1 CANDIDATE COACHING CHECKLIST Coach: Candidate: Date & Initial: 1 Degree Proficiency 2 Degree Proficiency 3 Degree Proficiency 2016 Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Washington Masonic Research and Education Committee
2 To the Master As a candidate begins his journey into Masonry, let us take a personal interest in him. Let us cultivate the new Brother in a spirit of fellowship, friendship, unity, and peace. He is uncertain. He is a neophyte. He needs strength and, most of all, guidance. He needs understanding and support. His future successes are in his present education, orientation, and acceptance. Those who are assigned to assist him in the memory work should also help in communicating, within the limits of each Degree, the sound educational process of understanding, knowledge, and awareness. The memory work is important, but it can only be effective if it is accompanied by understanding. It is not enough to memorize. We must relate, educate, stimulate, and concentrate on his awareness, understanding, and illumination. General Information In this chain of instruction, the most intimate contact the candidate his with his Lodge is his coach. The candidate s view of Masonry as a strong, virile, and worthwhile institution is more likely to be gained through an evening spent with a personable and knowledgeable coach than through the actual Conferral of the Degrees themselves. It is the coach who makes these things come alive. It is the coach who, by answering questions and discussing ideas, leads the candidate to new concepts and new interest in the scope of Freemasonry. To be a successful coach, the Brother must be thoroughly versed in the ritual of the Degrees. He should be familiar with the history of his Lodge and be generally knowledgeable in the history and symbolism of Masonry. You have been assigned as the coach because of your proficiency in the ritual and interest in Freemasonry. The purpose of this document is to aid you in presenting to the candidate the basic curriculum necessary for his Masonic education and understanding.
3 Procedure The establishment of a rapport with your candidate will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your Masonic career. Remember, be courteous, patient, and understanding. Each learning session should begin with a discussion of some phase of the Degree, as covered in the outline, followed by the Posting Lecture memory work, and concluded with a question period by the candidate. The coach should mark off those subjects covered to assure that all of the topics have been presented. All subjects listed are to be found in the New Candidate Education Program book. The candidate must learn the appropriate Posting Lecture of each Degree before advancement, but should also be instructed in all of the signs, words, and proper steps for each Degree. This pamphlet is presented to the Coach when he is assigned to a candidate by the Worshipful Master. The coach should date the front page as the Degree is completed. When the candidate has proven proficient on all three Degrees, the booklet should be given to the candidate for his reference. If the coach changes for any reason, the pamphlet should be passed on to the new coach.
