1 Bee 14 th May 2014 Issue No. 6 Dear Parents and Caregivers Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you have all had an enjoyable holiday and managed to spend some family time together. We have a very busy and full programme planned for this term so keep reading the newsletters and checking out the school website to help keep you informed. WELCOME We welcome Jayden Stock who joins big sister Jessica. OFFICE ADMINISTRATION JOB I would like to congratulate Nicky Harrison on her appointment to the Office Administration job. Nicky has previously been working in the school as a Teacher Aide and is now taking on the new role in our School Office. Nicky will start on Friday 16 th May. FUNDRAISING NEWS The Easter Raffle was a huge success last term and our fundraising team would like to thank the community for such generous donations of grocery items and support with buying of the tickets. This one event has raised over $1800. Please keep an eye out for the new fundraising barometer showing our target for the year and what we are raising funds for. WHATS COMING UP THIS TERM? Please put into your diaries the following: Scrap Metal Drive Saturday, 24 th May 8am-10am-more information has been delivered to your mailbox. Bingo Night this term is Saturday, 28 th June 7pm in the school hall-more information to follow soon. Entertainment Books are available for purchase through the school office. Pizza lunch day Wednesday, 18 th June-more information to follow soon. Thank you all once again for your on-going support. TERM TWO SCHOOL WIDE VALUE This term the school value is Integrity. The children will be talking about what this word/value means to us at Kelson School. Once again a special award will be given out at each fortnightly assembly to children displaying this value. These children will then have a morning tea with Mrs Pemberton. YEAR 6 CAMP During the last week of Term 1 the Year 6 children spent four fun filled, action packed days at Camp Akatarawa. I was lucky enough to spend a day at camp and was very impressed with the range of activities and the give it a go attitude all of the children displayed. Thank you to Mrs Murray, Mr Evans and all of the wonderful parent volunteers who made the camp such a memorable event for the children. BOOKCLUB Bookclub Issue 3 closes Wednesday, 26 May 2014.

2 AFL In the school holidays a group of children were involved in playing their own AFL match at half time during the Saint Kilda Saints game held at Westpac Trust Stadium. Thank you to Mr Evans for organising this and all of the parents who brought their children into the game. It was fantastic seeing Kelson School represented out on the pitch at half time. SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY The school Cross Country is coming up on Friday 23 rd May. The children will be training for this over the next couple of weeks. We will be running the event differently this year, starting at 11am and finishing the running by 1pm. All races will be run at the school. We will then have our lunch break from 1-2pm and parents are most welcome to stay and have lunch with their children, followed by a prize giving in the hall from 2pm onwards. The race times are approximations: Year 3 boys 11am, Year 3 girls 11.10am, Year 6 boys 11.20am, Year 6 girls 11.30am, Year 5 boys 11.40am, Year 5 boys 11.50am, Year 4 boys 12.00pm, Year 4 girls 12.10pm, Year 2 boys 12.20pm, Year 2 girls 12.30pm Year 1 boys 12.40pm, Year 1 girls 12.50pm. If you are available to help out on the day with marshalling, please let the school office know, or just turn up on the day as any extra help would be greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you there. SPORTS NEWS We have three Netball teams and one Water polo team playing this term for the school. We also have a number of Kelson School children playing Hockey together. We will aim to have regular updates in our newsletters about how our sports teams are going. LOST PROPERTY We have a lot of lost property left over from last term. The lost property bin is now located next to the school office. LOST SKATEBOARD A skateboard was left at school in the second to last week of Term 1. It is blue with yellow wheels. If anyone has seen it could they please inform the school office.

3 SCHOOL WIDE TE REO Each fortnight the children across the school will be introduced to a new Te Reo skill. Here is our second one:

4 STUDENT HONOURS Congratulations to Philip Fatialofa who won three events out of four in his grade and came 2 nd in the fourth event in the Smokefree Karate Primary and Secondary Schools Tournament. PAST STUDENT HONOURS Tim Robertson is a nominee in the HuttNews/Hutt City Sports Awards for Orienteering. He is a hugely gifted all round athlete and he achieved third place in the 2013 World Junior Orienteering Championship. Well Done Tim. Nicholas Kovacev of Hutt Valley High School Trio recently played piano at a concert held at the Little Theatre in Lower Hutt. This was on Little Theatre s new Black Beauty a Steinway Model C piano. What a talent Nicholas. EASTER RAFFLE The Easter Raffle was drawn by Constable Blue and the lucky winners were: 1 st - Braydon Warren - No nd - Tania Love - No rd - Graham White - No NETBALL NEWS JUNIOR PROGRAMMES 2014 In 2014, Netball Hutt Valley is offering a range of programmes to develop young players from Years 1-8. These courses are run by experienced facilitators and cater to all experience levels. Our courses offer juniors the opportunity to explore netball and learn skills in a fun and positive environment. Both girls and boys are welcome. Junior Netball (formerly Fun Ferns) starts on 10 May at the Walter Nash Stadium. This is for year 1-4 children who are not yet playing in a netball team. This 11 week programme costs $50 and parents can register their children online at May Netball Coaching for year 1-8 after school series this is a 6 week netball programme held at the Walter Nash Stadium. Suitable for first timers to potential representative players. Cost $75 or $70 with sibling discount. Tuesdays pm starting 6 May. Register online by 1 May. July Holiday Programme each day in the first week of the school holidays 7-11 July at the Walter Nash Stadium. Years 1-4 from , Years 5-6 from 11-1, Years 7-8 from Registrations close 3 July $75 Years 1-4, $100 Years 5-8 and sibling discounts available.
