1 Marriott s Endorsement of World Travel & Tourism Council s Action Agenda For a more information regarding Marriott s sustainability and climate principles, practices and results, please refer to Marriott s 2009 Sustainability Report, 2010 Sustainability Update and/or Marriott.com/environment. Marriott supports and endorses the World Travel & Tourism Council s (WTTC) Action Agenda (below), comprised of ten action items which will advance efforts to address climate change. In the Report Leading the Challenge on Climate Change, WTTC and participating members outlined climate change policies and commitments around five themes; accountability and responsibility; local community sustainable growth and capacity building; educating customers and stakeholders; greening supply chains; and innovations, capital investment and infrastructure. The full working group of members and other stakeholders from the tourism industry, public sector and academia encourage governments to implement supportive and progressive policies, as well as to offer incentives and develop initiatives to facilitate our industry effort. WTTC WTTC Marriott Principle Marriott Action 1 Aspire to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2035 (with an interim target of CO2 emission reduction of 30% by 2020 if there is an international agreement on global emissions reduction or 25% by 2020 in the absence of such agreement). 2 Align efforts to produce an internationally agreed framework of standards to measure progress against GHG emission targets. Further reduce energy and water consumption by 25 percent per available room by 2017 (10-year goal, baseline 2007). Actively engage and advocate for collaboration on energy, sustainability and climate change standards through industry and crosssector organizations and working groups. Marriott s 2010 results showed a cumulative reduction of 20% energy, 29% water and 10% GHG emissions to its 2007 baseline. We are on track to achieve our 25 percent reduction by 2017 goal. As noted in Marriott s Sustainability Report, we engage with a broad number of stakeholders to address climate change and public policy, and will continue to do so on policies that are consistent with the company s goals and sustainability strategy. Some of our most recent stakeholders include, but are not limited to: Government United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Copenhagen and Cancun, U.S. EPA, U.S. General Services Administration, and members of US Congress NGOs Audubon International, Amazonas Sustainable Foundation, Avoided Deforestation Partners, Tropical Forest & Climate Coalition, Conservation International, Global Reporting Initiative, UK Carbon Trust, US Green Building Council, World Environment Center

2 WTTC Marriott Principle Marriott Action 3 Identify climate change hotspots where we operate, develop practical strategies and set an example of low carbon business, helping local communities access information on new technologies to reduce their own emissions. 4 Support efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation together with partners, including the Prince of Wales Rainforest Project. Costa Rica Small-and medium-sized local suppliers of Marriott s hotels in Costa Rica are trained by the World Environment Center to reduce energy and water consumption, minimize waste and raw material usage, and lower operating costs through the U.S. State Department s Cleaner Production Private Sector Partnerships. Amazon Rainforest, Brazil Marriott has partnered with the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) to promote environmental sustainability for the global community by protecting the lungs of the planet, the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil, through forest conservation and an improved quality of life for the indigenous community. Marriott committed $2 million over four years to help FAS protect The Juma Sustainable Development Reserve, which encompasses 1.4 million acres of pristine rainforest. To promote this investment strategy, Marriott supported the Prince of Wales Rainforest Project, and Chairman and CEO J.W. Marriott, Jr. participated in a video advocating support with other global business and government leaders.

This makes our business more sustainable, while offering our guests and associates opportunities for more eco-sensitive experiences, including through green meetings & events. FutureFish Sustainable Seafood Seafood is a popular choice for Marriott s guests served in restaurants and at catered events, accounting for 40 percent of our menu items globally. The demand for seafood, a major source of protein, is rising globally, which is quickly depleting the fish in our oceans and fresh waters around the world. To help address this, Marriott s culinary team developed a global sustainable seafood program branded FutureFish to source and serve sustainable seafood. Working with vendors and global/local fisheries, our chefs are sourcing an increasing amount of seafood that is caught in a sustainable manner, including from very small fishing communities. The company draws upon the expertise of many organizations and has collaborated with Cleanfish, Monterey Bay Aquarium, FishWatch and others to assist in this effort. In less than one year, we increased the amount of sustainable seafood sourced by 15 percent. Marriott was selected to participate in a Capitol Hill briefing on the Economic Value of the Oceans. Marriott conveyed the goals of its FutureFish global sustainable seafood program and called for a broader effort to address this critical issue in the US and around the world. Furniture, fixtures & equipment Marriott will participate in a new consortium working to develop the Hospitality Sustainable Purchasing Index, (HSPI) established in May Facilitated by MindClick, the consortium of hospitality management companies, hotel suppliers, architecture firms, sustainability experts and the U.S. Green Building Council will work collaboratively to provide our industry with a unified approach and metrics for greening our global furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) supply chain.

4 WTTC Marriott Principle Marriott Action 6 Devote resources to explaining our climate change strategies and share our experience of exploring new low carbon technologies and sustainable approaches that mitigate GHG emissions. Create green construction standards for hotel developers. In collaboration with the US Green Building Council, Marriott will offer a pre-certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) prototype for five brands by the end of The brands include Courtyard, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites. The Courtyard prototype, for example, saves Marriott s hotel owners an average of $100,000 in development costs, six months in design time, and up to 25 percent energy and water savings. Marriott, along with others in the hospitality industry, collaborated with the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) on a groundbreaking initiative to calculate and communicate each company s carbon impact by agreeing on a standardized methodology and metrics. The Phase One methodology has had input from Greenview Consulting and has been reviewed by the World Resources Institute. Standards should be in place for the 2012 RFP (request for proposal) season for the hospitality industry s corporate customers. This collaboration will benefit those in the hospitality industry and the customers and businesses they serve. Marriott is a member of the World Economic Forum s Aviation Travel and Tourism Council, which is addressing strategies for CO2 emissions commitments by the aviation sector.

5 WTTC Marriott Principle Marriott Action 9 Adopt environmental management systems to continually measure our energy use and GHG emissions, design an e- platform of best sustainability practices per segment (eg energy, water, solar, waste, etc) that engage with our staff and customers, and share our progress towards meeting annual energy and emission reduction targets with all stakeholders. 10 Target the investment community and encourage the creation of financial instruments closely linked to sustainable projects in the Travel & Tourism industry. Marriott founder J. Willard Marriott, Sr. stated that success is never final so we continually improve and seek greater operational efficiencies and systems to measure performance. Marriott s portfolio of environmental investments include REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation & Degradation) and PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services) projects as climate mitigation/adaptation models that can be replicated and scaled. Marriott reports its sustainability goals, initiatives and results to our stakeholders through our Sustainability Report based on Global Reporting Initiative guidelines, our recently released 2010 Update, and annual submissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project. A regular reporting process aids the continual growth and evolution of our sustainability progress. We communicate key sustainability initiatives throughout the year in a variety of internal and external news channels, including social media. In November, Marriott announced a preferred partnership with PDG Realty for the development of 50 Fairfield by Marriott hotels throughout Brazil. The hotels in this partnership will be constructed with environmental design standards and, upon opening, will contribute to the endowment of the Juma Reserve in the Amazon Rainforest.
