside the lane) the team that scored immediately starts to break to the other end to score again. Once the ball passes midcourt they can return to the original basket or continue going to the other basket. Once a team scores, they cannot attack the same basket until the ball passes half court. Defensive Play Players must avoid contact and not knock the ball out of their opponent s hands. If they knock down a pass, banged ball, or dribble, the ball is a free ball. Any player can pick up a loose ball without kicking, pushing, etc. The best defensive play is to match up with people receiving the bang (boxing out skill) and to try to prevent the ball from being banged. 1. The ball must be passed to one (or two) girls before a team can bang the ball. 2. Boys can pass only to girls and girls can pass to either gender. Grading See activity unit breakdown, fitness grade breakdown, and final grading scale under NC/SC Grading Policy at the front of the Study Guide. Technique Description/Skill Tests Specific skills for activity units are taught on a regular basis. In some units, demonstrated knowledge of skills may be obtained through some form of skill testing. This testing is not outcome based.
