1 Riverview Elementary School SCHOOL-WIDE BEHAVIOR PLAN Trust and Respect: We have to explicitly teach the behaviors we want to see and then trust that students are capable of achieving them. It is important to have high expectations for students otherwise they will never grow! Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports It is our belief that students come to school to learn. We believe that it is the responsibility of our staff, parents, and students to ensure a safe, harmonious and orderly learning climate. In that spirit, and in line with the philosophical approach endorsed by the VDOE of creating an Effective School-Wide Discipline plan (ESD), the staff at Riverview Elementary School has embraced Positive Behavior as the main structure for dealing with student discipline and school-wide management. Effective School-wide Discipline/Positive Behavior is a systems-based approach for establishing the social, cultural, and behavioral supports needed for schools to be effective learning environments for all students. The systems present in effective schools include the following: Prevention Define and teach positive social expectations Acknowledge positive behavior Arrange consistent consequences for problem behavior On-going collection, analysis and use of data in decision-making Three-tier continuum of services and interventions Administrator Leadership Team-Based Implementation Through a team-based approach, the staff at Riverview Elementary School has created a proactive system to prevent student management and discipline problems by using school-wide data to predict problems and make informed decisions thereby increasing the likelihood of appropriate behaviors. 2 The 3R s at Riverview Elementary School The Leadership Team at Riverview has established a set of expectations per our behavior matrix for common areas within the school environment. Those common areas include the cafeteria, the hallways, the playground, and the restrooms. The matrices are included below. Teachers are expected to teach, practice, model and reinforce these expectations each year during the first few days and then as needed throughout the year. Posters are on display throughout the school and in these common areas, and all staff are expected to praise and reinforce desired behaviors whenever it is present. Cafeteria Wait your turn in lunch line Raise hand for assistance Treat others with kindness Use polite manners Voice Level 3 or below Keep your lunch in your personal space Clean up after yourself Both knees under the table with feet on the floor Hand trays to custodian one at a time in a line Hallway Get all utensils, milk, etc. when going through lunch line Walk in line, hands down, facing forward Voice level 0 when in line arriving and leaving Walk with Eyes Forward Straight Lines Hands by your side Stay in personal space Voice Level 0/1 Remain in classroom until permitted to leave Walk one step at a time Playground Walk directly to destination Stay to the right Take turns with equipment Follow rules Include everyone Voice Level 4 while outside Line up immediately on teacher signal Gather all materials and equipment Walk to and from playground Stay within playground boundaries Riverview Elementary School Revised October 2015 Page 2
3 Restroom Give others privacy Voice Level 0/1 Flush toilet after use Return to classroom Report problems to an adult Wash hands Keep water in sink Keep feet on the floor Bus Obey instructions of driver and adults on duty Face front, hands to yourself, feet forward Use appropriate language Voice level 2 or below Walk directly to your bus Keep all belongings in your lap Keep backpack closed No food or drink consumed on the bus Classroom Be on time at your stop Have belongings ready to load/unload the bus Be seated when bus is moving All classrooms at Riverview will use the following clip chart for monitoring daily behavior. It is expected that each child come to school ready to learn. 4 Common Language At Riverview Elementary School, we use a common language to reinforce desired behaviors. All behaviors are clearly taught and reinforced using the matrices and language found therein. Additionally, we use a common voice level protocol to identify volume levels with clear definitions that are easily measured. These common voice levels are expected to be used in classrooms as well and may vary depending on the activity. For example, students may use a Level 1 to work with a partner but need a voice Level 3 to present a book report to the class. Voice Level 0 Voice Level 1 Voice Level 2 Voice Level 3 Voice Level 4 Voice Level 5 Silent- No one is talking. Whisper-Only 1 person can hear you. Partner- Small group work, only the group can hear you. Group-Normal conversation voice. Outside voice- Playground voice, never used inside. Emergency Note that a Voice Level 4 is only to be used outdoors during play, PE or recess. Riverview Elementary School Revised October 2015 Page 4
5 POSITIVE RECOGNITION At Riverview Elementary School, we believe all students, staff and parents or guardians should feel safe, comfortable and respected. We are all committed to providing the most effective learning environment possible and maximizing instructional time for all students. While at school we want our students to learn, be successful and feel happy. Our teachers and staff will provide positive reinforcement through individual classroom recognition activities as well as, whole school incentive programs. The administration will also recognize students for their outstanding work, behavior, and efforts. Student Recognition This list is not meant to be all-inclusive or to exclude other various ways of recognizing students for making positive choices and displaying appropriate behavior. Panther Pride Paws (Daily/weekly) Every staff member will have paws that they can give to students anytime they are engaged in positive behaviors. When students receive a paw, they can write their name on the paw and drop it into the Paw box located in their classroom. Each Friday during morning announcements six paws will be drawn and the students will be recognized. Leadership team members need to make sure grade level paws are turned into the office paw bucket by Thursday afternoon. Panther Pride Table(daily) -The PTO and teachers have designated a special table in the cafeteria where students who are displaying appropriate behaviors may sit if recognized by a monitor. The appropriate behaviors being recognized are ONLY those expected in the cafeteria. This table is a special privilege for students displaying positive expected behaviors in the cafeteria only. Special Awards (each 9 weeks) Recognition from Encore classes (Art, Music, PE, and Library) for students from each homeroom who demonstrate positive character traits or special talents in these classes. Helping Hands Award (each 9 weeks) - Recognition of the class who showed the most participation in SCA events. Riverview Elementary School Revised October 2015 Page 5
6 CHARACTER EDUCATION PROGRAM Throughout the school year, the staff will engage students in focused, thematic lessons and messages to target specific character traits as defined below. These messages will be modeled in classrooms, reflected through our school wide behavior plan protocols and procedures, part of the morning messages read during announcements, and frequently delivered through classroom guidance lessons as appropriate. First 9 weeks Responsibility: I will cooperate and follow directions. Students will complete work on time, work quietly and listen, work hard, do their best, cooperate with classmates, obey school rules, make a positive difference at school each day. Fairness: I will treat others the way I want to be treated. Students will use good manners, do their best, take turns and share, be open minded, and listen to others. Second 9 weeks Trustworthiness: I will respect all property. Students will: be honest and tell the truth, do their own work, respect the school building and grounds. Third 9 weeks Respect: I will show respect to every adult. Students will respect authority, work hard, listen, cooperate, say Thank you, and Please, and do what is expected. Kindness: I will be kind to myself and others. Students will be kind to others by being caring, compassionate, patient and forgiving and will be tolerant of each other s differences. Fourth 9 weeks Citizenship: I will take responsibility for their own actions, use self-control,think before acting, and have an I can attitude. Students will show patriotism, respect for the American Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance, concern for the common good, respect for authority and the law, and community-mindedness. Class Meetings Create a Caring Community of Learners : Homeroom teachers are encouraged to schedule class meetings on a regular basis to build a sense of community and to help students learn to problem solve. Class meetings allow students to: Build teamwork Express different ideas and opinions in a respectful manner See things from a different perspective State a problem without assigning blame Reflect and extend their thinking Resolve conflicts peacefully Riverview Elementary School Revised October 2015 Page 6
