UCC is also home to a number of major national research institutes and centers that have been established over the past few years. Some examples include Tyndall National Institute, Biosciences Institute, Environmental Research Institute, Informatics Research Centre, Postgraduate Research Library, and Bioinnovation Centre. The University is made up of four colleges: Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences; Business and Law; Science, Engineering and Food Science; and Medicine and Health. Program Information UCC will be introducing semester courses in 2014/15 which may result in some changes to the curriculum. Information on any changes will be updated here in Spring The MA encourages a multidisciplinary approach to digital arts and humanities in a creative and scholarly atmosphere. The course will give students an introduction into how digital tools and methods can be used in arts and humanities research, combining theory and practice. Course Outline Students take 90 credits as follows: Part 1 Core Modules DH6001 Communities of Practice in Digital Scholarship (5 credits) DH6003 Digital Humanities Institute (5 credits) DH6004 Conceptual Introduction to Digital Arts and Humanities (5 credits) DH6005 History and Theory of Digital Arts (5 credits) DH6010 Humanities and New Technologies: Tools and Methodologies (5 credits) Elective Modules Students select 20 credits from the following modules: CS6102 Graphics and Graphic Design (5 credits)
2 CS6103 Audio and Sound Engineering (5 credits) CS6104 Digital Video Capture and Packaging (5 credits) CS6117 Audio Processing (5 credits) DH6006 Teaching and Learning in Digital Humanities (5 credits) DH6007 Models, Simulations and Games (5 credits) DH6008 Databases for Digital Humanities (5 credits) DH6009 Introduction to Quantitative Methods for Digital Humanities (5 credits) DH6012 Editing Skills for Research Postgraduates in the Humanities and Social Sciences (5 credits) DH6013 Getting Started with Graduate Research and Generic Skills (5 credits) DH6014 Digital Skills for Research Postgraduates in the Humanities and Social Science (5 credits) In lieu of some elective modules, students may take up to 20 credits of existing discipline specific 6000 level modules, subject to the approval of the relevant Discipline/School and of the Board of Studies of the MA, to make up the 45 credits required for taught part of an MA. Part II DH6002 Digital Arts and Humanities MA Dissertation (45 credits) - A dissertation of a maximum of 20,000 words must be submitted by a specified date in September. Summary of Teaching and Assessment The MA Digital Arts and Humanities is a one-year full-time MA. Face-to-face teaching is delivered by discussion-based seminar. The course also features elements of blended learning using online forums and social networking tools. Some modules will be offered wholly or partly as workshops. Modules in the course require students take a 'hands on' approach, using the current generation of ICT tools. They also include assessments, testing one s knowledge of both theory and practice of inquiry in the digital age. It is expected that students will create a digital research project in the course of their research. Assessment also includes individual and group work using a range of presentation styles including: oral, online, shared, text, video and audio. Program Outcomes On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to: Demonstrate an awareness of the development and the major issues and debates in Digital Arts and Humanities; Outline some of the major positions, issues and problems in the study of the Digital Arts and Humanities; Demonstrate ability to use digital tools commonly in use in the Digital Arts and Humanities to capture and analyse source materials;
3 Evaluate a broad range of primary and secondary sources related to contemporary DAH practice in the widest context; Participate in collaborative scholarly communities using digital tools; Devise research questions which apply digital tools to arts and humanities issues; Plan and conduct research at the appropriate level for a masters qualification; Present their research in a thesis supported by relevant digital artefacts. Course Descriptions Applicants should note that optional modules are arranged on an annual basis. It is possible that a module may be modified in its content, suspended for a session, or discontinued. New modules may become available in any given year. The final decision on which module options a successful candidate will follow will be made by the Institute in consultation with the candidate before the start of the session. Below is a brief introduction to a selection of each module: Communities of Practice in Digital Scholarship In this module, students will be introduced to the range of tools and practices which support current collaborative scholarly work in the Digital Humanities. Students will explore and evaluate the emerging digital communities and collaborations among scholars, review the literature and debates on the changing nature of scholarship, on communities of practice, peer review, collaboration and "critical friends". The changing nature of academic debate and the impact of digital tools in research and on the production of academic work and topics such as digital rights management, licensing and copyright will be studied. Students will engage with local, national and international networks, and begin to develop a professional digital "presence". Digital Humanities Institute To enhance research postgraduate education through an intensive week-long course, based on a special research topic and aimed at doctoral students in the