Changes to the GCSE awarding system As you are probably aware the government has recently announced radical changes to the structure and assessment of GCSEs. We are moving away from the familiar system of A*-G grades to a new system of grading with numbers 9-1. In addition to the changes to the structure of the GCSEs, the government is also raising the expectation of the standard of GCSE that will be considered as good pass from a C to a new grade 5.
2.9 % students Danger Area 5.7 % students 5.7 % students 15 % students 17 % students Grade 5 is the New Grade C 19 % students Danger Area The New KS4 Grade Structure A* 3.1% students A 11.5% students B 22.4% students C 28.4% students D E F G
Ofqual tells us that Broadly the same number of students will achieve a grade 4 and above as currently achieve a grade C and above. Broadly the same number of students will achieve a grade 7 and above as currently achieve a grade A and above. The bottom of grade 1 will be aligned with the bottom of grade G. A grade 5 will be awarded to the top third of students gaining the equivalent of a grade C or bottom third of a grade B. The Department for Education has decided that grade 5 will be a good pass.

Our focus One of our priorities is to ensure that students gain Maths and English at a grade 5 or better as this is required for all L3 study. Progress is our main concern for your son/daughter. Whether they are predicted 9s or 4s, the more progress they make the more likely they are to achieve the top grades.
Typical results at GCSE level mean All 9/8 - Access to medicine and Russell group universities. 9/8 grades in a GCSE subject capable of getting an A grade at A Level All 8/7 grades access to three A Level courses in academic subjects All 7/6 grades including higher grades in chosen subjects access to three A Level courses or a L3 Vocational course. All 6/5 grades including Maths and English Access to a L3 Vocational course
Tiering In many subjects, students are placed in sets based on their ability. Students in top sets are taught and entered for GCSE higher-tier papers, where there is a tier. Students who are less able are entered for GCSE foundation papers where a grade C/ grade 5 is the highest grade achievable
Assessment GCSE assessments are based on the assumption that everything that should be taught should be assessed
Assessment The Key Stage 4 curriculum is broken down into 4 parts. 4 (Year 10 September 2016 December 2016) 3 ( Year 10 January 2017 to April 2017) 2 (Year 10 April 2017 July 2017) 1 (Year 11 September 2017 December 2017) January 2018 Courses are completed and revision and preparation for examinations begins.
Heads of Department
The new GCSE English: key facts At the end of year 11 your child will have 4 exams; the exams range from 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes in length 2 English Literature and 2 English Language - everyone does both No tiers No texts allowed in the exams students need to learn quotations We have paid for every student to have their own copies of the texts No Controlled Assessment folders (coursework), so 40% is now no longer guaranteed;100% of the final result will depend on the exams Two lever arch folders per student Homework, attendance, attitude The exams are much harder than anything we have ever seen before at GCSE
GCSE (9-1) Mathematics Three year course (year 9 to year 11) Students take either Higher or Foundation tier Three exams at the end of the course 1 Non-calculator paper and 2 Calculator papers (1 hour 30 each)
What is being assessed?
New types of questions Problem solving Old style New style
GCSE (1-9) Mathematics at BDA - Support Students in sets according to ability to help support them best Students have regular homework to consolidate their learning Students who are identified as struggling have opportunity for intervention sessions (before and after-school) Regular assessments help the department identify areas of difficulty
GCSE Mathematics at BDA - Expectations Students need to complete their homework fully and on time (Set for Year 10 on Friday s, so they will always have homework every weekend) Students need to engage and work in class (if a student is disrupting their own or others learning then they will be removed to the consequence room) Students need to revise independently for assessments (First year-group one: 19 th October) Important to attend intervention sessions if offered
Ark Burlington Danes Academy Science Faculty Science at Key Stage 4 1. GCSE changes 2. Resources 3. Post-16 and Sixth Form requirements Last year s results (A*-C): Double Science (Core and Additional Science): 68% Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics): 98% Controlled assessments: 95%
Ark Burlington Danes Academy Science Faculty Science at Key Stage 4 HOWEVER The format of the new Science GCSEs is changing drastically. 1) There is no more Double Science - where pupils sit one set of exams in Core and one set of exams in Additional. 2) There are no more ISA Controlled Assessments (coursework).
Ark Burlington Danes Academy Science Faculty Science at Key Stage 4 There are now two options: 1) Separate Sciences THE NEW DEAL: Set Tier 10 Bi/Ch/Ph 1 Higher tier; Top set 10 Bi/Ch/Ph 2 Higher tier; Second set Pupils in these two sets will sit exams in Biology (x2), Chemistry (x2) and Physics (x2) separately. All exams will be 1h 45m long. Throughout the two years pupils will complete 28 required practicals. They may be asked questions on the theory, equipment and set-up, method, safety, or conclusions of these practicals in their exams.
Ark Burlington Danes Academy Science Faculty Science at Key Stage 4 THE NEW DEAL: There are now two options: 2) Combined Science 10 Sc 1 Higher Tier 10 Sc 2 Foundation Tier 10 Sc 3 Foundation Tier 10 Sc 4 Foundation Tier 10 Sc 5 Foundation Tier Pupils in these sets will sit exams in Biology (x2), Chemistry (x2) and Physics (x2). All exams will be 1h 15m long. Their results from these will be used to award pupils a combined grade (e.g. 5-6, or 4-5, or 7-7). Throughout the two years pupils will complete 21 required practicals. They may be asked questions on the theory, equipment and set-up, method, safety, or conclusions of these practicals in their exams.
Ark Burlington Danes Academy Science Faculty KS4 Resources
Ark Burlington Danes Academy Science Faculty Post-16: progressing to A-level Separate Sciences: Students must achieve a minimum of a grade 6s in all sciences, with a grade 7 in the chosen subject to take the course. Combined Science: Students must achieve a minimum of grade 7-7 in their Combined Science GCSE. There are no exceptions. These strict requirements are due to the gap between the AS subject matter and the content studied in the GCSE courses. I want to study medicine I want to study engineering/physics/biochemistry It may seem early to consider, but if you are wanting to study medicine or another top level science degree at university then anything less than grades 7/8/9 will not be sufficient. The work that happens over the next two years will directly affect your options post-16 and beyond.
