Introduction This white paper instructs users on hardware requirements, installations procedures, tuning and requirements for setting up a dbwatch 11.0 Server on Linux. One of the key benefits with dbwatch is the ability to monitor many databases regardless of platform or database type. Any combination of supported database types or platforms can be used in the same database server. For large environments it is possible to use more than one dbwatch Server and the client software supports connecting to multiple dbwatch Servers from the same interface. This setup is tested for monitoring up to 500 database instances from one server when memory is tuned. 2
Document changes V1.0: V1.1: V1.2: V1.3: Initial version of this document Changes to requirements; setting minimum requirements Correcting url changes Correcting ulimit p to ulimit n and added info about memory tuning 3

dbwatch 11.0 supports Active Directory integration. You can choose to either use dbwatch for your authentication or Active Directory. If you use dbwatch, you need to set a password for the admin user, which is the default administration user in dbwatch. You can also change to Active Directory authentication at a later stage. This is described on our wiki pages ( ). 56

When the installation successfully completes you get this informational window. Click Next. 59
You have now completed the installation wizard. We will start the Click Finish to close the window. 60
Setup dbwatch after install Configure automatic startup and shutdown One way to configure automatic startup and shutdown that is quite universal for all Linux distributions are by using startup scripts. There is a startup script provided as dbwatchservice10.0, but this runs as the user that starts the script, and in case of automatic startup, this normally is root. We don t recommend running dbwatch as the root user, and as we have installed dbwatch as user dbwatch, we have made a startup script that will change user as it starts dbwatch. #! /bin/sh # chkconfig: #################################### # Start og Stop script for dbwatch 11 #################################### # # # Config DBW_USER=dbwatch DBW_PATH=/usr/local/dbWatch/11.0 case "$1" in start) esac exit 0 echo "start" su - $DBW_USER -c "$DBW_PATH/dbWatchService11.0 start" ;; stop) echo "stop" su - $DBW_USER -c "$DBW_PATH/dbWatchService11.0 stop" ;; restart) echo "restart" su - $DBW_USER -c "$DBW_PATH/dbWatchService11.0 stop" su - $DBW_USER -c "$DBW_PATH/dbWatchService11.0 start" ;; *) echo "Usage: $0 {start stop restart }" exit 1 61
This script needs to be placed in /etc/init.d directory as dbwatch11. Then link it in at the appropriate runlevel. You can find the current runlevel by issuing the runlevel command in your prompt. We are running on runlevel 5, and we place a startup and shutdown link to our script. ln s /etc/init.d/dbwatch11 /etc/rc5.d/s99dbwatch11 ln s /etc/init.d/dbwatch11 /etc/rc0.d/k01dbwatch11 ln s /etc/init.d/dbwatch11 /etc/rc6.d/k01dbwatch11 chmod a+x /etc/init.d/dbwatch11 62
Adjust Java memory size for large environments dbwatch is by default limited to use maximum 512 MB memory on the server. This is not enough for the monitoring of an environment with as many as 500 instances. Therefore a small change in the startup files are required. We recommend configuring dbwatch to be allowed to use 2048 MB memory on the server. A parameter to the startup specifying max memory usage is by default set to "-Xmx512m" and need to be set to "-Xmx2048m". This must be changed once in dbwatchconsole11.0 and three times in dbwatchservice11.0. These files are located in the root of the dbwatch installation, by default /usr/local/dbwatch/11.0. You can use the editor you prefer, for instance vi. 63
Tuning task-executor-max-concurrent-instances In server_configuration.xml there are several parameters governing the behavior of dbwatch. By default the task-executor-max-concurrent-instances is set to 30. <task-executor-max-concurrent-instances>30</task-executor-max-concurrent-instances> This setting controls the internal timing mechanism in dbwatch that controls scheduling. This mechanism will run every 10 second to verify that everything that should be run, has been run. This setting can be tuned up if you experience problems with tasks not being run, and down if you have problems with high thread and memory usage. If this number is set to 30 when you have 500 instances, the tasks that are scheduled to run every minute will run every 3 minutes approximately. We recommend this setting to be the number of instances being monitored / 6. So for a full 500 instance setup, a setting of 85 will be correct. 64