Digital Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. The module will provide an opportunity for intensive investigation on special topics in Digital Humanities. The content will vary depending on the topic/school offered in any given year. Conceptual Introduction to Digital Arts and Humanities To understand the conceptual bases of digital research in the Arts and Humanities, including emerging new fields and the positioning of digital culture in current discourse. This module will introduce students to the fundamentals of digital arts and humanities history, theory, and methodologies. It will lay the foundations for subsequent modules by introducing students to a wide variety of issues of concern in contemporary digital arts and humanities practice. The trajectory of the course will move from historical and cultural concerns to present-day practice to cutting-edge research questions. History and Theory of Digital Arts Discussion and analysis of problems in the history and theory of digital art. Humanities and New Technologies: Tools and Methodologies Study of selected topics in Communication and collaboration, Data Capture, Data Structuring and Enhancement, Data Analysis, Data Publishing and Dissemination, Strategy and Project Management. Graphics and Graphic Design The principles, practices, technologies and critical frameworks associated with the practice of graphic design for digital media. Develop understanding of the creative and technical aspects of image capture, editing and manipulation. Production of graphics for digital media using industry-standard tools. Audio and Sound Engineering
4 Introduction to the technologies and techniques used in digital audio. Physics of sound and the psychophysiological basis of hearing. Sound engineering, production and post-production. Digital Video Capture and Packaging Develop understanding of the planning, production and post-production of digital video. Application and evaluation of industry-standard tools in capturing, processing and packaging digital video. Audio Processing Develop understanding of the principles underlying the compression of audio. Evaluation of state-of-the-art coding techniques, including compression algorithms, error resilience, sound synthesis and music synthesis. Enhancement of the performance of existing systems for compression and delivery. Design of novel techniques and tools for compression and delivery. Teaching and Learning in Digital Humanities This module will look at the main developments and debates in teaching and learning in higher education, and look at how digital tools affect, modify and develop those debates; and at pedagogical uses of digital tools. Models, Simulations and Games Since the adoption of Von Reisswitz' Kreigspeil by the Prussian army, the use of models, simulations and games for education, training and planning in war and peace has expanded, and this has accelerated in developments in digital gaming and simulations. This module surveys the history of these developments, and looks at the theoretical debates about the use and abuse of these tools. Students will study and design simulations. Databases for Digital Humanities Module will cover the history of large database projects in Digital Humanities, looking at the practical evolution of, and lessons learned from database projects in Digital Humanities database projects, and at how mainstream database standards and theories relate to DH projects. Students will be expected to design and create databases for capturing humanities data in digital form. Introduction to Quantitative Methods for Digital Humanities This module will survey the development of quantitative research techniques in the humanities in various fields (cliometrics, demographic history, computational linguistics); review the current state of the art and introduce students to basic techniques which the humanities scholar can use for research. Editing Skills for Research Postgraduates in the Humanities and Social Sciences Using literature as a basis and reference, students will be trained in both conventional and new theories of textual editing as well as theorising copyright issues: the role of the editor; the importance of interface; issues of copyright and fair dealing; the nature of information and divisions of knowledge; the importance of visuals, and of different media and online spaces; as well as in the technical skills (XML/ TEI) required to publish online. Getting Started with Graduate Research and Generic Skills The module will guide students through a variety of management and organizational techniques including the introduction of Training Needs Analysis and Professional Development Planning. In addition it will provide sessions on the literature review, managing the supervision process, writing, information literacy, web based research, referencing tools and software and effective time management. It will provide an introduction to
5 presentation skills for conference papers. The module will introduce students to research ethics and the philosophy of research and research funding techniques. Digital Skills for Research Postgraduates in the Humanities and Social Science It will introduce students to a range of digital skills and key concepts for online publication of a range of texts / contexts / materials within the humanities. Skills include: Defining content Managing content HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language XML - Extensible Markup Language TEI - Text Encoding Initiative - the international standard for markup in the humanities Open source softwares for graphic / image manipulation and design Understanding IP and copyright issues FTP - File transfer protocol for transfer of files
