4 Regional Advanced Practice To enable a skilled and knowledgeable Advanced Practice Workforce to be used effectively to enhance the capacity of the existing health workforce to ensure a quality service for patients now and in the future Curriculum theme- All HEI s invited via Deans of Schools to a subgroup to standardise curriculum. HEI s unable to attend, followed up by HEE WM

6 Initial HEI Discussions HEI s agreed to collaborate and saw this as an opportunity to share best practice. All documentation related to MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner Programmes (Modules, titles, pathways, costing to be openly shared for comparison/mapping and added to the Scoping exercise undertaken by HEWM. A work shop was planned to map practitioner feedback on competencies to future curriculum development. Key people from organisations were identified to lead for each HEI, no more than 2 Specialist areas and pilot projects were highlighted and identified; NMP fast track pilots, Multi-professional emergency care, to include in mapping Agreement that this would be a multi-professional approach Agreement to support APL discussions through internal regulations of each HEI

8 HEI Workshop outcomes All HEI delegates agreed to look at timescales for taking amendments to programmes through their quality assurance procedures. Course details: Delegates agreed Clinical Masters Programmes across the West Midlands should be named: MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and should be multi-professional. The first 60 credits of the programme must include clinical Health assessment and clinical decision making and if used as an exit point would be called: Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making- 60 M level credits. Taught days ranged from for a 40 credit module and approximately 20 days for the full PGCERT For the clinical component it was agreed to standardise a minimum of 78 hours in line with NMP programmes. A full mapping of indicative content and assessments across delegates from HEI s was undertaken and agreed. Non Medical Prescribing courses are already standardised and therefore mapping not required.
9 Indicative content for PGCERT Applied anatomy and physiology of various body systems Process of investigation and interpretation of diagnostics (rationale) History taking, consultation and assessment skills and tools Formulating differential diagnosis and appropriate treatment plans Contextualising clinical judgement, incorporating evidence based practice across the life span Professional, legal and ethical issues including consent Critique and evaluate service delivery, audit and research to monitor patient outcomes Produce high quality clinical records reflecting critical thinking and decision making Critical thinking and reflective practice Leadership skills and advanced scholarship for innovative practice developments Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Promotion and Health Policy Collaboration and partnership with users, carers and other agencies (client centred) Diversity, discrimination and multi-cultural Quality Governance Communication
10 Assessments for PGCERT Reflective journal Top to toe assessment (45 minutes) 4 stage OSCE Written assignment (3,000 to 4,000 words) OSCE in practice Physical examination Write-up Portfolio to include case histories
11 MSC Advanced Clinical Practice For practitioners who exit programmes at at 120 credits: Delegates were unable to decide whether this should be : Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Clinical Practice. The main theme for Advanced Clinical Practitioners was the completion of a full award which included: Physical Health assessment Prescribing (where legally allowed) Leadership skills Evidence based practice/research and NHS service/quality Improvement. All HEI s involved in the curriculum theme were able to identify these themes in the programmes
12 3 year Part time Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice The Masters course name is MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice across any HEI in the West Midlands and is a programme of 180 credits aimed at multi-professional groups. Year 1 60 Credits. Must include Clinical Health Assessment & Clinical Decision Making Year 2 60 Credits. Must include Prescribing (as appropriate), Research Methods & Leadership Year 3 60 Credits. Dissertation Exit Point: Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Health Assessment & Clinical Decision Making Exit Point: Post Graduate Diploma in Advancing Clinical Practice Exit Point: MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice
13 Collaborative developments HEWM agreed funding for a 3 year period Practice Partners nominated /identified candidates for selection onto programme considering workforce strategy and a commitment to support mentorship and training time. Applicants were encouraged from across Allied Health.. Universities informed of student numbers from HEWM Database established to monitor progression and retention of students HEI s checked entrance eligibility and Recognition of Prior learning All HEI s involved commenced new cohorts in September 2015 and have just started a second cohort January 2016) HEI s continue to meet to discuss Quality Assurance, Educational developments and Quality Improvement initiatives
14 Additional developments/discussion points Quality assurance across programmes through a panel of assessors to provide cross integration- will be led by HEWM Support for mentorship Advanced Practice revalidation for mentors. Entry requirement: First degree and minimum 2/3 years experience. Top Up arrangement for existing practitioners with out a full MSc.
