2 COURSE SYLLABUS HIUS 435 THE WORLD OF JONATHAN EDWARDS COURSE DESCRIPTION The course examines the life and thought of Jonathan Edwards, situates Edwards in the 18th century American and transatlantic worlds, and traces his impact on American evangelicalism. RATIONALE Jonathan Edwards is one of the greatest thinkers in American history, and was a key influence on the Great Awakening and the American evangelical tradition. The course covers the transformation of American colonial history, emphasizes religious themes, evaluates biblical worldview principles, and traces changes in the Edwards historiography. The course is interdisciplinary, as Edwards was a diverse thinker, and is evaluated from historical, religious, social, philosophical, scientific, and literary perspectives. I. 3 IV. MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Identify the major works and events in the life of Jonathan Edwards. B. Describe the influence of Jonathan Edwards on the American evangelical tradition. C. Evaluate interpretative and historiographical approaches in American religious history. D. Apply biblical principles to the problems and issues of American history. E. Demonstrate university competencies in research, writing, and documentary analysis. V. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Preliminary Quiz The Preliminary Quiz is an assessment instrument to measure the student s knowledge of Eighteenth Century Colonial America (the world of Jonathan Edwards). The quiz tests background knowledge, so there is nothing to prepare for. Poor performance will not affect the student s final grade. The quiz contains 40 multiple-choice questions and has a 30-minute time limit; there is a penalty for exceeding the time limit. D. Discussion Board Forums (5) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a video thread for the first 4 forums in response to the provided topic for each forum, and Discussion Board Forum 5 is based on the research done for your final project. Directed readings for these Discussion Board Forums are listed in the Reading & Study folders for the assigned modules/weeks. Each video thread must be approximately 3 minutes. (2:30 minutes minimum; 4:30 minutes maximum), must be in video format, and must be submitted to the assigned Discussion Board Forum. Each video thread must demonstrate course-related knowledge, incorporate required reading, and make reference to at least 2 scholarly sources. In addition to the video or video link, the student s thread must include an abstract (4 5 sentences) and a list of 3 sources. In addition to the video thread, the student will reply to at least 3 other classmates video threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words. Page 2 of 4

4 E. Essays (2) The student will write 2 brief essays of at least 3 pages each on an assigned primary source or scholarly article. He or she will do additional background research on the document, figure, or event, identifying 4 other primary or scholarly sources. The essay must include at least 5 footnotes and a bibliography containing at least 5 sources in current Turabian format. This assignment assesses historical research, documentary analysis, writing ability, and historical citation standards. F. Prospectus The student will submit a written research prospectus for the final Research Paper. The Prospectus must have a cover page and at least 2 pages of narrative, describing the significance of the project, available sources for research, a suggested outline for development, and an anticipated thesis. The Prospectus must include, a bibliography of at least 10 sources in current Turabian format. Sources must include primary sources and material from JSTOR and the Charles Evans Early American Imprints series. G. Research Paper The Research Paper builds on the work of the Prospectus and the Annotated Bibliography. The paper must be pages, with 15 reference footnotes and 15 sources. The footnotes and bibliography must be in current Turabian format. In addition to the paper, the student will submit a video presentation of his or her research as a Discussion Board Forum thread. H. Textbook Quizzes (7) Each Textbook Quiz will cover the textbook readings listed in the Reading & Study material for the module/week in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice questions and 1 essay question, and have a 30-minute time limit. I. Presentation Quizzes (7) Each Presentation Quiz will cover the video presentations (lectures and interviews) listed in the Reading & Study material for the module/week in which it is assigned. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1.Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2.Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a % deduction. 3.Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4.Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
