1 BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Before and After School Child Care Program at JFK and Pumpkin Delight Elementary schools offers a convenient, safe and affordable solution to school age child care for families at these schools. This is a self-funded program that relies on the program fees collected from participants in order to operate. The Before and After School Program follows the district school calendar. Our program starts immediately after school and on scheduled early dismissal days for teacher conferences, etc. Parents may choose to enroll their child/children in only the Before School program, in only the After Care Program, or in both the Before AND After School Program. STAFF Patti Sabin is the Program Director of our Before and After School Child Care Programs, at John F. Kennedy and Pumpkin Delight Elementary schools and is responsible for the overall management of the program. Our program also employs a Site Leader at each school for day to day management of each shift. Our child care staff members include parents, former teachers, para-educators, and high school students. ENROLLMENT Parents/guardians must complete and return the program registration forms. You are also required to update this information if it changes during the school year. Children will NOT be admitted to the Before or After School Program until this information has been submitted with your application fee and deposit of one week which will be applied to the last week of care. This information must be turned in at least 72 hours before your child attends the program to allow staff to verify information and prepare for caring for your child and accommodate their specific needs, if applicable. A child is presumed to be in the custody of both parents unless you supply a current court order that states otherwise. Please note: you are responsible for tuition payments regardless of your child s absence from the program. BEFORE SCHOOL DAILY PROGRAM Program doors open at 7:15 a.m. (On days with delayed openings the program will open 90 minutes later than the normal scheduled start time.) Parents and their children must enter through the assigned Program Door (not necessarily through the school front door). Parents - or assigned drop off person MUST sign their child/children in each day and present a valid photo ID to staff at that time. Children will remain in the All Purpose room for the morning session. Breakfast will not be provided by the program. Children are welcome to bring a breakfast to school where staff will assist children with breakfast. Morning activities will include free play: games, toys, art and/or writing. AFTER SCHOOL DAILY PROGRAM At the end of the school day, students will proceed to the program area where attendance will be taken. Students will be offered a snack at the start of the program. Students will then focus on homework, utilize the age appropriate, approved computer programs or other activities. Children have the option of engaging in supervised outdoor activities, weather and temperatures permitting. 1
2 Parents should enter through the assigned Program Door, (not necessarily the school front door). Parents - or assigned pick up person MUST sign their child/children out each day and present a valid photo ID to staff at that time. o If someone other than the parent/guardian is to pick up the child, we must be notified in writing prior to the time of pick-up and/or designated on the initial Registration Form. The program closes promptly at 6:00 p.m. (unless weather related early closing).* o Please call to advise that you are running late so that staff is aware and they can advise your child/children of the unexpected late pick up. o Late fees may be charged (see separate Misc. Fees) Children will not be released to anyone who appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. An announcement from the Milford Public Schools will alert parents when an early dismissal has been called for.* ILLNESS If your child is not well in the morning, please do not bring him/her to the program. We ask you to call us to let us know your child will not be coming to the program that day, due to illness (or for any other reason). If your child is sent home ill during school - or is sent home for any other reason, they may not come back to attend the after school care program that day. If your child becomes ill after school, (while at the After School Care Program) we will call you to come and pick up your child. Please make every effort to arrive as soon as possible but no later than one hour after call. MEDICATION Our program does not allow us to administer medication to your child. If your child requires medication, it can only be administered during regular school operating hours, per the Board of Education and Milford Health Department policies. Please refer to the Parent-Student Handbook published through the Milford Public Schools for additional guidance and details regarding medication. INJURY The staff will inform the parent/family if a child is injured at the program. The parent is responsible for picking up the injured child and determining whether further medical attention is necessary. In the event of an accident NOT requiring emergency attention, the staff will 1- Administer appropriate first aid 2- Notify the parent 3- Observe and monitor the child s activity until the parent arrives. In the event of an accident requiring IMMEDIATE medical attention, the staff will 1- Call for an ambulance 2- Make the child comfortable and administer appropriate first aid 3- Notify the parent 4- Accompany the child to hospital if emergency contact has not yet arrived. BEHAVIORAL ISSUES & DISCIPLINE Appropriate behavior and consequences for inappropriate behavior help to teach self-control and responsibility. Through a combination of support, encouragement and limitation, staff members attempt to teach children these invaluable life skills. Refer to Milford Public Schools Parent-Student Handbook Conduct Policies and Procedures. A signed code of conduct form must be returned before your child may attend the program. 2
3 FORMS OF PAYMENT Personal checks or money orders are accepted for payment of all childcare fees. Cash is not accepted. Please note your child s/children s first and last name(s) on the memo line so we can apply your payment properly. Checks should be made payable to MBOE Before & After Care. They may be dropped off during drop-off /pick-up or mailed directly to the business office. (See separate Contact and Payment Information.) WHEN IS PAYMENT DUE? Tuition is due on Friday morning of each week for the upcoming week. Pre- payments are accepted on a bi-weekly, monthly or quarterly basis. If an account falls more than 2 weeks behind without special payment arrangements being made, the child(ren) may not attend subsequent week(s) until the account is current. CARE 4 KIDS PROGRAM ACCEPTED If you are eligible for Care 4 Kids, please inform the Program Director. Remember: YOU are responsible for completing all Care 4 Kids applications and requests for extra time for vacation weeks, if applicable. You are responsible for payment to our program until your Care 4 Kids application has been approved. You are also responsible for all balances remaining after the Care 4 Kids payments have been applied. A minimum of 10 business days must be given to the Program Director to allow for completion of necessary Care 4 Kids paperwork. The completed forms will be returned to you to give to your assigned Care 4 Kids counselor. HOLIDAY CLOSINGS The Before and After School Child Care program follows all scheduled school holiday closings. The school calendar for the current school year is found on our website. SCHOOL CLOSINGS* The program will NOT be open when school is closed due to inclement weather. On days with delayed openings the program will open at 90 minutes later than the normal scheduled start time. Please check the Milford Public Schools Website: and/or listen to the following stations beginning at 6:15 a.m. for school cancellations or delays. If there is an early dismissal due to inclement weather, families must pick up their child/children as soon as possible. An announcement from the Milford Public Schools will alert parents when an early dismissal has been called for. SCHOOL VACATION WEEKS Our program MAY offer child care during the school vacation weeks or the summer, for an additional charge. Operation of our program during these weeks is dependent on the number of families that indicate interest. Sign-up sheets to determine interest and registration forms for the school vacation weeks will be available as we get closer to those weeks. 3
