1 !"" #$%!& '()!)((*(+, SUSPENSION Suzuki Front Suspension Swift MacPherson strut independent front suspension is used. Strut and strut support are isolated by rubber mounts. Lower end of strut is connected to steering knuckle. Lower end of steering knuckle is attached by ball joint to lower control arm. See Fig. 1. Steering wheel movement is transmitted to tie rod end and steering knuckle, causing wheel to turn. With steering knuckle movement, strut also rotates by means of top strut bearing and lower ball joint pivot. Hold tire at top and bottom. Move top of tire in and out. Horizontal or vertical movement should not exist at ball joint. Disconnect ball joint from steering knuckle. If looseness exists in joint or ball stud can be turned by hand, replace ball joint../00"70132 Wheel bearings are not adjustable. To check wheel bearing(s) for excessive wear, raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove hub center cap and mount a dial indicator to rotor and to center hub shaft. Grasp rotor and apply pull/push force in and out. Note indicator reading. Replace bearing if movement exceeds.016" (.41 mm).

2 #6#107": WARNING: Use care when working with strut coil springs. Springs are under extreme tension when compressed. Removal & Disassembly 1) Raise and support vehicle on safety stands. Allow front suspension to hang free. Remove front wheels. Remove brake hose "E" clip and brake hose from bracket. Remove strut-to-steering knuckle bolts and nuts. While holding strut by hand, remove strut upper mounting nuts. Remove strut. 2) Using a spring compressor, compress strut spring until strut rod nut extends about.5" (13 mm) above stopper. NEVER bottom out spring. Remove strut rod nut. Disassemble strut assembly, noting position of assembled parts for reassembly. See Fig. 2. Fig. 2: Exploded View Of Strut Assembly Inspection Check for deterioration and damage. Check for even resistance as strut is moved through full travel. Replace as necessary. Reassembly & Ensure spring seats and spring are properly positioned. Ensure arrow on upper spring seat points OUTWARD when strut is installed in vehicle. To complete reassembly and installation, reverse disassembly and removal procedure. "4.043#4"1571""843# Removal!"

3 Raise and support vehicle, allowing suspension to hang free. Remove ball joint pinch bolt. Separate ball joint from steering knuckle. Remove suspension arm bracket bolts. See Fig. 3. Remove lower control arm assembly. Fig. 3: Exploded View Of Lower Control Arm Assembly NOTE: If ball joint is worn or damaged, replace lower control arm and ball joint as an assembly. Inspection Check parts for deterioration, cracks, or damage. Check ball joint for smoothness of rotation. Replace worn or damaged bushings. Bushing Replacement Cut flange from front bushing. Press front bushing out of control arm. Coat NEW bushing with soapy water and press into control arm. Remove rear bushing from lower control arm stud. When pressing new rear bushing onto stud, ensure bushing is positioned correctly. See Fig. 4. Fig. 4: Installing Lower Control Arm Rear Bushing 1) Install suspension arm on body and finger tighten nuts and bolts. Install ball joint into steering knuckle clamp. Install ball joint pinch bolt so bolt head is toward front of vehicle. #"

4 2) Tighten ball joint and both control arm bushings to specification. Refer to the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Install wheels and lower vehicle. Check wheel alignment. Refer to the appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT../00"/675&71904#4 Removal (Except GT) 1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Unstake drive shaft nut. Using service brake to lock wheel, remove drive shaft nut. 2) Remove caliper carrier bolts. Remove caliper with carrier and wire aside. Remove brake disc screws. Using two 8 mm bolts, pull brake disc from hub. See Fig. 5. Fig. 5: Removing Brake Disc 3) Remove wheel hub using hammer puller and adapter. See Fig. 6. Using Puller ( ) and Adapter ( or for GT), remove wheel bearing inner race. See Fig. 7. Fig. 6: Removing Wheel Hub Fig. 7: Removing Wheel Bearing Inner Race 1) Using Bearing Race Installer ( or

5 for GT), install outside inner race. See Fig. 8. Fig. 8: Installing Outside Inner Race 2) Apply grease to outside bearing, outside inner race and oil seal lip. See Fig. 9. Install axle shaft washer and NEW lock nut. Fig. 9: Applying Grease To Hub 3) Finish hub installation into knuckle assembly by tightening lock nut (DO NOT tap wheel hub with hammer or mallet). Install brake disc. Install brake caliper/caliper carrier. Tighten carrier bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Depress brake pedal and tighten NEW axle shaft lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Stake axle shaft lock nut. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. # "0 Removal 1) Raise and support vehicle, allowing suspension to hang free. Remove wheel. Remove wheel hub and disc brake rotor. Refer to WHEEL HUB & DISC BRAKE ROTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

6 2) Remove tie rod end cotter pin and castle nut. Using Tie Rod Remover ( ), separate tie rod end from steering knuckle. Remove strut-to-knuckle assembly bolts and nuts. Remove ball joint pinch bolt and nut. Remove steering knuckle from ball joint. 1) Install steering knuckle clamp onto ball joint. Install ball joint pinch bolt so bolt head is toward front of vehicle. Install strut to knuckle assembly. Install tie rod to steering knuckle. 2) Tighten all fasteners to specification. Refer to the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Install wheel hub and disc rotor. Install wheels and lower vehicle. Check wheel alignment. Refer to the appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT../00"70132 Removal (Except GT) Remove steering knuckle. See STEERING KNUCKLE. Remove outer seal, snap ring, inner seal and inner bearing. Using press and Bearing Remover/Installer ( ) or a brass drift and hammer, remove inner and outer wheel bearing races from steering knuckle bore. 1) Apply special grease to bearings and races. Using Bearing Remover/Installer ( ), press inner bearing into knuckle bore. Using Bearing Installer Support ( ), Bearing Installer ( ), and Bearing Installer Handle ( ), press outer bearing into knuckle bore. 2) Install inner seal flush with knuckle surface. See Fig. 10. Install outer snap ring. Using Bearing Installer ( ), install outer seal to knuckle bore and bottom it against snap ring. To complete installation, reverse steering knuckle removal procedure. Remove outer seal, snap ring and inner seal. See Fig. 11. Using press, Bearing Remover/Installer ( ) and Attachment ( ), remove bearing assembly. Press bearing outward from inner seal side. NOTE: On GT, always replace inner and outer wheel bearings as an assembly. 1) Apply special grease to bearings and races. Using Bearing & Seal Remover/Installer ( ), Bearing Installer Handle ( ) and Bearing Installer Support ( ), press bearing assembly into knuckle bore from outer side.

Using Bearing Installer Support ( ), press inner seal into knuckle until seal is flush with knuckle surface. To complete installation, reverse steering knuckle removal procedure.
