I wish I could have stayed longer! FUBiS 2004 Alumni Berlin European Metropolis Studying in Berlin means studying in a true European metropolis. With no doubt, Germany s capital is one of Europe s most vibrant cities, deriving its fascinating diversity from the unique geographical and cultural position between the former Eastern and Western Europe. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and Germany s reunification a year later, Berlin was appointed capital again in Living up to its reputation as a cultural city and focal point of European affairs once again, Berlin is the perfect setting for both, a memorable academic experience and a time of unsurpassed personal growth. Whether you are interested in politics or history, literature or philosophy, art or music, Berlin provides a platform to experience at close hand a fascinating variety of cultures and the momentous changes taking place in Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world. Freie Universität Berlin Since the founding in 1948, the Freie Universität Berlin, now home to approximately 45,000 students, has become one of Germany s most progressive and international universities, offering an unparallel number of subjects while continuously trying to deepen and intensify its international relations. Today, the FU maintains more than 95 partnerships with renowned universities on all continents, promoting the worldwide exchange of students and scholars. As a result of these efforts, more than visiting students and over guest professors and scholars study, teach, and do research at the FU every year. In the tradition of its international openness and as a symbol of its progressiveness, the International Summer University (FUBiS) has been part of the FU s regular program since Studying Abroad at FUBiS The Freie Universität Berlin International Summer University (FUBiS) is an intensive summer program that brings students together from all over the world to promote international education and cross-cultural understanding. Now in its 8 th year, FUBiS will, once again, offer over twenty-five different courses taught in English to enable students to participate in this unique opportunity of studying abroad in Berlin, regardless of their knowledge of the German language. At the same time, FUBiS also understands itself as a meeting point for students particularly interested in German culture, history, language and art, and has complemented its curriculum with German language courses on at least five levels of proficiency. The language courses can be combined with a content course (taught in English) but also with a growing number of courses on literature and culture (taught in German). The interdisciplinary approach that unites all FUBiS courses and the implementation of the course material, class

2 discussions, and various excursions certainly enrich the academic curriculum of each course. It also contributes to a life time experience of a foreign culture and country, while students are able to earn credits that will transfer to their home university. Admission requirements Students must be at least 18 years of age and should have completed at least one year of higher education (college or university) at the beginning of the FUBiS program. Applicants do not have to be enrolled in any other program in order to apply to FUBiS. Students interested in taking a German language instruction course are requested to complete a language placement test when registering and again, on the day before classes start to assure placement in a course that corresponds to their level of proficiency. German language proficiency on an advanced Intermediate level (Mittelstufe II or higher) is the pre-requisite for students interested in a course taught exclusively in German, such as Business German or the courses taught on German literature. Proof of proficiency in English is not formally requested at any point, however, students are asked to critically evaluate their English language skills prior to the registration to a course taught in English. Faculty The International Summer University faculty consists of fully qualified and distinguished professors and assistant professors who will teach courses focusing on important topics in their respective areas of research. Most of the FUBiS faculty members have also taught as full-time professors and/or guest lecturers at universities outside of Germany. If you wish to obtain more detailed information on the academic career or recent publications of individual faculty members, please visit our homepage at: Freie Universität Berlin campus The Freie Universität Berlin is located in the southwest of Berlin in the beautiful residential area of Dahlem with parks, the Grunewald forest and many lakes in its immediate vicinity. In contrast to many other universities, the departments of the FU Berlin are not concentrated in a few large buildings but housed in expansive modern complexes as well as many smaller villas. FUBiS courses will meet in one of the main buildings on the Campus of the FU, which is named "Silberlaube" because of its striking silver exterior. The "Silberlaube" accommodates the Arts and Humanities departments and their libraries: German Studies, Modern Languages, Education, Psychology and Sport Studies. The language laboratories, the media library, the main dining hall (Mensa), a cafeteria, and the FUBiS computer labs are also located in the vicinity of the FUBiS classrooms. Although the university itself is not located in Berlin's downtown area, the city centre is easily accessible by subway and bus. Credits The Academic Board of FUBiS defines the number of credits awarded for successful completion of a course based on the number of contact hours and the course workload. Most colleges and universities accept FUBiS credits for their degree requirements. However, since each institution has its own policies regarding credit transfer, we strongly recommend that students consult their academic advisor to receive credit transfer approval prior to enrolling in the FUBiS program. A late registration fee applies after the designated deadlines.
