1 Jo Daviess Carroll Career and Technical Education Academy Early Childhood Education Course Name: Practicum Course Description: This course emphasizes the practical application of early childhood education principles and theories. Students will work with preschool age children at Little Learners Academy, a community preschool. The student will be under the direction of the ECE teacher. Students will be given the opportunity to plan direct activities. Student learning activities include learning the various types of jobs within Early Childhood, instructional strategies, behavior management, professionalism and communication skills with other professionals and families. 2 Outcome: #1 The competent early childhood student will understand conceptually sound and meaningful curriculum for children from birth to grade three. a. Students will plan, implement, and evaluate integrated, conceptually sound and meaningful curriculum for children from birth to grade three. b. Students will understand problem-solving approaches that children may use to investigate and understand mathematical content. c. Students will promote and encourage children's innate curiosity about objects and events, respect for living organisms and appreciation of the environment. Outcome #2 The competent early childhood student will understand ways in which physical, social and emotional well-being of children enhances enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. a. Students will understand the phases, stages, and continuity of motor development. b. Students will understand the relationship between resolution of conflicts and health and well-being. c. Students will provide opportunities for children to explore movement activities in a variety of contexts.

3 Outcome #3 The competent early childhood student will understand the concepts, techniques, and materials of visual art, the cultural dimensions of the visual arts, and the interrelationships between the visual arts and other art forms. a. Student will understand the elements of visual art, music, dance, and drama. b. Students will provide opportunities for children to explore media, technique, and processes for communicating ideas, experiences and stories. c. Students will provide opportunities for children to explore music in a variety of contexts and communicate ideas, experiences and stories through music. Outcome #4 The competent early childhood student will understand how to plan developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum. a. Student will demonstrate sensitivity to differences in family structures and social and cultural background. b. Students will create, select, evaluate, and incorporate developmentally and culturally appropriate materials and equipment tin to the instructional plans.

4 Outcome #5 The competent early childhood student will understand the rationale for a variety of instructional strategies, including play, small group projects, open-ended questioning, group discussion, problem-solving, cooperative learning and inquiry experiences for children birth through grade three. a. Students will understand how to enhance the intellectual curiosity, problemsolving and decision-making of children from birth to age three. b. Students will implement and evaluate instructional strategies that promote the development of intellectual curiosity, problem-solving, and decision-making for children from birth to grade three. c. Students will apply an understanding of developmentally appropriate physical settings, schedules, routines, and transitions when promoting the development and learning of children from birth through grade three. Outcome # 6 The competent early childhood student will understand and will demonstrate competence in working with peers and supervisors. a. Students will be able to establish and maintains positive, collaborative relationships with colleagues, other professionals, and families and works effectively as a member of professionals, and families and works effectively as a member of a professional team. b. Students will identify and use community resources to enhance children's development, learning and well-being and to explore career opportunities. c. Students will understand school policies and procedures.

5 Outcome#7 The competent early childhood student will understand the unique characteristics of education as a profession and the ethical considerations that apply to educators. a. Students will understand conditions of children, families and professionals; current issues and trends; legal issues; legislation and other public policies affecting children, families and programs for young children; and the early childhood profession. b. Students will be able to recognize signs of emotional distress, child abuse and neglect in young children and understand the responsibility and procedures for reporting known or suspected abuse or neglect to appropriate authorities. c. Students will follow school policy and procedure, respecting the boundaries of professional responsibilities, when working with students, colleagues and families.
